In this study some comparative observations on the growth-rate and year-class strength of bream, Abramis brama , in three Shropshire-Cheshire meres are given. All populations are exposed to variable recruitment. The occurrence of four strong year-classes (1959, 1966, 1969,1973) suggests that climate is an important factor influencing spawning success. Water temperatures ≥16°C in July and August may be particularly important. All other intervening year-classes are absent. The growth-rate of bream in Tatton Mere and Ellesmere Mere is good ( L ∞= 541–561 mm) but comparatively poor ( L ∞= 448 mm) in Cole Mere. The significance of population density, food supply and parasitic infestation by Ligula intestinalis is discussed. 相似文献

Seasonal changes in the vertical and horizontal distribution of young (I +–II +) perch in Rostherne Mere, a deep (max. depth 31.0 m) eutrophic lake are described using sonar. During the summer (June–August), perch were present within the thermocline (9–14° C) between 7 and 10 m. There was no significant difference between samples during this period, nor was there any evidence of shoaling. From September onwards perch moved into deeper waters. By late winter fish had become patchy in their distribution. Total numbers, during the summer, were estimated to be 988 ha 1 with 95% confidence limits of ±115 (biomass 98.8 kg ha −1 ). Densities (no. m−3 ) fell by over 90% after the autumn overturn. The implications for predators are discussed. Acoustic sampling provides a useful, non-destructive method of sampling eutrophic lakes on a routine basis. Information obtained is of ecological, behavioural and physiological interest. 相似文献

Batches of roach from two contrasting habitats were exercised in a flume at various water velocities for 1 h, and muscle metabolite levels were determined. It was found that the percentage change in lactate was greater in fish from the still water habitat than that in their running water counterparts, and it is proposed that natural conditioning of fish to water flow may be one of the main factors responsible. 相似文献

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major cause of heart failure (HF) with the progressive worsening of cardiac performance due to structural and functional alterations. Therefore, we studied cardiac function in adult mice following MI using the Millar pressure-volume (P-V) conductance catheter system in vivo during the later phase of compensatory remodeling and decompensation to HF. We evaluated load-dependent and -independent parameters in control and 2-, 4-, 6-, and 10-wk post-MI mice and integrated changes in function with changes in gene expression. Our results indicated a significant deterioration of cardiac function in post-MI mice over time, reflected first by systolic dysfunction, followed by a transient improvement before further decline in both systolic and diastolic function. Associated with the function and adaptive remodeling were transient changes in fetal gene and extracellular matrix gene expression. However, undermining the compensatory remodeling response was a continual decline in cardiac contractility, which promoted the transition into failure. Our study provided a scheme of integrated cardiac function and gene expression changes occurring during the adaptive and maladaptive response of the heart independent of systemic vascular properties during the transition to HF following MI in mice. P-V loop analysis was used to quantitatively evaluate the gradual deterioration in cardiac function post-MI. P-V loop analysis was found to be an appropriate method for assessment of global cardiac function under varying load-dependent and -independent conditions in the murine model with many similarities to data obtained from larger animals and humans. 相似文献

The nucleic acid metabolism of various tissues of normal and dystrophic hamsters has been studied as a function of animal age and progression of the disease. Muscle weights were significantly heavier in the dystrophic animals at 98 and 225 days, but not 28 days after birth. DNA synthesis and the concentrations of DNA and RNA were markedly higher in the dystrophic diaphragm, soleus and extensor digitorum longus muscles after 28 days of age. The dystrophic process appears to be specific to muscle, since the nucleic acid metabolism of the kidney was unaffected. 相似文献
