School children are core groups in the transmission of many common infectious diseases, and are likely to play a key role in the spatial dispersal of disease across multiple scales. However, there is currently little detailed information about the spatial movements of this epidemiologically important age group. To address this knowledge gap, we collaborated with eight secondary schools to conduct a survey of movement patterns of school pupils in primary and secondary schools in the United Kingdom. We found evidence of a significant change in behaviour between term time and holidays, with term time weekdays characterised by predominately local movements, and holidays seeing much broader variation in travel patterns. Studies that use mathematical models to examine epidemic transmission and control often use adult commuting data as a proxy for population movements. We show that while these data share some features with the movement patterns reported by school children, there are some crucial differences between the movements of children and adult commuters during both term-time and holidays. 相似文献

Structural mapping of protein interactions reveals differences in evolutionary pressures correlated to mRNA level and protein abundance 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Genome-wide studies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae concluded that the dominant determinant of protein evolutionary rates is expression level: highly expressed proteins generally evolve most slowly. To determine how this constraint affects the evolution of protein interactions, we directly measure evolutionary rates of protein interface, surface, and core residues by structurally mapping domain interactions to yeast genomes. We find that mRNA level and protein abundance, though correlated, report on pressures affecting regions of proteins differently. Pressures proportional to mRNA level slow evolutionary rates of all structural regions and reduce the variability in rate differences between interfaces and other surfaces. In contrast, the evolutionary rate variation within a domain is much less correlated to protein abundance. Distinct pressures may be associated primarily with the cost (mRNA level) and functional (protein abundance) benefit of protein production. Interfaces of proteins with low mRNA levels may have higher evolutionary flexibility and could constitute the raw material for new functions. 相似文献

The putative intermediate dienol (2) in the steroid isomerase (KSI) catalyzed conversion of 5-androstene-3,17-dione (1) to 4-androstene-3,17-dione (3) has been independently generated and tested as a substrate for KSI. At pH 7, dienol 2 is converted by KSI to a mixture of 1 (46%) and 3 (54%). The apparent second-order rate constant for reaction of 2 with KSI to produce 3 (kappa cat/Km = 2.3 x 10(8) M-1 s-1) is similar to that for reaction of 1 with KSI (kappa cat/Km = 2.1 x 10(8) M-1 s-1), demonstrating that 2 is kinetically competent. Isomerization of 1 by KSI in D2O gives only 5% of solvent deuterium incorporated into the product 3. When 2 reacts with KSI in D2O, and the product 3 is isolated (from direct reaction of 2 and from subsequent conversion of the 1 initially formed), ca. 80 atom % deuterium is located at C-6 beta, confirming that protonation of the dienol by KSI occurs at the same face as the proton transfer in the KSI catalyzed reaction of 1 to 3. 相似文献

In northeastern Illinois, restored wetlands are used to improve water quality in streams degraded by agriculture and urban development. Using freshwater wetlands to reduce nitrogen loading to lakes and rivers is well documented; however, there are fewer studies addressing their use to remove phosphorous. In 1998, a systematic water quality monitoring project was begun at Prairie Wolf Slough Wetland Demonstration Project, a restored palustrine emergent marsh wetland located on an abandoned farm field north of Chicago. The wetland drains 98 ha of mixed land uses into the Chicago River. Our objectives were to assess spatial and temporal variations in total suspended solids, soluble reactive and total phosphorous concentrations, and mass loadings and compute a mass balance and retention efficiency for these constituents. Water sampling was conducted from 1998 to 2003. In 2004, soil samples were collected from the marsh and an adjacent abandoned farm site and analyzed for soil test (Bray) phosphorus. The marsh effectively traps suspended solids but acts as a source of soluble reactive and total phosphorous to the river both during the growing and nongrowing seasons. Net export of phosphorous from the wetland was likely due to mobilization of orthophosphate as a result of anoxic conditions produced during inundation events. Often little consideration is given to the link between soil and water quality when locating restoration sites. Our study adds to a growing body of literature that clearly demonstrates the need for both soil and water quality assessments in wetland restoration planning, design, and monitoring. 相似文献

Internet-based systems for epidemiological studies have advantages over traditional approaches as they can potentially recruit and monitor a wider range of individuals in a relatively inexpensive fashion. We studied the association between communication strategies used for recruitment (offline, online, face-to-face) and follow-up participation in nine Internet-based cohorts: the Influenzanet network of platforms for influenza surveillance which includes seven cohorts in seven different European countries, the Italian birth cohort Ninfea and the New Zealand birth cohort ELF. Follow-up participation varied from 43% to 89% depending on the cohort. Although there were heterogeneities among studies, participants who became aware of the study through an online communication campaign compared with those through traditional offline media seemed to have a lower follow-up participation in 8 out of 9 cohorts. There were no clear differences in participation between participants enrolled face-to-face and those enrolled through other offline strategies. An Internet-based campaign for Internet-based epidemiological studies seems to be less effective than an offline one in enrolling volunteers who keep participating in follow-up questionnaires. This suggests that even for Internet-based epidemiological studies an offline enrollment campaign would be helpful in order to achieve a higher participation proportion and limit the cohort attrition. 相似文献

Neural crest mesenchyme (NCM) controls species-specific pattern in the craniofacial skeleton but how this cell population accomplishes such a complex task remains unclear. To elucidate mechanisms through which NCM directs skeletal development and evolution, we made chimeras from quail and duck embryos, which differ markedly in their craniofacial morphology and maturation rates. We show that quail NCM, when transplanted into duck, maintains its faster timetable for development and autonomously executes molecular and cellular programs for the induction, differentiation, and mineralization of bone, including premature expression of osteogenic genes such as Runx2 and Col1a1. In contrast, the duck host systemic environment appears to be relatively permissive and supports osteogenesis independently by providing circulating minerals and a vascular network. Further experiments reveal that NCM establishes the timing of osteogenesis by regulating cell cycle progression in a stage- and species-specific manner. Altering the time-course of D-type cyclin expression mimics chimeras by accelerating expression of Runx2 and Col1a1. We also discover higher endogenous expression of Runx2 in quail coincident with their smaller craniofacial skeletons, and by prematurely over-expressing Runx2 in chick embryos we reduce the overall size of the craniofacial skeleton. Thus, our work indicates that NCM establishes species-specific size in the craniofacial skeleton by controlling cell cycle, Runx2 expression, and the timing of key events during osteogenesis. 相似文献
