The absence of a pelagic larval stage and brood care has evolved very few times in coral reef fishes. Damselfishes, a widely represented group with more than 380 species, includes only three such species, the monotypic Acanthochromis polyacanthus, and the two Altrichthys species, Altrichthys azurelineatus and Altrichthys curatus. In a recent study, Cooper et al. provided a comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis for the damselfish family, based on mitochondrial and nuclear sequences, with more than 100 species that included all extant genera (Cooper et al., 2009). A. polyacanthus and sequences from formalin-preserved tissue of A. curatus did not cluster together, indicating that brood care may have evolved independently twice in damselfishes. Here, we use mitochondrial and nuclear molecular markers from fresh specimens of both Altrichthys species. We found that Altrichthys and Acanthochromis are closest relatives, which suggests that brood care may have evolved only once in damselfishes. Due to the limited geographic range of Altrichthys (western Philippines) and the abundant presence of Acanthochromis in that region, we also suggest that brood care may have originated in that region.  相似文献

This study uses PCR-derived marker systems to investigate the extent and distribution of genetic variability of 53 Garnacha accessions coming from Italy, France and Spain. The samples studied include 28 Italian accessions (named Tocai rosso in Vicenza area; Alicante in Sicily and Elba island; Gamay perugino in Perugia province; Cannonau in Sardinia), 19 Spanish accessions of different types (named Garnacha tinta, Garnacha blanca, Garnacha peluda, Garnacha roja, Garnacha erguida, Garnacha roya) and 6 French accessions (named Grenache and Grenache noir). In order to verify the varietal identity of the samples, analyses based on 14 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci were performed. The presence of an additional allele at ISV3 locus (151 bp) was found in four Tocai rosso accessions and in a Sardinian Cannonau clone, that are, incidentally, chimeras. In addition to microsatellite analysis, intravarietal variability study was performed using AFLP, SAMPL and M-AFLP molecular markers. AFLPs could discriminate among several Garnacha samples; SAMPLs allowed distinguishing few genotypes on the basis of their geographic origin, whereas M-AFLPs revealed plant-specific markers, differentiating all accessions. Italian samples showed the greatest variability among themselves, especially on the basis of their different provenance, while Spanish samples were the most similar, in spite of their morphological diversity.  相似文献

Coupled behavioural observations and acoustical recordings of aggressive dyadic contests showed that the mudskipper Periophthalmodon septemradiatus communicates acoustically while out of water. An analysis of intraspecific variability showed that specific acoustic components may act as tags for individual recognition, further supporting the sounds' communicative value. A correlative analysis amongst acoustical properties and video-acoustical recordings in slow-motion supported first hypotheses on the emission mechanism. Acoustic transmission through the wet exposed substrate was also discussed. These observations were used to support an "exaptation hypothesis", i.e. the maintenance of key adaptations during the first stages of water-to-land vertebrate eco-evolutionary transitions (based on eco-evolutionary and palaeontological considerations), through a comparative bioacoustic analysis of aquatic and semiterrestrial gobiid taxa. In fact, a remarkable similarity was found between mudskipper vocalisations and those emitted by gobioids and other soniferous benthonic fishes.  相似文献

Interacting in the peripersonal space requires coordinated arm and eye movements to visual targets in depth. In primates, the medial posterior parietal cortex (PPC) represents a crucial node in the process of visual-to-motor signal transformations. The medial PPC area V6A is a key region engaged in the control of these processes because it jointly processes visual information, eye position and arm movement related signals. However, to date, there is no evidence in the medial PPC of spatial encoding in three dimensions. Here, using single neuron recordings in behaving macaques, we studied the neural signals related to binocular eye position in a task that required the monkeys to perform saccades and fixate targets at different locations in peripersonal and extrapersonal space. A significant proportion of neurons were modulated by both gaze direction and depth, i.e., by the location of the foveated target in 3D space. The population activity of these neurons displayed a strong preference for peripersonal space in a time interval around the saccade that preceded fixation and during fixation as well. This preference for targets within reaching distance during both target capturing and fixation suggests that binocular eye position signals are implemented functionally in V6A to support its role in reaching and grasping.  相似文献

Methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is reversibly converted into homocysteine. Homocysteine is an independent cardiovascular risk factor frequently associated with the insulin resistance syndrome. The effects of insulin on methionine and homocysteine kinetics in vivo are not known. Six middle-aged male volunteers were infused with L-[methyl-2H3,1-13C]methionine before (for 3 h) and after (for 3 additional hours) an euglycemic hyperinsulinemic (150 mU/l) clamp. Steady-state methionine and homocysteine kinetics were determined using either plasma (i.e., those of methionine) or intracellular (i.e., those of plasma homocysteine) enrichments. By use of plasma enrichments, insulin decreased methionine rate of appearance (Ra; both methyl- and carbon Ra) by 25% (P < 0.003 vs. basal) and methionine disposal into proteins by 50% (P < 0.0005), whereas it increased homocysteine clearance by approximately 70% (P < 0.025). With intracellular enrichments, insulin increased all kinetic rates, mainly because homocysteine enrichment decreased by approximately 40% (P < 0.001). In particular, transmethylation increased sixfold (P < 0.02), transsulfuration fourfold (P = 0.01), remethylation eightfold (P < 0.025), and clearance eightfold (P < 0.004). In summary, 1) physiological hyperinsulinemia stimulated homocysteine metabolic clearance irrespective of the model used; and 2) divergent changes in plasma methionine and homocysteine enrichments were observed after hyperinsulinemia, resulting in different changes in methionine and homocysteine kinetics. In conclusion, insulin increases homocysteine clearance in vivo and may thus prevent homocysteine accumulation in body fluids. Use of plasma homocysteine as a surrogate of intracellular methionine enrichment, after acute perturbations such as insulin infusion, needs to be critically reassessed.  相似文献

Sardinian wine strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae used to make sherry-like wines form a biofilm at the air-liquid interface at the end of ethanolic fermentation, when grape sugar is depleted and further growth becomes dependent on access to oxygen. Here, we show that FLO11, which encodes a hydrophobic cell wall glycoprotein, is required for the air-liquid interfacial biofilm and that biofilm cells have a buoyant density greater than the suspending medium. We propose a model for biofilm formation based on an increase in cell surface hydrophobicity occurring at the diauxic shift. This increase leads to formation of multicellular aggregates that effectively entrap carbon dioxide, providing buoyancy. A visible biofilm appears when a sufficient number of hydrophobic cell aggregates are carried to and grow on the liquid surface.  相似文献
