Lecocarpus pinnatifidus is an endemic member of the Asteraceae occurring on only one island in the Galápagos archipelago. The capitula are large with female ray florets and male disc florets. They are self-compatible but this study suggests fruit set is pollen limited. Visits from Xylocopa darwini and other larger insect pollinators are rare, and small insects seem to be the main pollinators. Small insects carry few pollen grains and most likely mediate self-pollinations. Self-compatibility and seed set after selfing are the most common reproductive strategy in the Galápagos Islands and L. pinnatifidus seemingly fits well into this group.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 146 , 171–180.  相似文献

The relationship between the ontogenetic pattern of sex steroids and the differentiation of sexually dimorphic song in canaries of both sexes was studied. Songs were recorded to assess the temporal course of different developmental stages. Song parameters such as length and frequency of tours were measured. Parallel to behavioural observations, all birds were bled regularly every 20–30 days from the age of 15 days to day 235. The plasma samples were analyzed by RIA to measure testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol-17β (E2). The following results were obtained: 1) In young male canaries we distinguish three different stages of song development: subsong, starting at the age of 30 days, plastic song, and juvenile autumnal song finally giving way to the rigid and stable utterances of the reproductive period in next spring. During ontogeny the length and frequency of tours increase gradually. Female canaries were not observed singing regularly during their first year of life, whereas males sing very frequently. 2) Both sexes show tendencies to elevated titres of testosterone before the onset of juvenile moult. These titres correspond to those of paired males during the reproductive cycle. Song development is not correlated with the ontogenetic pattern of testosterone: the process of crystallization from the amorphic songs uttered by juveniles progresses gradually to the autumnal song in late autumn, when the titres of T in males are low (< 200 pg/ml). Female T and DHT levels during ontogeny correspond to those of the males. 3) There are sex differences in the estradiol pattern. The carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of C3 ecosystems is sensitive to water availability, and provides important information for the assessment of terrestrial carbon (C) sink/source activity. Here, we report the effects of plant available soil water (PAW) on community 13C signatures of temperate humid grassland. The 5‐year study was conducted on pastures exhibiting a large range of PAW capacity that were located on two site types: peat and mineral soils. The data set included the centennial drought year 2003, and data from wet years (2000 and 2002). Seasonal variation of PAW was modeled using PAW capacity of each pasture, precipitation inputs and evapotranspiration estimates. Community 13C signatures were derived from the δ13C of vegetation and segments of tail switch hair of cattle grown while grazing pastures. Hair 13C signatures provided an assimilation‐weighted 13C signal that integrated both spatial (paddock‐scale) and temporal (grazing season) variation of 13C signatures on a pasture. The δ13C of hair and vegetation increased with decreasing modeled PAW in the same way on mineral and peat soils. But, at a given PAW, the δ13C of hair was 2.6‰ less negative than that of vegetation, reflecting the diet‐hair isotopic shift. Furthermore, the δ13C of hair and vegetation on peat soil pastures was 0.5‰ more negative than on pastures situated on mineral soil. This may have resulted from a ~10 ppm CO2 enrichment of canopy air derived from ongoing peat mineralization. Community‐scale season‐mean 13C discrimination (Δ) exhibited a saturation‐type response towards season‐mean modeled PAW (r2=0.78), and ranged between 19.8‰ on soils with low PAW capacity during the drought year of 2003, and 21.4‰ on soils with high PAW capacity in a wet year. This indicated relatively small variation in season‐mean assimilation‐weighted pi/pa (0.68–0.75) between contrasting sites and years. However, this range is similar to that reported in other studies, which encompass the range from subtropical arid to humid temperate grassland. Furthermore, the tight relationship between season‐mean Δ and modeled mean PAW suggests that PAW may be used as proxy for Δ.  相似文献

The present authors have shown previously that both respiration rates and in vivo activities of the alternative oxidase (AOX) of leaves of Alocasia odora, a shade species, are lower than those in sun species, thereby optimizing energy production under limited light conditions (Noguchi et al., Australian Journal of Plant Physiology 28, 27–35, 2001). In the present study, mitochondria isolated from A. odora leaves were examined in order to investigate the biochemical basis for the differences in respiratory parameters. Alocasia odora and spinach plants were cultivated under both high and low light intensities, mitochondria were isolated from their leaves, and their respiratory properties compared. Mitochondrial content of leaf extracts from the two species was estimated using fumarase activities and antibody detection of porin (the voltage-dependent anion channel of the outer mitochondrial membrane). On a mitochondrial protein basis, spinach leaves showed higher capacities of the cytochrome pathway and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) than A. odora leaves. However, on a mitochondrial protein basis, A. odora showed higher capacities of AOX, which had a high affinity for ubiquinone when activated by pyruvate. Alocasia odora also had larger amounts of mitochondrial protein per leaf dry weight, even under severely shaded conditions, than spinach. Lower growth light intensity led to lower activities of most pathways and proteins tested in both species, especially glycine-dependent oxygen uptake. In the low light environment, most of the AOX protein in A. odora leaves was in its inactive, oxidized dimer form, but was converted to its reduced active form when plants were grown under high light. This shift may prevent over-reduction of the respiratory chain under photo-oxidative conditions.  相似文献

Hydra were disaggregated into single cells and maintained ina complex medium for a few days. The cells are capable of macromolecularsynthesis, of processing RNA, and of carrying out the formationof a nematocyst capsule. Single cells can be centrifuged intoaggregates which will develop into normal hydra. Changes inmorphology and cell composition are described. Interstitialcells after a 1-day delay resume their normal mitotic and differentiationactivity in the aggregates. The Measurement of Stomatal Responses to Stimuli in Leaves and Leaf Discs   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A comparison has been made of stomatal responses in intact leaves,leaf discs supplied with water via their cut edges and leafdiscs floating on water. Xanthium pennsylvanicum leaf discswatered via their cut edges appeared to be more turgid thanintact leaves; this considerably slowed down the rate of stomatalopening but it slightly increased the final steady-state stomatalopening. When the water potential of such leaf discs was loweredby pre-treatment with mannitol solutions rates of stomatal openingincreased whereas maximum steady-state openings decreased. In tobacco leaf discs floating on water the stomata in contactwith water were wider open than those in contact with normalair and they did not respond to treatment with carbon dioxide-freeair. The rate of photosynthesis was severely reduced in tobaccoleaf discs floating with the lower epidermis on water, mostprobably owing to the slow rate of diffusion of carbon dioxidein water. By floating such discs on osmotica the degree of stomatalopening was increased, however, a response to treatment withcarbon dioxide-free air was still not measurable. It is postulatedthat, on account of the relative unavailability of carbon dioxidefrom the water, the carbon dioxide concentration in the substomatalcavities of the lower surface is abnormally low, irrespectiveof whether ordinary air or carbon dioxide-free air is availableto the upper surface. A comparison between porometer readings and measurements ofsiliconerubber impressions of stomatal pores taken from insidethe porometer cup confirmed that the silicone-rubber impressionmethod of assessing stomatal responses to stimuli has severelimitations, especially at small stomatal apertures.  相似文献

Stomatal opening in Xanthium pennsylvanicum was found to besignificantly greater in blue light than in red. Experimentsin which leaves were placed in a closed system and allowed toestablish their own steady-state carbon dioxide concentrationshowed that when the CO2 concentration was about the same asthat in red, opening was much greater in blue light. Blue lightof low intensity could cause as great an opening as red of higherintensity, even though the CO2 concentration was much higherin blue. Stomatal opening in light is considered as involvingat least two reactions: (1) a response to the removal of CO2by photosynthesis; (2) a response to blue light not dependenton the removal of CO2. Blue light became increasingly effective, relative to red, asthe length of night was increased over the range 2 to 14 hours.This might, in part, explain previously observed effects ofnight length on rate of opening in light. The initial very rapid phase of closure in darkness appearedto be independent of CO2 accumulation, for it was not preventedby flushing the intercellular spaces with air free of CO2. Itis suggested that closure in darkness, like opening in light,should be considered as involving components both dependentupon, and independent of, CO2 concentration.  相似文献
