The sulfated, methylated galactan isolated from the red seaweed Bostrychia montagnei, showed an unusually narrow structural dispersion. This agaran has the defining linear backbone of alternating 3-linked beta-D-galactopyranosyl units and 4-linked alpha-L-galactopyranosyl and 3,6-anhydrogalactopyranosyl residues. The D-units have C-6 methylation, C-6 single stubs of xylopyranosyl and minor to trace amounts of (possible) C-6 linked single stubs of galactopyranosyl. These units are mainly sulfated on C-4 with lesser sulfation at C-6 and minor at C-2. The L-residues are mainly methylated on C-2 of the 3,6-anhydrogalactopyranosyl and sulfated on C-3 of the L-galactopyranosyl; minor amounts of 2,3- and 3,6-disulfated and 2-O-methyl or 2-O-glycosyl 3-sulfated L-galactopyranosyl were also found. 相似文献

The armored catfish Hypostomus affinis is a widespread Loricariidae fish in the Lajes Reservoir (22 degrees 42'-22 degrees 50' S; 43 degrees 53'-44 degrees 05' W), the largest lentic environment in the Rio de Janeiro State, but little is known about their reproductive biology. One hundred and twenty five females, captured from January 1996 to December 1997, were used to assess ovarian development (29 were used to determine fecundity). The oocyte distribution by size-diameter classes revealed the occurrence of two modes suggesting an asynchronic development of the ovaries. The total fecundity ranged from 1235 to 4304, averaging 2374. An exponential relationship between fecundity and total length was determined, and a direct linear relationship was found between fecundity and total weight and gonad weight. 相似文献

We studied 11 new kindreds with primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease (PPNAD) or Carney complex (CNC) and found that 82% of the kindreds had PRKAR1A gene defects (including seven novel inactivating mutations), most of which led to nonsense mRNA and, thus, were not expressed in patients' cells. However, a previously undescribed base substitution in intron 6 (exon 6 IVS +1G-->T) led to exon 6 skipping and an expressed shorter PRKAR1A protein. The mutant protein was present in patients' leukocytes and tumors, and in vitro studies indicated that the mutant PRKAR1A activated cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) signaling at the nuclear level. This is the first demonstration of an inactivating PRKAR1A mutation being expressed at the protein level and leading to stimulation of the PKA pathway in CNC patients. Along with the lack of allelic loss at the PRKAR1A locus in most of the tumors from this kindred, these data suggest that alteration of PRKAR1A function (not only its complete loss) is sufficient for augmenting PKA activity leading to tumorigenesis in tissues affected by CNC. 相似文献

Introduced exotic species cause environmental changes and threat public health in target sites. Illegal trade has enhanced this problem. To first report these risks in Brazil, exotic snakes found in São Paulo City (SPC) (23°32 S, 46°38 W), southeastern Brazil, and sent to Instituto Butantan between 1995 and 2000, were listed and characterized by their biological attributes. Seventy-six individuals of sixteen alien species were collected. Euriecians snakes, mainly booids, were predominant. Using multivariate techniques, their ecological niches were compared to those of 26 native species, as a way to point out the resource's availability. To evaluate the potential of successful implantation, two species absent in SPC and considered as problem snakes are included in these analyses: the brown treesnake Boiga irregularis and the habu Trimeresurus flavoviridis. There were niche similarities between these pest snakes, exotic booids and native viperids largely due to the similarities in the chosen prey (mammals), diel activity (nocturnal), color pattern (variegated) and body size (medium to large). Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCYC 1190 cells accumulated (after 1 h) lead and cadmium at similar levels, and to a lesser degree also copper. During heavy metal accumulation, there was a considerable loss of viability of copper-treated cells (about 99% in the first 20 min of contact with the metal), and a less pronounced lethal effect on cadmium- and lead-treated cells (about 66% and 46% after 1 h of contact with cadmium or lead, respectively) was detected. During copper accumulation, a leakage of UV-absorbing compounds and inorganic phosphate was observed; this did not occur with lead, whereas with cadmium a small amount of leakage of inorganic phosphate was detected. The filtrates of copper-treated cells contained copper-binding molecules. The copper-binding capacity of the filtrates increased with time according to the release of inorganic phosphate and UV-absorbing compounds. These compounds can bind an appreciable quantity of metal ions, making them unavailable for cell uptake and thus reducing the efficiency of heavy metals removal by yeast cells. 相似文献

Yeast species in the genus Malassezia are lipophilic with the exception of Malassezia pachydermatis. During a study of the occurrence of Malassezia species in the external ear of 964 cattle and 6 dogs in Minas Gerais, Brazil, six lipid-dependent isolates could not be identified to known species. Four isolates came from healthy cows, one from a cow with otitis, and one from a healthy dog. When tested with Tweens and Cremophor EL as single sources of lipids, the strains grew on all sources except Cremophor EL. None of the six strains hydrolyzed esculin, and all produced catalase. Pigment production from tryptophan was variable. Partial large subunit rRNA sequences were obtained for two isolates that remained viable in culture. The strain from the cow with otitis was identified as a lipid-dependent variant of M. pachydermatis, and the strain from the dog was an atypical variant of Malassezia furfur. 相似文献

The analyses of the ectoparasite species associated with a small mammal community on Ilha Grande, a coastal island in southern of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, evaluated the level of host-ectoparasite specificity. Was used the Jaccard index for qualitative data to analyse the similarity. The lowest value of similarity occurred between Proechimys iheringi and Marmosops incanus and between Sciurus aestuans and Nectomys squamipes (Cj=0.08) and the highest between P. iheringi and Oxymycterus sp. (Cj=0.33). This index showed a low value of similarity across the ectoparasite community. The only exception from this pattern of high host specificity occurred with P. iheringi and Oxymycterus sp., which shared five species of ectoparasites. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis was applied to DNAs extracted from Trichuris trichiura eggs recovered from human fecal samples. Four out of 6 primers tested displayed 18 distinct and well defined polymorphic patterns, ranging from 650 to 3200 base pairs. These results, upon retrieval and DNA sequencing of some of these bands from agarose gels, might help in establishing. Experiments were performed for adsorption of milk-based substrates onto anaerobic biomass at 35 degrees C. The influence of two parameters was studied, namely, the type of biomass (flocculent or granular) and the sludge adaptation to the substrate. It was found that flocculent sludge presented an adsorption capacity roughly 3 times higher than that of granular sludge. The adsorption data fit well with the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Apparently, short-term sludge adaptation is not influential on the adsorption behavior. On the other hand, long-term adapted sludge showed a higher adsorption capacity than nonadapted sludge, which probably is an indirect effect of different microbial populations. These results suggest that the role of adsorption in the anaerobic treatment of complex substrates containing fat cannot be overlooked, especially for flocculent sludge systems, since organic matter accumulation could cause process failure due to biomass washout. 相似文献
