This research investigates the carbon footprint of the lifecycle of console games, using the example of PlayStation®3 distribution in the UK. We estimate total carbon equivalent emissions for an average 8.8‐gigabyte (GB) game based on data for 2010. The bulk of emissions are accounted for by game play, followed by production and distribution. Two delivery scenarios are compared: The first examines Blu‐ray discs (BDs) delivered by retail stores, and the second, games files downloaded over broadband Internet. Contrary to findings in previous research on music distribution, distribution of games by physical BDs results in lower greenhouse gas emissions than by Internet download. The estimated carbon emissions from downloading only fall definitively below that of BDs for games smaller than 1.3 GB. Sensitivity analysis indicates that as average game file sizes increase, and the energy intensity of the Internet falls, the file size at which BDs would result in lower emissions than downloads could shift either up‐ or downward over the next few years. Overall, the results appear to be broadly applicable to title games within the European Union (EU), and for larger‐than‐average sized games in the United States. Further research would be needed to confirm whether similar findings would apply in future years with changes in game size and Internet efficiency. The study findings serve to illustrate why it is not always true that digital distribution of media will have lower carbon emissions than distribution by physical means when file sizes are large.  相似文献

The electronic circular dichroism spectra of achiral product “Lumogen F Red” (ROT‐300) in four different chiral solvents are recorded at different temperatures. DFT calculations allow to identify two enantiomeric conformers for ROT‐300. In vacuo they are equally populated; in chiral solvents one enantiomer prevails. Menstrual cycle-associated changes in reproductive hormones affect body temperature in women. We aimed to characterize the interaction between the menstrual, circadian, and scheduled sleep-wake cycles on body temperature regulation. Eight females entered the laboratory during the midfollicular (MF) and midluteal (ML) phases of their menstrual cycle for an ultradian sleep-wake cycle procedure, consisting of 36 cycles of 60-minute wake episodes alternating with 60-minute nap opportunities, in constant bed-rest conditions. Core body temperature (CBT) and distal skin temperature (DT) were recorded and used to calculate a distal-core gradient (DCG). Melatonin, sleep, and subjective sleepiness were also recorded. The circadian variation of DT and DCG was not affected by menstrual phase. DT and DCG showed rapid, large nap episode-dependent increases, whereas CBT showed slower, smaller nap episode-dependent decreases. DCG values were significantly reduced for most of the wake episode in an overall 60-minute wake/60-minute nap cycle during ML compared to MF, but these differences were eliminated at the wake-to-nap lights-out transition. Nap episode-dependent decreases in CBT were further modulated as a function of both circadian and menstrual factors, with nap episode-dependent deceases occurring more prominently during the late afternoon/evening in ML, whereas nap episode-dependent DT and DCG increases were not significantly affected by menstrual phase but only circadian phase. Circadian rhythms of melatonin secretion, DT, and DCG were significantly phase-advanced relative to CBT and sleep propensity rhythms. This study explored how the thermoregulatory system is influenced by an interaction between circadian phase and vigilance state and how this is further modulated by the menstrual cycle. Current results agree with the thermophysiological cascade model of sleep and indicate that despite increased CBT during ML, heat loss mechanisms are maintained at a similar level during nap episodes, which may allow for comparable circadian sleep propensity rhythms between menstrual phases.  相似文献

Adiponectin and resistin's possible roles in weight regulation have received little attention. We tested the hypothesis that adipokine levels predict future weight gain in women in the Nurses' Health Study. Among women who provided blood samples in 1990, we studied 1,063 women who did not develop diabetes (“healthy”) and 984 women who subsequently developed diabetes. Total and high‐molecular‐weight (HMW) adiponectin and resistin levels were measured using enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Women who did not developed diabetes had a mean BMI of 26.3 ± 6.0 kg/m2 at baseline and gained 2.0 ± 6.1 kg over 4 years. Women who developed diabetes had a mean BMI of 30.1 ± 5.4 kg/m2 at baseline, and gained 2.4 ± 7.1 kg over 4 years. In women who did not developed diabetes, higher baseline levels of total and HMW adiponectin were associated with significantly greater weight gain after adjustment for age, BMI, physical activity, diet, and other covariates: women in the highest quintile of total adiponectin gained 3.18 kg compared to women in the lowest quintile who gained 0.80 kg (fully adjusted; P for trend <0.0001). Adiponectin was not significantly associated with weight gain in women who subsequently developed diabetes. Resistin levels were not associated with weight gain in either women who did or did not develop diabetes during the follow‐up. We conclude that elevated adiponectin levels are associated with higher weight gain in healthy women, independent of confounding risk factors. High adiponectin production by adipocytes might be a sign of “healthy” adipose tissue with further capacity to store fat.  相似文献

Protein engineering approaches are currently being devised to improve the inhibitory properties of plant proteinase inhibitors against digestive proteinases of herbivorous insects. Here we engineered a potent hybrid inhibitor of aspartate and cysteine digestive proteinases found in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say. Three cathepsin D inhibitors (CDIs) from stressed potato and tomato were first compared in their potency to inhibit digestive cathepsin D-like activity of the insect. After showing the high inhibitory potency of tomato CDI (M(r) approximately 21 kDa), an approximately 33-kDa hybrid inhibitor was generated by fusing this inhibitor to the N terminus of corn cystatin II (CCII), a potent inhibitor of cysteine proteinases. Inhibitory assays with recombinant forms of CDI, CCII, and CDI-CCII expressed in Escherichia coli showed the CDI-CCII fusion to exhibit a dual inhibitory effect against cystatin-sensitive and cathepsin D-like enzymes of the potato beetle, resulting in detrimental effects against 3rd-instar larvae fed the hybrid inhibitor. The inhibitory potency of CDI and CCII was not altered after their fusion, as suggested by IC(50) values for the interaction of CDI-CCII with target proteinases similar to those measured for each inhibitor. These observations suggest the potential of plant CDIs and cystatins as functional inhibitory modules for the design of effective broad-spectrum, hybrid inhibitors of herbivorous insect cysteine and aspartate digestive proteinases.  相似文献

Little is known about the sources of acetyl-CoA used for the synthesis of malonyl-CoA, a key regulator of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation in the heart. In perfused rat hearts, we previously showed that malonyl-CoA is labeled from both carbohydrates and fatty acids. This study was aimed at assessing the mechanisms of incorporation of fatty acid carbons into malonyl-CoA. Rat hearts were perfused with glucose, lactate, pyruvate, and a fatty acid (palmitate, oleate or docosanoate). In each experiment, substrates were (13)C-labeled to yield singly or/and doubly labeled acetyl-CoA. The mass isotopomer distribution of malonyl-CoA was compared with that of the acetyl moiety of citrate, which reflects mitochondrial acetyl-CoA. In the presence of labeled glucose or lactate/pyruvate, the (13)C labeling of malonyl-CoA was up to 2-fold lower than that of mitochondrial acetyl-CoA. However, in the presence of a fatty acid labeled in its first acetyl moiety, the (13)C labeling of malonyl-CoA was up to 10-fold higher than that of mitochondrial acetyl-CoA. The labeling of malonyl-CoA and of the acetyl moiety of citrate is compatible with peroxisomal beta-oxidation forming C(12) and C(14) acyl-CoAs and contributing >50% of the fatty acid-derived acetyl groups that end up in malonyl-CoA. This fraction increases with the fatty acid chain length. By supplying acetyl-CoA for malonyl-CoA synthesis, peroxisomal beta-oxidation may participate in the control of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation in the heart. In addition, this pathway may supply some acyl groups used in protein acylation, which is increasingly recognized as an important regulatory mechanism for many biochemical processes.  相似文献

RFLP of ITS rDNA is proposed as a useful tool for molecular identification of the most common species of biverticillate penicillia. 60 isolates were analysed representing 13 species and 21 unique sequences were produced. The combination of five restriction enzymes was successful in separating 12 species. However, the variety Penicillium purpurogenum var. rubrisclerotium remained indistinguishable from Penicillium funiculosum. P. funiculosum appeared as the most confused species, being mis-identified with Penicillium miniolutum and Penicillium pinophilum, which were originally part of the species, and with P. purpurogenum perhaps because of the common production of red pigment. Penicillium variabile was difficult to investigate as introns were found on half of the isolates. Penicillium piceum, Penicillium rugulosum, Penicillium loliense, Penicillium erythromellis and P. purpurogenum were homogeneous from molecular and morphological positions and corresponded to a well circumscribed taxon. Furthermore, intraspecific variability was evidenced within P. pinophilum and P. funiculosum. The ex-type isolate of P. funiculosum produced a unique pattern. The method is sensitive, rapid and inexpensive and can be used for isolate identification of the biverticillate species. It is recommended particularly when many isolates have to be authentificated prior to analysis for phylogenetic assessment or population genetics.  相似文献
