Survivorship and growth of seedlings of four dipterocarp species (Dipterocarpus actangulus, D. globosus, Dryobalanops aromatica, Dryobalanops lanceolata) were studied for 2.5 years in a mixed dipterocarp forest in Sarawak, East Malaysia. Predispersal seed predation rates were larger forD. globosus (75%) thanD. lanceolata (27–34%) andD. aromatica (18–26%). Less than 20% of the twoDryobalanops seeds were damaged by vertebrates after seed dispersal. During the period from seed dispersal to the time when the seedlings had shed cotyledons, more dispersed seeds died in the twoDipterocarpus (ca 90%) than the twoDryobalanops (ca 60–70%). The major mortality factors during this period were uprooted and seed/seedling predation by insects or vertebrates. After the seedlings shed cotyledons, all species showed constant mortality rates of 34, 15–16, 17 and 6%/year forD. actangulus, D. lanceolata, D. aromatica andD. globosus, respectively, in the forest understorey. Mortality was lower in less shaded conditions than in more shaded ones forD. aromatica andD. actangulus, but not significantly different forD. lanceolata andD. globosus. A majority of dead seedlings were killed by fallen branches or were found standing with wilted leaves, probably due to water stress. No significant correlation was found between seed/seedling mortality and distance from mother trees or the initial density of seeds/seedings for all species. The mean leaf production was positively correlated with the estimated diffuse light factor of their habitats for each species.  相似文献

Mn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Fe-SOD were isolated from Methylomonas J, an aerobic methylotrophic bacterium, grown in methylamine media containing either manganese (Mn-rich medium) or iron (Fe-rich medium), respectively. The specific activity of the Mn-SOD was 2250 units mg-1 (mol of Mn)-1 (mol of dimer)-1, and the metal content of the enzyme was 0.98 mol of Mn and 0.12 mol of Fe per mole of dimer, while those of Fe-SOD were 88.5 units mg-1 (mol of Fe)-1 (mol of dimer)-1 and 1.04 mol of Fe and 0.02 mol of Mn. The electrophoretic mobilities in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate, with or without urea, and the chromatographic behavior on an HPLC column using an octadodecyl silicated column and a gel permeation column were identical. Amino acid compositions were practically indistinguishable in both SODs. The enzyme activity was restored by dialysis of an apoprotein obtained from the Mn-enzyme with either manganese sulfate or ferrous ammonium sulfate up to an activity level similar to that for the native Mn-SOD and the native Fe-SOD, respectively. The same result has been reported with the reconstitution using an apoprotein obtained from the Fe-enzyme [Yamakura, F., Matsumoto, T., & Terauchi, K. (1990) Free Radical Res. Commun. (in press)]. These results suggest the possibility that both types of SODs are composed of a single apoprotein synthesized in cells grown in either the Fe-rich medium or the Mn-rich medium.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of ethanol on the inactivation of Saccharomyces pastorianus by a two‐stage system with low‐pressure carbon dioxide microbubbles (two‐stage MBCO2) was investigated. Zero and >5 log reductions of S. pastorianus populations suspended in physiological saline (PS) containing 0% and 10% ethanol, respectively, occurred by the two‐stage MBCO2 at a mixing vessel pressure of 1 MPa and a heating coil temperature of 40°C. Conversely, the detected number of surviving S. pastorianus cells in PS containing 5% ethanol was higher in yeast and mold agar (YMA, an optimum agar) than YMA with 2.5% sodium chloride, followed by yeast nitrogen base agar (YNBA, a minimum agar). The fluorescence polarization of S. pastorianus in PS containing 5% and 10% ethanol increased similarly with exposure time in the heating coil of two‐stage MBCO2 and was correlated with the surviving cell number measured in YNBA. The intracellular pH (pHin) of S. pastorianus in PS containing 5% ethanol decreased linearly with exposure time in the heating coil of two‐stage MBCO2. Also, the pHin‐lowering of S. pastorianus in PS containing 10% ethanol was drastically caused by two‐stage MBCO2 at 1 min exposure time in the heating coil but then stayed constant until 5 min, agreeing with the inactivation efficiency. Therefore, ethanol in S. pastorianus suspension was suggested to accelerate the cell membrane injury caused by two‐stage MBCO2. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Aims A better understanding of wood litter decomposition is essential for predicting responses of forest ecosystems to global climate change. Recent studies suggest that chemical properties of wood litters, rather than physical ones such as wood density, are more important for interspecific differences in wood decomposition rates. However, empirical data are still limited, especially for tropical trees. In addition, decomposition rate of wood litter often varies with time, which makes interspecific comparison difficult. We studied the wood decomposition of 32 rainforest trees to elucidate (i) the degree of interspecific variation in wood decomposition rate of a given size and configuration and (ii) if initial wood density and water permeability are consistent predictors of the overall decomposition rate and its pattern over time. Methods A common garden decomposition experiment was conducted in a tropical rainforest in Malaysian Borneo for 32 native tree species. Small wood sticks were set on the forest floor and the weight loss was monitored monthly for 2.7 years.Important findings We found large variation in the wood decomposition rate (a 49-fold range), suggesting that we need to consider this variation when calculating community-level carbon dynamics of tropical rain forests. The physical traits of wood, i.e. wood density and water permeability, were related to wood decomposition rate and its pattern over time. Decomposition half-time related positively and negatively to initial wood density and water permeability, respectively. The time-dependent-rate model fitted better for 18 species (56% of the study species) that had higher water permeabilities than the others, suggesting that micelle porosity in wood relates to temporal changes in decomposition rate.  相似文献

Structural ring-opening of lactones driven by enzymatic polymerization has been performed using low concentration dosages of surfactant-coated lipases in organic media. By comparison, enzymatic polymerization rate with coated lipase proceeded at a rate 100-fold better than native powder. Similarly a higher polymeric molecular weight (21,300), narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn=1.9) and better conversion (100%) were obtained following polyesterification tests with surfactant-coated lipase.  相似文献

To clarify a statistical basis of the empirical fact designated as the quasi-1/2 power law of tree height in stratified natural forest communities, a derivative of Pearson's type VII distribution was adopted and used for describing the frequency distribution of individual tree height in a subpopulation extracted from a forest stand by the symmetric type difference diagram already proposed for the stratification of samples. Limited by the quasi-1/2 power law of tree height, all the coefficients of Pearson's type VII distribution were expressed as empirical equations of tree density in a subpopulation obtained from the stratification of samples. These empirical equations led to the normalized density function of tree height and gave a statistical basis for the quasi-1/2 power law of tree height. In addition to tree height data, the stem diameter at breast height and tree weight data for a forest stand were also stratified into subpopulations by using symmetric type difference diagrams. In conclusion, a new system was proposed for describing the dependence of mean tree height, mean stem diameter at breast height, and mean tree weight on tree density in a subpopulation.  相似文献

Questions: 1. Are trees in a Bornean tropical rain forest associated with a particular habitat? 2. Does the strength of habitat association with the species‐specific optimal habitat increase with tree size? Location : A 52‐ha plot in a mixed dipterocarp forest in a heterogeneous landscape at the Lambir Hills National Park, Sarawak, East Malaysia. Methods : Ten species from the Sterculiaceae were chosen as representative of all species in the plot, on the assumption that competition among closely related species is more stringent than that among more distantly related taxa. Their habitat associations were tested using data from a 52‐ha plot by a torus‐translation test. Results : The torus‐translation test showed that eight out of the ten species examined had significant association with at least one habitat. We could not find negative species‐habitat associations for rare species, probably due to their small sample sizes. Among four species small trees were less strongly associated with habitat than large trees, implying competitive exclusion of trees in suboptimal habitats. The other four species showed the opposite pattern, possibly owing to the smaller sample size of large trees. A habitat had a maximum of three species with which it was significantly positively associated. Conclusions : For a species to survive in population equilibrium in a landscape, habitats in which ‘source’ subpopulations can be sustained without subsidy from adjacent habitats are essential. Competition is most severe among related species whose source subpopulations share the same habitat. On the evidence of source subpopulations identified by positive species‐habitat association, species‐habitat association reduces the number of confamilial competitors. Our results therefore indicate that edaphic niche specialization contributes to coexistence of species of Sterculiaceae in the plot, consistent with the expectations of equilibrium hypotheses.  相似文献

Many masting species switch resources between vegetative growth and reproduction in mast and non-mast years. Although masting of oak species is well known, there have been few investigations of the relationship between vegetative growth and reproduction based on long-term monitoring data, especially in evergreen oaks of subgenus Cyclobalanopsis. We investigated annual variations over 13?years in acorn and leaf production of three evergreen oak species in subgenus Cyclobalanopsis, genus Quercus (Fagaceae)??Q. acuta, Q. salicina and Q. sessilifolia??in western Japan. In these species, the maturation of acorns occurs in the second autumn after flowering, which is known as a biennial-fruiting habit. We found a pattern of acorn production and masting in alternate years that was synchronized in all three species. Masting was not correlated with temperature and precipitation. Annual leaf-fall also showed 2-year cycle in the three oak species; peak years were synchronized between species and peak leaf-fall alternated with acorn production in all three species. Furthermore, there was a significant negative correlation between acorn and leaf production in all three species. Data showing 2-year cycles of acorn and leaf production and the negative correlation between them supports the hypothesis of resource switching between vegetative growth and reproduction. The 2-year cycle might be the basic, intrinsic rhythm of resource allocation in biennial-fruiting Cyclobalanopsis species.  相似文献
