The house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus), as a successful invasive species worldwide, has to forage a variety of resources. Subantarctic mice display among the most notable diet shift from the usual omnivorous–granivorous diet, relying on a larger proportion of terrestrial animal prey. In agreement, a recent study of their mandible morphology evidenced an evolution of their mandible shape to optimize incisor biting and hence seize preys. Here, the incisors themselves are the focus of a morphometric analysis combined with a 3D study of their internal structure, aiming at a comparison between subantarctic populations (Guillou island, Kerguelen archipelago) with a range of western European continental, commensal mice. The predatory foraging behavior of Guillou mice was indeed associated with a sharper bevel of the lower incisor, which appears as an efficient morphology for piercing prey. The incisor of these mice also displays a reduced pulp cavity, suggesting slower eruption counterbalancing a reduced abrasion on such soft food material. The dynamics of the ever‐growing incisor may thus allow adaptive incisor sculpting and participate to the success of mice in foraging diverse resources.  相似文献

Material and energy flows among ecosystems can directly and indirectly drive ecosystem functions. Yet, how populations of consumers respond to allochthonous inputs at a macroecological scale is still unclear. Using a meta‐analysis spanning several biomes, we show that the abundance of recipient populations is 36–57% larger with increased allochthonous inputs. The strength of direct effects on the recipients of these inputs as well as the indirect effects on the consumers of these recipients (i.e. ascending indirect effects) are constant across a latitudinal gradient spanning subtropical, arid, temperate, boreal and arctic ecosystems. However, indirect effect on the in situ resources of the input recipient (i.e. descending indirect effects) decreases with latitude. Our results suggest that the influence of allochthonous inputs can vary across large‐scale gradients of ecosystem productivity and may be driven by the types of trophic interactions within recipient food webs.  相似文献

Throughout the hypothalamus there are several regions known to contain sex differences in specific cellular, neurochemical, or cell grouping characteristics. The current study examined the potential origin of sex differences in calbindin expression in the preoptic area and hypothalamus as related to sources of nitric oxide. Specific cell populations were defined by immunoreactive (ir) calbindin and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus (POA/AH), anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPv), and ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN). The POA/AH of adult mice was characterized by a striking sex difference in the distribution of cells with ir-calbindin. Examination of the POA/AH of androgen receptor deficient Tfm mice suggests that this pattern was in part androgen receptor dependent, since Tfm males had reduced ir-calbindin compared with wild-type males and more similar to wild-type females. At P0 ir-calbindin was more prevalent than in adulthood, with males having significantly more ir-calbindin and nNOS than have females. Cells that contained either ir-calbindin or ir-nNOS in the POA/AH were in adjacent cell groups, suggesting that NO derived from the enzymatic activity of nNOS may influence the development of ir-calbindin cells. In the region of AVPv, at P0, there was a sex difference with males having more ir-nNOS fibers than have females while ir-calbindin was not detected. In the VMN, at P0, ir-nNOS was greater in females than in males, with no significant difference in ir-calbindin. We suggest that NO as an effector molecule and calbindin as a molecular biomarker illuminate key aspects of sexual differentiation in the developing mouse brain.  相似文献

We analyzed data on multilocus sequence typing (MLST), ABC typing, mating type-like locus (MAT) status, and antifungal susceptibility for a panel of 1,391 Candida albicans isolates. Almost all (96.7%) of the isolates could be assigned by MLST to one of 17 clades. eBURST analysis revealed 53 clonal clusters. Diploid sequence type 69 was the most common MLST strain type and the founder of the largest clonal cluster, and examples were found among isolates from all parts of the world. ABC types and geographical origins showed statistically significant variations among clades by univariate analysis of variance, but anatomical source and antifungal susceptibility data were not significantly associated. A separate analysis limited to European isolates, thereby minimizing geographical effects, showed significant differences in the proportions of isolates from blood, commensal carriage, and superficial infections among the five most populous clades. The proportion of isolates with low antifungal susceptibility was highest for MAT homozygous a/a types and then alpha/alpha types and was lowest for heterozygous a/alpha types. The tree of clades defined by MLST was not congruent with trees generated from the individual gene fragments sequenced, implying a separate evolutionary history for each fragment. Analysis of nucleic acid variation among loci and within loci supported recombination. Computational haplotype analysis showed a high frequency of recombination events, suggesting that isolates had mixed evolutionary histories resembling those of a sexually reproducing species.  相似文献

Erythroid spectrin is the main component of the red cell membrane skeleton, which is very important in determining the shape, resistance to mechanical stresses and deformability of red cells. Previously we demonstrated that human erythroid alpha-spectrin is ubiquitinated in vitro and in vivo, and using recombinant peptides we identified on repeat 17 the main ubiquitination site of alpha-spectrin. In order to identify the lysine(s) involved in the ubiquitination process, in the present study we mutated the lysines by site-directed mutagenesis. We found that ubiquitination was dramatically inhibited in peptides carrying the mutation of lysine 27 on repeat 17 (mutants K25,27R and K27R). We also demonstrated that the correct folding of this protein is fundamental for its recognition by the ubiquitin conjugating system. Furthermore, the region flanking lysine 27 showed a 75% similarity with the leucine zipper pattern present in many regulatory proteins. Thus, a new potential ubiquitin recognition motif was identified in alpha-spectrin and may be present in several other proteins.  相似文献

The backbone dynamics in the native state of apocytochrome b5 were studied using 15N nuclear magnetic spin relaxation measurements. The field (11.7 and 14.1 T) and temperature (10-25 degrees C) dependence of the relaxation parameters (R1, R2, and R1rho) and the 1H-15N NOE established that the protein undergoes multiple time scale internal motions related to the secondary structure. The relaxation data were analyzed with the reduced spectral density mapping approach and within the extended model-free framework. The apoprotein was confirmed to contain a disordered heme-binding loop of approximately 30 residues with dynamics on the sub-nanosecond time scale (0.6 < S2 < 0.7, 100 ps < taue < 500 ps). This loop is attached to a structured hydrophobic core, rigid on the picosecond time scale (S2 > 0.75, taue < 50 ps). The inability to fit the data for several residues with the model-free protocol revealed the presence of correlated motion. An exchange contribution was detected in the transverse relaxation rate (R2) of all residues. The differential temperature response of R2 along the backbone supported slower exchange rates for residues in the loop (tauex > 300 micros) than for the folded polypeptide chain (tauex < 150 micros). The distribution of the reduced spectral densities at the 1H and 15N frequencies followed the dynamic trend and predicted the slowing of the internal motions at 10 degrees C. Comparison of the dynamics with those of the holoprotein [Dangi, B., Sarma, S., Yan, C., Banville, D. L., and Guiles, R. D. (1998) Biochemistry 37, 8289-8302] demonstrated that binding of the heme alters the time scale of motions both in the heme-binding loop and in the structured hydrophobic core.  相似文献
