Abstract

A Cytological study of peach leaves, chlorotic or regreening after treatment with salt solutions. — Whitening and regreening (for treatment with solutions containing Fe) leaves of chlorotic (Fe deficient) peaches were examined both at the optical and the electron microscope. The nuclei, as seen at the optical microscope, and the plastids infrastructures of chlorotic leaves sharply differ from the same structure of the leaves of virused plants. The differentiation of plastids of peach chlorotic leaves is arrested at a very early stage comparable to that of proplastids in etiolated plants before a vescicolar body is formed. In peach plastids a prolamellar body is never formed, not even during the greening of plastids. This is a further confirmation that such a structure, although normal in etiolated and genetically variegated plants, does not represent a fixed stage during differentiation of the lamellar system.

The present observations put into evidence that, even when the formation of lamellae is not immediate, the formation of the prolamellar body is not a necessary condition for the further development of the lamellar apparatus.  相似文献

A survey of all the 154 scientific publications of Emilio Battaglia (1917–2011) is presented, grouped in three main research interests – plant embryology, cytogenetics in plants and cytological terminology – plus other less relevant contributions. Abstract

Soil microfungi in homogeneous areas of three plant communities of North Italy.—The soil microfungi associated with three different community types in Prealpine region of North Italy were investigated. Frequency values for the taxonomic entities isolated were calculated, based on occurrence at sampling sites, in each community. Most of the entities were quantitatively rare. The microfungal communities associated with Acer pseudoplatanus and Fraxinus excelsior, with Ostrya carpinifolia and with Fagus sylvatica appeared to be a distinctive group, even if many of them contained a substantial number of species wich are common with other vegetation types.  相似文献

Within an integrated management plan for contaminated site remediation at a given territorial scale, the performance of treatability tests could be useful and/or expressly requested by the control authority on a site-specific basis to evaluate the overall feasibility of a given remedial option. The thermal desorption process appears to be a favorable treatment technology for organic contaminants. In this context, a particular lab-scale, indirectly heated desorber for treatability tests was originally developed and first applied to natural soils with different textures (silty sand, loam, silt clay, and clayey silt) that were “ad hoc” highly contaminated with diesel oil at various desorption process conditions (heating temperature in the range of 300–390°C, and reactor retention time in the range of 40–120 min). The Italian soil threshold level for heavy hydrocarbons (C > 12) of 50 mg kg?1 (dry matter) was assumed to be the successful goal of the treatability studies. In addition to the individuation of the favorable desorption process conditions for each soil, also in terms of a composite evaluation of heating temperature and retention time, the comparative experimental results provided useful indications of the possible influence of soil texture, the reduction of initial soil organic matter, and the evaluation of kinetic rate constants.  相似文献

In the course of evolution, the genomes of grasses have maintained an observable degree of gene order conservation. The information available for already sequenced genomes can be used to predict the gene order of nonsequenced species by means of comparative colinearity studies. The “Wheat Zapper” application presented here performs on-demand colinearity analysis between wheat, rice, Sorghum, and Brachypodium in a simple, time efficient, and flexible manner. This application was specifically designed to provide plant scientists with a set of tools, comprising not only synteny inference, but also automated primer design, intron/exon boundaries prediction, visual representation using the graphic tool Circos 0.53, and the possibility of downloading FASTA sequences for downstream applications. Quality of the “Wheat Zapper” prediction was confirmed against the genome of maize, with good correlation (r?>?0.83) observed between the gene order predicted on the basis of synteny and their actual position on the genome. Further, the accuracy of “Wheat Zapper” was calculated at 0.65 considering the “Genome Zipper” application as the “gold” standard. The differences between these two tools are amply discussed, making the point that “Wheat Zapper” is an accurate and reliable on-demand tool that is sure to benefit the cereal scientific community. Amniotic fluid is in continuity with multiple developing organ systems, including the kidney. Committed, but still stem-like cells from these organs may thus appear in amniotic fluid. We report having established for the first time a stem-like cell population derived from human amniotic fluid and possessing characteristics of podocyte precursors. Using a method of triple positive selection we obtained a population of cells (hAKPC-P) that can be propagated in vitro for many passages without immortalization or genetic manipulation. Under specific culture conditions, these cells can be differentiated to mature podocytes. In this work we compared these cells with conditionally immortalized podocytes, the current gold standard for in vitro studies. After in vitro differentiation, both cell lines have similar expression of the major podocyte proteins, such as nephrin and type IV collagen, that are characteristic of mature functional podocytes. In addition, differentiated hAKPC-P respond to angiotensin II and the podocyte toxin, puromycin aminonucleoside, in a way typical of podocytes. In contrast to immortalized cells, hAKPC-P have a more nearly normal cell cycle regulation and a pronounced developmental pattern of specific protein expression, suggesting their suitability for studies of podocyte development for the first time in vitro. These novel progenitor cells appear to have several distinct advantages for studies of podocyte cell biology and potentially for translational therapies.  相似文献

The mammalian circadian system is composed of a light-entrainable central clock in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the brain and peripheral clocks in virtually any other tissue. It allows the organism to optimally adjust metabolic, physiological and behavioral functions to the physiological needs it will have at specific time of the day. According to the resonance theory, such rhythms are only advantageous to an organism when in tune with the environment, which is illustrated by the adverse health effects originating from chronic circadian disruption by jetlag and shift work. Using short-period Cry1 and long-period Cry2 deficient mice as models for morningness and eveningness, respectively, we explored the effect of chronotype on the phase relationship between the central SCN clock and peripheral clocks in other organs. Whereas the behavioral activity patterns and circadian gene expression in the SCN of light-entrained Cry1-/- and Cry2-/- mice largely overlapped with that of wild type mice, expression of clock and clock controlled genes in liver, kidney, small intestine, and skin was shown to be markedly phase-advanced or phase-delayed, respectively. Likewise, circadian rhythms in urinary corticosterone were shown to display a significantly altered phase relationship similar to that of gene expression in peripheral tissues. We show that the daily dissonance between peripheral clocks and the environment did not affect the lifespan of Cry1-/- or Cry2-/- mice. Nonetheless, the phase-shifted peripheral clocks in light-entrained mice with morningness and eveningness-like phenotypes may have implications for personalized preventive and therapeutic (i.e. chronomodulation-based) health care for people with early and late chronotypes.  相似文献

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy has become an essential tool for treating a range of brain disorders. In the resting state, DBS is known to regularize spike activity in and downstream of the stimulated brain target, which in turn has been hypothesized to create informational lesions. Here, we specifically test this hypothesis using repetitive joint articulations in two non-human Primates while recording single-unit activity in the sensorimotor globus pallidus and motor thalamus before, during, and after DBS in the globus pallidus (GP) GP-DBS resulted in: (1) stimulus-entrained firing patterns in globus pallidus, (2) a monophasic stimulus-entrained firing pattern in motor thalamus, and (3) a complete or partial loss of responsiveness to joint position, velocity, or acceleration in globus pallidus (75%, 12/16 cells) and in the pallidal receiving area of motor thalamus (ventralis lateralis pars oralis, VLo) (38%, 21/55 cells). Despite loss of kinematic tuning, cells in the globus pallidus (63%, 10/16 cells) and VLo (84%, 46/55 cells) still responded to one or more aspects of joint movement during GP-DBS. Further, modulated kinematic tuning did not always necessitate modulation in firing patterns (2/12 cells in globus pallidus; 13/23 cells in VLo), and regularized firing patterns did not always correspond to altered responses to joint articulation (3/4 cells in globus pallidus, 11/33 cells in VLo). In this context, DBS therapy appears to function as an amalgam of network modulating and network lesioning therapies.  相似文献
