Evolutionary divergence in behavioural traits related to mating may represent the initial stage of speciation. Direct selective forces are usually invoked to explain divergence in mate‐recognition traits, often neglecting a role for neutral processes or concomitant differentiation in ecological traits. We adopted a multi‐trait approach to obtain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind allopatric divergence in the Amazonian frog, Allobates femoralis. We tested the null hypothesis that geographic distance between populations correlates with genetic and phenotypic divergence, and compared divergence between mate‐recognition (acoustic) and ecological (coloration, body‐shape) traits. We quantified geographic variation in 39 phenotypic traits and a mitochondrial DNA marker among 125 individuals representing eight populations. Geographic variation in acoustic traits was pronounced and tracked the spatial genetic variation, which appeared to be neutral. Thus, the evolution of acoustic traits tracked the shared history of the populations, which is unexpected for pan‐Amazonian taxa or for mate‐recognition traits. Divergence in coloration appeared uncorrelated with genetic distance, and might be partly attributed to local selective pressures, and perhaps to Batesian mimicry. Divergence in body‐shape traits was low. Legume plants form beneficial symbiotic interactions with nitrogen fixing bacteria (called rhizobia), with the rhizobia being accommodated in unique structures on the roots of the host plant. The legume/rhizobial symbiosis is responsible for a significant proportion of the global biologically available nitrogen. The initiation of this symbiosis is governed by a characteristic calcium oscillation within the plant root hair cells and this signal is activated by the rhizobia. Recent analyses on calcium time series data have suggested that stochastic effects have a large role to play in defining the nature of the oscillations. The use of multiple nonlinear time series techniques, however, suggests an alternative interpretation, namely deterministic chaos. We provide an extensive, nonlinear time series analysis on the nature of this calcium oscillation response. We build up evidence through a series of techniques that test for determinism, quantify linear and nonlinear components, and measure the local divergence of the system. Chaos is common in nature and it seems plausible that properties of chaotic dynamics might be exploited by biological systems to control processes within the cell. Systems possessing chaotic control mechanisms are more robust in the sense that the enhanced flexibility allows more rapid response to environmental changes with less energetic costs. The desired behaviour could be most efficiently targeted in this manner, supporting some intriguing speculations about nonlinear mechanisms in biological signaling.  相似文献

Two tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) mutants with dark testae displaying poor germination rate and percentage on both water and 100 microM gibberellin(4 + 7) were recovered. The mutants were allelic (black seed1-1; bks1-1 and bks1-2), inherited in Mendelian fashion as a recessive gene residing on chromosome 11. They are not allelic to bs (brown seed) -1, -2, or -4, which impair seed germination and possess dark testae. The bks/bs mutants accumulated dark pigment in the cell layers of the testa above the endothelium, which itself accumulated proanthocyanidins similar to wild type. The poor germination performance of bks mutant seeds was because of impediment of the mutant testae to radicle egress. Imbibition on gibberellin(4 + 7) did not ameliorate germination percentage or rate. The toughening of the bks testa and associated poor germination were partially overcome when seeds were not dried before germination or were dried under N(2). The seeds of the bks mutant have elevated activity of at least one enzyme responsible for the detoxification of reactive oxygen species. The bks mutant is epistatic to 12 anthocyaninless mutants of tomato. Bio- and physicochemical analysis of the bks testa determined that it accumulated a melanic substance. Inheritance of bks/bs mutations contrasts with that of the anthocyaninless mutants, which are inherited according to the genotype of the maternally derived testa. This suggests that the testa manufactures components before its demise that can maximize testa strength, whereas the endosperm/embryo produces factors that are conveyed to the testa, mitigating this process.  相似文献

Several mutants defective in the nodulation process during rhizobial or endomycorrhizal endosymbiosis of pea have been identified previously. We have integrated the map positions of two such nodulation mutations, sym9 and sym10, into the molecular map of pea by applying molecular-marker techniques combined with bulked segregant analysis (BSA). Lines P2 and P54 were found to carry alleles of sym9, line P56 carried an allele of sym10. F2 populations were derived from crosses of P2, P54 and P56, to JI281 and JI15, two of the parental lines that have been used previously to generate a molecular map of pea. sym9 was located on linkage group IV by AFLP-BSA analysis and subsequently mapped by RFLP in both F2 populations, P2 2 JI281 and P54 2 JI281. RFLP-BSA analysis was applied to assign sym10 to linkage group I. The RFLP marker locus, chs2, co-segregates with sym10 in the F2 population of P56 2 JI15.  相似文献

Many species of climbing frog possess large disc-like digital pads, which facilitate adhesion. The consensus of earlier studies is that frogs depend on a wet adhesive mechanism, chiefly influenced by pad area and surface tension properties of the mediating adhesive fluid. The relationship between morphology, size and adhesion is of particular interest for tree frogs, because evolution of adhesive ability has facilitated niche expansion into arboreal habitats. If frogs are geometrically similar, and growth occurs isometrically, then mass will increase at a higher rate than toe-pad area, and an adhesive system directly dependent on area may be adversely affected. We investigated scaling of adhesive ability with ontogeny in seven species of hylid tree frog to test whether the responses to the challenges of maintaining adhesion with growth were sufficient to allow adult frogs to stick as effectively on smooth substrates as juvenile frogs. In all species, mass increased at a lower rate than expected with isometric growth. This was less pronounced in larger species, perhaps owing to the demands of locomotory modes such as jumping. In smaller hylids, this non-isometric increase in mass was sufficient to enable adult frogs to adhere as effectively as juveniles. In larger species, however, the ability of adult frogs to adhere was significantly lower than that of juveniles, despite evidence of increased toe-pad efficiency. Within all species adhesive forces increased at a greater rate than toe-pad area, suggestive of changes in the relative influence of the contributory components of the wet adhesive mechanism with growth.  相似文献
