Mimosa pigra L. is a serious weed of wetlands of Australia, Asia and Africa. A suite of established biocontrol agents have been introduced in Australia and some Asian countries, but better control is needed. Nesaecrepida infuscata (Schaeffer) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a common insect on M. pigra in tropical America. The larvae develop on the roots while the adults feed on the leaves. As both roots and leaves of M. pigra are relatively undamaged in the introduced range, this species has potential to limit the growth, survival and seed production. Furthermore, it is abundant in the dry season and so inflicts damage when most other agents are not active. In host specificity tests, larvae did not develop on any of the 65 test plant species other than M. pigra. Adult feeding on test plant species other than M. pigra was minimal. Based on these results, this insect has been released in Australia.  相似文献

The Perdido Key beach mouse (Peromyscus poliontus trissyllepsis) is an endangered mammal indigenous to the panhandle beaches of Northwest Florida. A captive 3.5-y-old female mouse was evaluated because of severe pruritus, diffuse alopecia, skin reddening, and ulcerations over the dorsum of her body. Initial skin biopsy of the affected area suggested bacterial dermatitis but was inconclusive. Despite empiric antibiotic, anthelmintic, and antihistamine treatments, she continued to decline and developed severe ulcerations over the majority of her body. Postmortem histopathologic evaluation led to a tentative diagnosis of epitheliotropic lymphoma, suggestive of a mycosis fungoides T-cell-type cutaneous lymphoma. However, immunohistochemistry results challenged this diagnosis, indicating that the lesion was actually an epidermotropic B-cell lymphoma. Spontaneous cutaneous B-cell lymphomas are rare in rodents and had not previously been reported to occur in Perdido Key beach mice. This case report provides initial evidence that the Perdido Key beach mouse is susceptible to cutaneous B-cell lymphoma.  相似文献

Rapid characterisation of host specificity is important both in biological control of weeds and studies in ecology and evolution. A means for doing this was developed and tested on four species of leaf beetles of interest for biological control of the weed Mimosa pigra (Mimosaceae). We identified the most promising for the more detailed tests necessary to obtain release approval. The impact of time-dependent effects and effects of experience were also investigated as part of this study but were not detected. Short-term host specificity tests on adult feeding accurately predicted the results of longer term trials. The long-term trial showed that survival on a plant species depended on feeding on it. Hence short-term feeding trials can predict the longer term survival of adults on other plant species. Different feeding results were obtained in cut foliage versus entire plants but no consistent pattern was shown: of the two insect species tested, one species ate more of the cut material while the opposite was demonstrated for the second species. Species in order of priority for further consideration as biocontrol agents were Syphrea bibiana, Genaphthona sp., Syphrea sp. and Paria sp. The latter three species were probably not sufficiently specific for release. The tests done here allow the identification of the most likely species upon which to conduct the more laborious and difficult larval developmental tests, saving considerable resources.  相似文献

There is growing realization that intraspecific polyploidy in plants has important implications for the evolution of plant diversity and for plant and plant-herbivore community dynamics. Nonetheless, the rate at which polyploid cytotypes arise and their fate in local mixed-cytotype populations are not well understood. Although within- and especially among-population cytotype variation has been documented in many plants, particularly at the largest (continental) spatial scales, local and regional distributions of cytotypes have been well characterized only for a handful of species. Furthermore, few if any studies have addressed both local and regional patterns in the same plant species with sufficient power to detect cytotype variation on both scales. We assessed the co-occurrence and frequency distributions of diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid cytotypes of Solidago altissima (Asteraceae) at local and regional spatial scales, sampling across a zone of presumed ploidy-form overlap in the midwestern United States. Determining ploidy by flow cytometry, we found many local populations containing two or three cytotypes, with the relative frequencies of cytotypes varying dramatically even among neighboring populations. AFLP marker data suggest that polyploid cytotypes of S. altissima likely have multiple origins from different diploid lineages. Our results are consistent with recent perspectives on polyploidization as an evolutionarily dynamic phenomenon with frequent multiple origins of higher-ploidy cytotypes.  相似文献
