The co-ordination between respiration and wing beats in birds

Summary Investigations in 10 species showed that respiration of birds in flight is usually co-ordinated with wing beats, but the co-ordination is not obligatory. Respiration synchronous with wing beats (11 co-ordination) was found only in pigeons and crows, the other species exhibited one of 11 other types of co-ordination. Quails, ducks and pheasants, birds with relatively high wing beat frequencies (with relatively small wings) showed a 51 co-ordination. Within species, and even during a flight the type of co-ordination changed, and simultaneously there were sudden changes in the respiration frequency. For the most part, the beginning of inspiration was linked with the (end of) upstroke and the beginning of expiration with the end of downstroke.Issued as N.R.C.C. The Influence of Morphology on Prognosis in Acute Leukemia

The presence of definite cytoplasmic granulation in at least some of the malignant cells was used as the sole criterion to separate 156 patients with acute leukemia into two groups: 110 with myeloblastic (AML), and 46 with lymphoblastic or stem cell leukemia (ALL). The median survival from the onset of symptoms in patients with AML was 20 weeks, and those with ALL 37 weeks. The difference in survival in these two groups is much greater for patients under the age of 25 than for those over the age of 25.     

Analysis of tracer experiments V: Integral equations of perturbation-tracer analysis

An integral equation approach to perturbation-tracer analysis in steady-state multicompartment systems is formulated. The theory is developed for δ function perturbation and tracer inputs and extended to the case of continuous small perturbations and continuous tracer inputs. It is shown that the first order dependence of the initial entry function can then be expressed by means of an integral equation:
