Locomotor activity rhythm was examined at various temperatures under a 16 h light : 8 h dark photoperiod (LD 16:8) or LD 12:12 using adults of the burying beetle Nicrophorus quadripunctatus. At 20°C, the locomotor activity of the beetles showed a bimodal daily pattern with two peaks around lights on and lights off under both photoperiods. This bimodal activity rhythm persisted under constant darkness; therefore, the activity of adult N. quadripunctatus is controlled by a circadian clock. Adults showed a bimodal activity pattern for temperatures ranging from 15 to 25°C. The evening peak of the daily activity was earlier at lower temperatures. These findings suggest that in the field, N. quadripunctatus shows crepuscular activity, and is active earlier in the afternoon in cooler seasons. In this species, therefore, temperature appears to play an important role in the determination of daily activity patterns. 相似文献

The habitat and movements of a Pacific bluefin tuna were investigated by reanalyzing archival tag data with sea surface temperature
data. During its trans-Pacific migration to the eastern Pacific, the fish took a direct path and primarily utilized waters,
in the Subarctic Frontal Zone (SFZ). Mean ambient temperature during the trans-Pacific migration was 14.5 ± 2.9 (°C ± SD),
which is significantly colder than the waters typically inhabited by bluefin tuna in their primary feeding grounds in the
western and eastern Pacific (17.6 ± 2.1). The fish moved rapidly through the colder water, and the heat produced during swimming

The band-legged ground cricket Dianemobius nigrofasciatus enters diapause at an early embryonic stage when adults are reared under short-day conditions or the eggs are exposed to a low temperature. We examined the morphological features of the embryo during early development and determined the exact stage of entry into diapause. In non-diapause eggs, no periplasmic space was observed in the surface region and a small number of nuclei surrounded by cytoplasm (energids) were found among the yolk granules and lipid droplets 12 h after egg laying (AEL) at 25°C. The energids sparsely but evenly populated the surface region at 40 h AEL, but there were some gaps between these energids. A continuous thin layer of nuclei with cytoplasm had completely covered the egg surface at 56 h AEL, suggesting that the blastoderm is formed between 40 and 56 h AEL. At 72 h AEL, we found a germ band at the posterior pole. Electron microscopy revealed clear cell membranes at 40 h AEL. Staining with rhodamine-dextran dye demonstrated that the cell membrane is formed when the nuclei appear on the egg surface at 12–24 h AEL. These results indicate that cellularization occurs before blastoderm formation. In diapause eggs, neither the embryonic rudiment nor germ band was formed, but a continuous layer of cells covered the egg surface. The population of the cicada Cryptotympana facialis began to increase in Osaka, Japan, during the late 20th century. Climate warming is considered a major cause, although the relationship between temperature and the cicada population increase remains unclear. By examining cold tolerance in overwintering eggs of C. facialis in relation to another cicada, Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata , whose population has recently decreased in Osaka, we tested the hypothesis that warming has caused the population increase of C. facialis by decreasing egg mortality due to winter temperatures. A short-term (24 h) cold exposure experiment demonstrated that the half-lethal temperatures (LT50) of C. facialis and G. nigrofuscata were −23.3°C and −28.9°C, respectively, although these extreme low temperatures never occurred in Osaka during the 20th century. Prolonged exposure to −5°C for up to 30 days had no harmful effects on the hatching rate in either species. Overwintering mortality was also assessed under naturally fluctuating conditions by transferring eggs to cooler elevated sites that mimicked the environment prior to the current warming. Eggs of C. facialis that overwintered at the cooler site exhibited similar hatching rates to those maintained at the original site. The results of these experiments consistently indicated that overwintering eggs of C. facialis possess adequate tolerance to the low temperatures of the 20th century. Therefore, we rejected our initial hypothesis that recent increases in the C. facialis population have been caused by warming-related reductions in overwintering egg mortality. 相似文献

AimsAsymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, has been reported to be a novel marker for the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We have recently found that accumulation of ADMA could trigger peritubular capillary loss, thus contributing to tubulointerstitial ischemia and fibrosis in a rat model of CKD. However, effects of ADMA on glomerular capillary loss and sclerosis remain to be elucidated.Main methodsIn this study, we investigated whether lowering of ADMA by overexpression of dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH), a main enzyme that degrades ADMA, could ameliorate glomerular capillary loss and sclerosis in a rat model of CKD. Four weeks after 5/6 subtotal nephrectomy (Nx), animals were given tail vein injections with recombinant adenovirus vector encoding DDAH-I (Adv-DDAH) or control vector expressing bacterial β-galactosidase (Adv-LZ), or orally administered with 20 mg/kg/day of hydralazine (Hyz) which served as a blood pressure control model.Key findingsPlasma levels of ADMA were associated with decreased number of glomerular capillaries as well as severity of glomerular sclerosis in Nx-rats. These glomerular changes progressed in Adv-LZ- or Hyz-treated Nx-rats, while they were ameliorated by the treatment with DDAH overexpression.SignificanceOur present data suggest that ADMA may be involved in glomerular capillary loss and sclerosis, thus contributing to the progression of CKD. Dysiherbaine (DH) and neodysiherbaine A (NDH) selectively bind and activate two kainate-type ionotropic glutamate receptors, GluK1 and GluK2. The ligand-binding domains of human GluK1 and GluK2 were crystallized as bound forms with a series of DH analogues including DH, NDH, 8-deoxy-NDH, 9-deoxy-NDH and 8,9-dideoxy-NDH (MSVIII-19), isolated from natural sources or prepared by total synthesis. Since the DH analogues exhibit a wide range of binding affinities and agonist efficacies, it follows that the detailed analysis of crystal structure would provide us with a significant opportunity to elucidate structural factors responsible for selective binding and some aspects of gating efficacy. We found that differences in three amino acids (Thr503, Ser706 and Ser726 in GluK1 and Ala487, Asn690 and Thr710 in GluK2) in the ligand-binding pocket generate differences in the binding modes of NDH to GluK1 and GluK2. Furthermore, deletion of the C9 hydroxy group in NDH alters the ligand conformation such that it is no longer suited for binding to the GluK1 ligand-binding pocket. In GluK2, NDH pushes and rotates the side chain of Asn690 (substituted for Ser706 in GluK1) and disrupts an interdomain hydrogen bond with Glu409. The present data support the idea that receptor selectivities of DH analogues resulted from the differences in the binding modes of the ligands in GluK1/GluK2 and the steric repulsion of Asn690 in GluK2. All ligands, regardless of agonist efficacy, induced full domain closure. Consequently, ligand efficacy and domain closure did not directly coincide with DH analogues and the kainate receptors. 相似文献

Photoreceptors involved in photoperiodism in insects and mites can be either the retinal photoreceptors in the visual system or nonvisual extraretinal photoreceptors. Mites with no eyes have a clear photoperiodic response, suggesting the involvement of extraretinal photoreceptors in mite photoperiodism. In mites equipped with eyes, however, it is not known whether the retinal or extraretinal photoreceptors are involved in photoperiodism. The two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae possesses two pairs of eyes. Adult females of this species terminate diapause in response to long days. To investigate whether the eyes function as photoperiodic photoreceptors in T. urticae, their eyes were ablated using a laser ablation system. Mites with their eyes intact terminated diapause under long days after low temperature exposure, whereas they remained in diapause under short days. Under constant darkness, they did not terminate diapause. When all eyes were removed, the mites remained in diapause even when they were maintained under long days. In contrast, the mites showed clear photoperiodic response when only the anterior or posterior eyes were removed. These results indicate that both the anterior and posterior eyes function as photoreceptors in photoperiodic termination of diapause in T. urticae. 相似文献
