Influence of respiratory drive on upper airway resistance in normal men   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The variations in nasal and pharyngeal resistance induced by changes in the central inspiratory drive were studied in 10 normal men. To calculate resistances we measured upper airway pressures with two low-bias flow catheters; one was placed at the tip of the epiglottis and the other in the posterior nasopharynx, and we measured flow with a Fleisch no. 3 pneumotachograph connected to a tightly fitting mask. Both resistances were obtained continuously during CO2 rebreathing (Read's method) and during the 2 min after a 1-min voluntary maximal hyperventilation. The inspiratory drive was estimated by measurements of inspiratory pressure generated at 0.1 s after the onset of inspiration (P0.1) and by the mean inspiratory flow (VT/TI). In each subject both resistances decreased during CO2 rebreathing; these decreases were correlated with the increase in P0.1. During the posthyperventilation period, ventilation fell below base line in seven subjects; this was accompanied by an increase in both nasal and pharyngeal resistances. These resistances increased exponentially as VT/TI decreased. Parallel changes in nasal and pharyngeal resistances were seen during CO2 stimulus and during the period after the hyperventilation. We conclude that 1) the indexes quantifying the inspiratory drive reflect the activation of nasopharyngeal dilator muscles (as assessed by the changes in upper airway resistance) and 2) both nasal and pharyngeal resistances are similarly influenced by changes in the respiratory drive.  相似文献

The molecular and electronic structure of the modified prosthetic group of sulfhemoglobin (SHb) was investigated by 1H NMR for the low-spin ferric cyano-met and high-spin ferrous deoxy sulfhemoglobin complex. The 1H NMR resonances of the two subunits in the cyano-met SHb complex were differentiated on the basis of the differential stability toward regeneration of native subunits. The subunit origin for the two sets of resonances was established by formation of the sulfglobin protein for the isolated alpha-chain prior to assembling with the native beta-subunit to yield a tetramer with sulfhemin in the alpha-subunits. The subunit peak assignments establish that it is the beta-subunit of SHb which regenerates more rapidly to native protein. The hyperfine shifted sulfhemin peaks were assigned based on steady-state nuclear Overhauser effects which demonstrated that similarly hyperfine shifted peaks exhibit the same dipolar connectivities observed in the analogous sulfmyoglobin complex. Hence it is concluded that pyrrole B is the site of reaction in both hemoglobin and myoglobin. The initially formed SHb complex failed to equilibrate to yield a complex with a sulfhemin sufficiently stable to extraction as found previously for sulfmyoglobin. However, apoHb readily bound the green sulfhemin extracted from the terminal alkaline equilibration product of sulfmyoglobin. The inhibition on the equilibration to the alkaline form with the exocyclic thiolene ring is attributed to the interaction with Val FG5. The observations of the same dipolar connectivities among similarly hyperfine shifted peaks in the directly prepared and reconstituted SHb complexes further support the same structure for the sulfhemin in sulfmyoglobin and SHb. The strongly hyperfine shifted peaks in the deoxy form of both SHb complexes were found very similar to those of the analogous sulfmyoglobin complexes. The proximal His labile ring proton signal appears to experience a 5- to 10-ppm decrease upon conversion of a native globin to sulfglobin. This attenuation may provide a probe for differentiating chlorins and hemins in globin pockets.  相似文献

Maize is a cereal particularly lacking in tryptophan, which is the precursor of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. Altough complementary foods may eliminate tryptophan deficiency, serotonin deficiency may often continue to exist because of competition made by other Large Neutral Amino Acids (LNAA) against tryptophan for neuron access, since they use the same carrier to cross the blood-brain barrier. Thus serotonin synthesis depends on two variables: the amount of tryptophan and the trp/LNAA ratio (R). “R” is lowest for common maize, low for beans and, as a rule, for most vegetable foods, higher for meat. So, when maize is the preponderant food in the meal, the “R” value lowers and so in parallel serotonin synthesis does. Serotonin deficiency involves several behavioural consequences, such as the tendency towards aggressive behaviour or the religious fanaticism. Among native american populations, these consequences appear, as a rule, positively correlated with maize alimentary dependence (Aztecs appear as those who greatly suffered from serotonin deficiency). In the world these are thinkable for some african populations (i.e. Zulu) or european (i.e. Balkan peoples).  相似文献

The assimilatory activity of cotyledons can play an essential role in the survival of seedlings with a slow and delayed development of primary leaves. Changes in the photosynthetic activity of the cotyledon, from the onset of greening through senescence, were studied in two such plants, carob and sunflower, in order to determine its efficiency and duration, also in connection with the achievement of assimilatory autonomy by the plantlet. Chlorophyll analyses showed that the cotyledon's chloroplasts reached maximal greening in plantlets with a pair of expanded leaves. In contrast, the cotyledon's photosynthetic activity, measured as the rate of oxygen release, started to decrease early, before expansion of primary leaves. The decrease was due to the inactivation of a number of photosystem II (PSII) units, as revealed by immunodetection of breackdown products of the reaction centre's D1 and D2 thylakoid proteins. No signals of PSII alteration were noticed in the primary leaf chloroplasts that differentiated under the same environmental conditions. The damage to the cotyledon PSII, occurring in a non-photoinhibitory situation, might be due to a slower rate of turnover of D1 polypeptide than in the leaf thylakoids. The differential turnover of this protein in cotyledons and in leaves might represent an organ-specific regulation of the photosynthetic activity. The peculiarity of the cotyledon thylakoids make these organs useful objects for studying the metabolic cycle of both D1 and D2 proteins in vivo, under non-photoinhibiting conditions.  相似文献
