Larvae of the parasitic wasp family Figitidae develop as internal parasitoids of other endopterygote insect larvae. The hosts are typically dipteran larvae living in other microhabitats but the earliest figitids probably attacked gall-inhabiting hymenopteran larvae. Here, we formally describe a new genus (Parnips) and subfamily (Parnipinae) for a species that is likely to be a surviving representative of these early gall-associated figitids. The species, P. nigripes , has been reared repeatedly from galls inside the seed capsules of annual poppies (Papaver dubium and P. rhoeas) in the Mediterranean region together with the gall inducer Barbotinia oraniensis belonging to the Cynipidae, the sister group of Figitidae. Parnips nigripes is strikingly cynipid-like and was first assumed to be a cynipid gall inducer of the genus Aulacidea. Phylogenetic analyses have since indicated that the similarity with the Cynipidae is symplesiomorphic and that P. nigripes belongs to the Figitidae, where it forms the sister group of all other extant figitids. Recently, it has also been shown that P. nigripes is a parasitoid of the gall-inducing Barbotinia oraniensis , consistent with its proposed phylogenetic position. Parnips nigripes shares several unusual morphological traits with its host. We speculate that many of these similarities are homologous even though the lineages separated at least 83 million years ago.  相似文献

The genus Sige Malmgren, 1865 is revised and the type species S.fusigera Malmgren, 1865, redescribed from syntypes and newly collected topotype material. Based on examination of type specimens, six species described from other genera are transferred to Sige: Pirakia brunnea Fauchald, 1972; Vitiazia dogieli Ushakov, 1953; Eulalia longocirrata Stop-Bowitz, 1948; Eumida (Eumidaj parvicirrus Perkins, 1984; Eulalia sandwichensis Ushakov, 1975; Eulalia sigeformis Annekova, 1937. The genus Vitiazia Ushakov, 1953, being monotypic, becomes a junior synonym to Sige. Pirakia lanceolata Hartman & Fauchald, 1971 is synonymized with Sige longocirrata (Støp-Bowitz, 1948) and Sige oliveri sp. nov. is described from western Norway and Sweden. Ten species are recognized as belonging to Sige . The relationships of Sige to other genera are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract: Population viability analysis (PVA) is a common tool to evaluate population vulnerability. However, most techniques require reliable estimates of underlying population parameters, which are often difficult to obtain and PVA are, therefore, best used in a qualitative context. Logistic regression is a powerful alternative to traditional PVA methods but has received surprisingly limited attention. Logistic regression fits regression equations to binary output from PVA models at a specific point in time to predict probability of a binary response over a range of parameter values. We used logistic regression on output from stochastic population models to evaluate the relative importance of demographic parameters for wolverine (Gulo gulo) populations and to estimate sustainable harvest in a wolverine population in Alaska. Our analysis indicated that adult survival is the most important demographic parameter to reliably estimate in wolverine populations because it had a greater effect on population persistence than did both fecundity and subadult survival. In accordance with this, harvest rate had a greater effect on population persistence than did any of the other harvest- and migration-related variables we tested. Furthermore, a high proportion of harvested females strengthened the effect of harvest. Hypothetical wolverine populations suffered high probabilities of both extinction and population decline over a range of realistic population sizes and harvest regimes. We suggest that harvested wolverine populations must be regarded as sink populations and that source populations in combination with sufficient dispersal corridors must be secured for any wolverine harvest to be sustainable.  相似文献

In hybrid zones genetically differentiated populations meet and interbreed. As they result from ongoing divergence and potential speciation, such zones provide opportunities to study how different factors affect this process. One well-known avian hybrid zone is that between the Hooded Crow Corvus corone cornix and Carrion Crow C. c. corone , which extends throughout much of Europe. We compare the current position and width of the zone in southern Denmark and northern Germany with that described in detail by Meise in 1928. A GPS technique was used to determine the geographical position of more than 1000 Crows in established pairs in which all individuals were classified as either Carrion, Hooded or hybrid phenotype. The data show that the Carrion Crow has expanded northwards and that this is most pronounced at the eastern side of the study area. Here the hybrid zone has moved around 19 km. However, the width of the zone seems to have remained stable over time. Possible reasons for why the zone may have moved are discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the phylogeny of butterflies in the tribe Nymphalini sensu Harvey 1991, comprising the genera Vanessa, Cynthia, Bassaris, Aglais, Inachis, Nymphalis, Polygonia, Kaniska, Antanartia, Hypanartia, Symbrenthia, Mynes and Araschnia . Evidence from the mitochondrial gene ndl, the nuclear gene 'wingless' and from morphology/ ecology/behaviour were used separately and combined to analyse relationships. Phylogenies based on the different types of data agreed in many aspects of basic topology. We show that an analysis of only wing pattern characters (based on Nijhout's homology system) results in a topology broadly similar to the one resulting from analysis of the complete matrix. We found support for a monophyletic Nymphalini, where Hypanartia may be the sister clade to all other genera. Mynes, Symbrenthia and Araschnia together seem to form another basal clade. Evidence presented gives only moderate support for a monophyletic Vanessa in the wide sense, including also Cynthia and Bassaris , but strong support for the monophyly of the largely holarctic clade Aglais + Inachis + Nymphalis + Polygonia + Kaniska + Roddia . Within the latter group there is strong support for a clade consisting of Aglais + Inachis and for a second clade which includes Nymphalis, Polygonia (and its sister clade, the monotypic Kaniska) as well as Roddia l-album (= Nymphalis vaualbum ). As a consequence of this topology, Aglais is recognized as a taxon separate from Nymphalis . We present a hypothesis of species relationships within the focal group of genera. We also analyse and discuss the implications of excluding or including ecological data in phylogenetic tree construction, when the tree is to be used for studies in phylogenetic ecology.  相似文献

A core drilling (Andrarum‐3), from the classical locality at Andrarum, Scania, southernmost Sweden, penetrated a 28.90‐m‐thick Cambrian succession. The core comprises dark grey to black, finely laminated mudstones and shales with early concretionary carbonate lenses (stinkstones or orsten) and a few primary carbonate beds. The middle Cambrian (provisional Series 3) part of the core comprises 17.35 m, whereas the Furongian Series (upper Cambrian) part covers the remaining 11.55 m. Nineteen trilobite and two phosphatocopine genera are present in the middle Cambrian, whereas the less diverse Furongian interval yielded four trilobite and three phosphatocopine genera. Other, less frequent, faunal elements include conodonts (s. l.), brachiopods, sponge spicules, bradoriids, and coprolites. Trilobites and phosphatocopines were used to subdivide the core into seven biozones ranging from the Ptychagnostus atavus Zone to the Parabolina spinulosa Zone (P. spinulosa Subzone). Carbon isotopic analyses (δ13Corg) through the core show two important excursions, the negative DrumIan Carbon isotope Excursion (DICE) in the Pt. atavus Zone, and the Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE) beginning near the first appearance of Glyptagnostus reticulatus and extending upward into the Olenus and Agnostus (Homagnostus) obesus Zone. The DICE displays a peak value, in the samples at hand, of –30.45‰δ13Corg in the lower part of the P. atavus Zone. The δ13Corg values increase through the overlying L. laevigata and A. pisiformis zones and display peak values of c. –28.00‰δ13Corg in the lowermost Furongian Olenus wahlenbergi and O. attenuatus subzones. Thereafter the values decrease significantly through the O. scanicus Subzone. Both isotopic excursions have been documented from several palaeocontinents, but never before from Baltica. Moreover, for the first time these excursions are recorded from organic matter in an alum shale setting. The recorded shift of +1.50–2.00‰δ13Corg is approximately half the magnitude of the SPICE documented from other regions. This discrepancy may be related to temporal variations in the type, origin, or diagenesis of the organic fraction analysed.  相似文献

We redescribe the South American genus Acanthaegilips Ashmead, 1897 and discuss its phylogenetic position within the Figitidae (sensu lata). The genus was originally placed in the Anacharitinae but shows affinities with both the Anacharitinae and the Aspiceratinae in the characters used currendy to separate figitid subfamilies. In a recent revision of the higher‐level classification of cynipoids, Acanthaegilips was separated from the remainder of the Anacharitinae and placed in a monotypic higher‐level taxon. We analyse the morphological differences between die Anacharitinae and Aspiceratinae and their bearing on the monophyly of the two subfamilies and the placement of Acanthaegilips. We conclude that, after removal of Seitneria and Paraegilips from the Anacharitinae, both subfamilies are well defined monophyletic groups and that Acanthaegilips belongs to the Anacharitinae, within which it forms a monophyletic group together with the South American genera Calofigites Kieffer, 1909 and Solenofigites Diaz, 1979.  相似文献

The all black carrion crow ( Corvus corone corone ) and the grey and black hooded crow ( Corvus   corone cornix ) meet in a narrow hybrid zone across Europe. To evaluate the degree of genetic differentiation over the hybrid zone, we genotyped crows from the centre and edges of the zone, and from allopatric populations in northern (Scotland–Denmark–Sweden) and southern Europe (western–central northern Italy), at 18 microsatellites and at a plumage candidate gene, the MC1R gene. Allopatric and edge populations were significantly differentiated on microsatellites, and populations were isolated by distance over the hybrid zone in Italy. Single-locus analyses showed that one locus, CmeH9, differentiated populations on different sides of the zone at the same time as showing only weak separation of populations on the same side of the zone. Within the hybrid zone there was no differentiation of phenotypes at CmeH9 or at the set of microsatellites, no excess of heterozygotes among hybrids and low levels of linkage disequilibrium between markers. We did not detect any association between phenotypes and nucleotide variation at MC1R , and the two most common haplotypes occurred in very similar frequencies in carrion and hooded crows. That we found a similar degree of genetic differentiation between allopatric and edge populations irrespectively of their location in relation to the hybrid zone, no differentiation between phenotypes within the hybrid zone, and neither heterozygote excess nor consistent linkage disequilibrium in the hybrid zone, is striking considering that carrion and hooded crows are phenotypically distinct and sometimes recognised as separate species.  相似文献
