Comparison of muscle force,muscle endurance,and electromyogram activity during an expedition at high altitude

Handgrip force (HF), maximal pinch force (MF), muscle endurance (ME), and the median power frequency (MdPF) of the activity shown in the electromyogram (EMG) were studied at various altitudes in eight normal healthy subjects. MF and ME were measured between the index finger and thumb, and all measurements were obtained at altitudes ranging from 610 to 4860 m during an expedition in the Qinghai Plateau in China. With the change in altitude HF, ME, and MF showed no significant change. Compared to the MdPF at 2260 m on ascent, the MdPF at other altitudes showed a significant decrease (P<0.01). Thus, we conclude that muscle performance (HF, MF, and ME) was not affected by the environment at high altitude. However, MdPF was affected and the mean MdPF at 610 m after the expedition did not recover to initial values of MdPF. We suggest these results may have been affected by fatigue and chronic exposure to the hypobaric hypoxic environment, since the members of the expedition party expressed feelings of sluggishness and fatigue after the expedition.     

Purification and properties of a low-redox-potential tetraheme cytochrome c3 from Shewanella putrefaciens.

Shewanella putrefaciens is a facultatively anaerobic bacterium in the gamma group of the proteobacteria, capable of utilizing a wide variety of anaerobic electron acceptors. An examination of its cytochrome content revealed the presence of a tetraheme, low-redox-potential (E'o = -233 mV), cytochrome c-type cytochrome with a molecular mass of 12,120 Da and a pI of 5.8. The electron spin resonance data indicate a bis-histidine coordination of heme groups. Reduction of ferric citrate was accompanied by oxidation of the cytochrome. The biochemical properties suggested that this protein was in the cytochrome c3 group, which is supported by N-terminal sequence data up to the first heme binding site.     

盾负泥虫对鸭跖草的专食性

盾负泥虫Lema scutellaris (Kraatz.)1年发生1代, 以成虫滞育。用与鸭跖草Commelina communis L. 同科及近缘科,属的植物对其食性进行测定,结果是食性单一,只取食鸭跖草。盾负泥虫的发生期与鸭跖草的苗期同步,幼虫的喜食与鸭跖草的多分枝特性相吻合。取食营养位与粘液细胞在鸭跖草植株上的分布及细胞的含糖量关系密切。     

中国角果毛茛属的增订

在编写《中国沙漠植物志补编》过程中,发现我国有角果毛茛属植物2种,弯喙角果毛茛,为我国分布新记录,角果毛茛名称有误,应订正。     

Regeneration of fertile transgenic indica (group 1) rice plants following microprojectile transformation of embryogenic suspension culture cells

Regenerable embryogenic suspensions of elite Indica (group 1) rice varieties IR24, IR64, IR72 and an advanced Indica rice breeding line IR57311-95-2-3 were established within 6–8 weeks from 3–4 week old calli derived from mature seeds. Transgenic rice plants were obtained by introducing a plasmid carrying genes encoding hygromycin phosphotransferase (hph, conferring resistance to hygromycin B) and ß-glucuronidase (uidA), both driven by the CaMV 35S promoter, via particle bombardment of embryogenic suspensions. The effect of osmotic conditioning on transformation was evaluated. Regenerated plants were resistant to hygromycin B and expressed the uidA (GUS) gene. The growth of mother plants (R₀) was normal and seeds were produced. Southern blot analysis of R₀ and R₁ plants showed that hygromycin resistant plants contained intact hph genes that were inherited in a Mendelian fashion. Nuclear integrations: challenges for mitochondrial DNA markers

The combined use of mitochondrial DNA markers and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques has greatly enhanced evolutionary studies. These techniques have also promoted the discovery of mitochondrial-like sequences in the nuclear genomes of many animals. While the nuclear sequences themselves are interesting, and capable of serving as valuable molecular tools, they can also confound phylogenetic and population genetic studies. Clearly, a better understanding of these phenomena and vigilance towards misleading data are needed.
