1. The biological impact of glaciation in Southern Hemisphere freshwaters is poorly understood. Several large rivers of eastern South Island, New Zealand, represent a mosaic of glaciated and non-glaciated regions, and are thus well-suited for studies of post-glacial recolonization.
2. We conducted mtDNA analyses of South Island's endemic non-migratory longjaw galaxiids Galaxias prognathus and G. cobitinis (Osmeriformes: Galaxiidae) to test hypotheses of post-glacial recolonization, and to assess the vicariant effects of Pleistocene mountain building.
3. We analysed the phylogeography of longjaw cytochrome b sequences from 38 sites in central South Island ( n  = 83). On the basis of our sampling it seems that G. prognathus and G. cobitinis have a parapatric distribution in the Waitaki River system, their disjunction broadly coinciding with three large post-glacial lakes. Waitaki clades of both species are deeply divergent relative to conspecific taxa in drainages to the north and south.
4. Tests for recent population growth – predicted under post-glacial expansion of G. prognathus – do not refute recent recolonization of streams above glaciated lakes in the Waitaki River drainage. The apparent absence of potential 'source' populations from non-glaciated regions suggests a post-glacial population decline for G. prognathus below the Waitaki lakes.
5. Molecular clock calibrations based on several freshwater vicariant events elsewhere in New Zealand supported the geologically-derived hypothesis of Waitaki–Canterbury drainage isolation approximately 300 ka.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Understanding the evolutionary origin of novel metazoanbody plans continues to be one of the most sought after answersin biology. Perhaps the most profound change that may have occurredin the Metazoa is the appearance of bilaterally symmetricalforms from a presumably radially symmetrical ancestor. The symmetryproperties of bilaterally symmetrical larval and adult metazoansare generally set up during the cleavage period while most "radially"symmetrical cnidarians do not display a stereotyped cleavageprogram. Ctenophores display biradial symmetry and may representone intermediate form in the transition to bilateral symmetry.The early development of cnidarians and ctenophores is comparedwith respect to the timing and mechanisms of axial determination.The origin of the dorsal-ventral axis, and indeed the relationshipsof the major longitudinal axes, in cnidarians, ctenophores,and bilaterian animals are far from certain. The realizationthat many of the molecular mechanisms of axial determinationare conserved throughout the Bilateria allows one to formulatea set of predictions as to their possible role in the originsof bilaterian ancestors.  相似文献

WATERS, S. J. P. & FERRY, B. W., 1989. Shingle-based wetlands at Dungeness . At Dungeness, a unique development of open water and natural wetland has occurred on the shingle beaches. Over 700–1000 years, low-lying areas have changed from saline lagoons into freshwater lakes which are now largely infilled by reedswamp and sallow carr. Since about 1970, the water-table has been lowered, by a combination of water abstraction and hydrological changes associated with gravel extraction. Water-table lowering has accelerated colonization by reedswamp and sallow carr, and has caused loss of sedge-rich marshland. Possible methods are suggested for promoting development of such marshland in artificial excavations.  相似文献

The detailed effects of diagenetic flattening on the graptolitc rhabdosomc have been investigated experimentally. The initial procedure, to test the effects of flattening on cylinders constructed from a variety of semi-brittle to plastic materials when compressed in a plaster 'matrix', demonstrates that a degree of rigidity is necessary to prevent lateral spread on diagenetic compression, even when lateral confining pressures are present. A second experiment demonstrates conclusively that the effects of flattening on the thecal style of Dicellograptus complanatus proposed by Briggs & Williams (1981; Lethaia 14) can be simulated. A model of an aseptate diplograptid produced a median depression when compressed but no preservational 'median septum', which is considered to be produced in several diplograptid taxa. It is shown that some diplograptids spread laterally along a median line when flattened in scalariform orientation although this has not yet been achieved experimentally owing to the high degree of compression required. □ Graptolithina, diagenesis, flattening,  相似文献

Abstract. Seedlings of Zea mays L. were grown in the dark at 27°C. Four-day-old seedlings were then exposed for 3 days to solutions equilibrated with gas mixtures to give O2 concentrations between 0.02 and 0.25 mol m?3. Root growth was impaired just as severely at 0.06 as 0.02 mol O2 m?3 while growth at 0.16 mol O2 m?3 was about the same as in solutions in equilibrium with air (0.25 mol O2 m?3). Growth of young seedlings at low O2 concentrations was inhibited to the same extent in nutrient solution and 0.5 ml m?3 CaCl2, showing that the adverse effect of O2 deficits on growth was not due to less uptake of inorganic nutrients. Furthermore, at low O2 concentrations neither exposure of the shoots to a relative humidity of 100% (26.0 g H2O m?3) nor excision of the entire shoot enhanced root growth relative to that in plants with shoots at a relative humidity of 50% (13.0 g H2O m?3). Therefore, for these seedlings growing in the dark, impairment of root growth at low O2 concentrations was not a consequence of water deficits in the shoot or of other shoot-root interactions. Total soluble sugars and amino acid concentrations were generally greater at low (0.02–0.06 mol O2m?3) than at high O2 concentrations (0.16–0.25 mol O2 m ?3). This applied specifically to the root apices (0–2 mm) and expanding (2–15 mm) tissue except in some experiments where sugar concentrations in expanding tissue were slightly greater at high than at low O2 concentrations. Critical O2 pressures for respiration of excised root segments were approximately 0.117 and 0.065 mol O2 m?3 in the expanding and expanded zones of the roots, respectively. In contrast, the critical O2 pressure exceeded 0.20 mol O2 m?3 in the apex, suggesting that O2 supply for metabolic processes is most likely to be sub-optimal in this zone. Our results show clearly that the adverse effects of low O2 concentrations are unlikely to be a consequence of substrate shortage for either respiration or synthesis of macromolecules; low rates of ATP regeneration in growing root tissues are the logical cause for impaired growth in young seedlings while they are being sustained by seed reserves.  相似文献
