Effect of oxygen and air flow on xylanolytic and cellulolytic activity from bacterial cultures grown on bagasse pith

D-xylo and Lyxofuranonucleosides Reviewed: Some Suggestions on The Mechanism of Activity of Antiviral Nucleosides

Abstract

D-Xylo and Lyxofuranonucleosides have not been extensively studied. Therefore in order to perform a systematic Structure-Antiviral Activity Relationship of the nucleoside analogs we have first synthesized their α and β anomers, some of them being unknown or their structure doubtful in the literature.     

Gas exchange and resource-use patterns along a Mediterranean successional gradient

Abstract. Gas exchange, leaf-nitrogen concentration and water potential were measured in early and late spring in early successional herbaceous plants occurring after cutting and after fire, and in mature woody species from the Mediterranean climax community Quercetum ilicis in central Italy. Net photosynthesis peaked in early spring in all species studied when values for temperature and light were lower but leaf-nitrogen content was higher as compared to late spring, suggesting that nitrogen more than energy input controlled photosynt-hetic rates. Herbaceous pioneer species occurring after cutting showed higher field photo synthetic capacity than evergreen climax trees and shrubs. By contrast, net photosynthesis of herbaceous species occurring in a persistent stage after fire, was in the same range as that of climax trees. This evidence suggests that carbon-gaining appears to be partly related to the dynamic stage of succession and not solely to the growth form.     

Study of the binding of jatrophone to Escherichia coli s-ribonucleic acid

The interaction of jatrophone with sRNA from Escherichia coli has been investigated through UV, CD, and 1H NMR measurements. The results obtained show that the interaction with jatrophone increases the stability of the polynucleotide. It appears that the optical properties of jatrophone depend upon the jatrophone/nucleotide ratio. The observed behaviour can only be explained by the existence of different types of interaction between jatrophone and sRNA. Even for a jatrophone/nucleotide ratio as low as 0.17 the 1H NMR spectra show a multiplicity of resonances that can only be explained by the simultaneous existence of two different binding modes involving the jatrophone molecules.     

Free amino acids from pollens

Pollens from Pinus canariensis, P. nigra, P. pinaster, P. pinea, Castanea sativa, Magnolia grandiflora, Olea sativa cv frantoio, cv itrana, cv pisciottana were examined for their free amino acid composition. A large amount of proline was found in all species; pollens of Olea also contain a large amount of serine.     

Inhibition of cardiolipin synthesis by end-products and other complex lipids in membrane preparations of Micrococcus lysodeikticus.

Using membrane preparations of Micrococcus lysodeikticus, the end-products of cardiolipin synthesis, cardiolipin and glycerol, were shown to inhibit cardiolipin synthetase at several concentrations. Other phospholipids tested for inhibitory effects, phosphatidyl-ethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidic acid were also shown to inhibit cardiolipin synthesis. Phosphatidic acid was considerably more inhibitory than cardiolipin, phosphatidylethanolamine was similar to cardiolipin, and phosphatidylinositol less inhibitory at the same concentrations. A non-phosphate-containing glycolipid was also inhibitory. In contrast, glycerophosphate had no effect on cardiolipin synthesis.
