The epicuticular wax in three lines of Brassica napus (rape) has been investigated and the detailed chemistry and ultrastructure of the waxes examined. A distinct chemical make-up has been found for all three waxes which is correlated with three distinct crystallite structures. A tentative scheme for classification of Brassica wax mutants is described in which the two newly analysed rape mutants can be placed. Mass spectral analysis of all wax components confirms and extends previous ideas about the chemistry of Brassica waxes.  相似文献

We sought to determine the cardiovascular responses to increasing exercise intensities in postmenopausal women with different physical activity levels and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) status. Forty-four women (11 sedentary, 19 physically active, 14 master athletes; 24 not on HRT, 20 on HRT) completed treadmill exercise at 40, 60, 80, and 100% of maximal oxygen consumption. Oxygen consumption, heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac output, determined via acetylene rebreathing, were measured at each exercise intensity. HRT did not affect cardiovascular hemodynamics. Stroke volume (SV) decreased significantly between 40 and 100% of maximal oxygen consumption in all groups, and the decrease did not differ among groups. The greater oxygen consumption of the athletes at each intensity was due to their significantly greater cardiac output, which was the result of a significantly greater SV, compared with both of the less active groups. The athletes had significantly lower total peripheral resistance at each exercise intensity than did the two less active groups. There were no consistent significant hemodynamic differences between the physically active and sedentary women. These results indicate that SV decreases in postmenopausal women as exercise intensity increases to maximum, regardless of their habitual physical activity levels or HRT status.  相似文献

We characterized the response of root hair density to phosphorus (P) availability in Arabidopsis thaliana. Arabidopsis plants were grown aseptically in growth media with varied phosphorus concentrations, ranging from 1 mmol m3 to 2000 mmol m3 phosphorus. Root hair density (number of root hairs per mm of root length) was analysed starting at 7 d of growth. Root hair density was highly regulated by phosphorus availability, increasing significantly in roots exposed to low-phosphorus availability. The initial root hairs produced by the radicle were not sensitive to phosphorus availability, but began to respond after 9 d of growth. Root hair density was about five times greater in low phosphorus (1 mmol m3) than in high phosphorus (1000 mmol m3) media. Root hair density decreased logarithmically in response to increasing phosphorus concentrations within that range. Root hair density also increased in response to deficiencies of several other nutrients, but not as strongly as to low phosphorus. Indoleacetic acid (IAA), the auxin transport inhibitor 2-(p-chlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropionic acid (CMPA), the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), and the ethylene synthesis inhibitor amino-oxyacetic acid (AOA) all increased root hair density under high phosphorus but had very little effect under low phosphorus. Low phosphorus significantly changed root anatomy, causing a 9% increase in root diameter, a 31% decrease in the cross-sectional area of individual trichoblasts, a 40% decrease in the cross-sectional area of individual atrichoblasts, and 45% more cortical cells in cross-section. The larger number of cortical cells and smaller epidermal cell size in low phosphorus roots increased the number of trichoblast files from eight to 12. Two-thirds of increased root hair density in low phosphorus roots was caused by increased likelihood of trichoblasts to form hairs, and 33% of the increase was accounted for by changes in low phosphorus root anatomy resulting in an increased number of trichoblast files. These results show that phosphorus availability can fundamentally alter root anatomy, leading to changes in root hair density, which are presumably important for phosphorus acquisition.  相似文献

A Lewis-b-active glycosphingolipid containing a repetitive type-1 chain carbohydrate core was isolated from human colonic adenocarcinoma cell line Colo205. This glycosphingolipid was purified by HPLC and preparative high-performance thin-layer chromatography and its structure elucidated by positive-ion fast-atom-bombardment mass spectrometry with collision-induced disassociation, 1H-NMR spectroscopy and methylation analysis. 1. We examined the diffusion properties of terracotta clay saucers, of types often used as components in phosphorus-diffusing substrata for investigating nutrient limitation of epilithic algae.
2. Laboratory experiments showed that phosphorus diffusion was low and inconsistent (0.06–2.6 mg P day−1) through clay saucers filled with agar containing orthophosphate. Similarly, in situ release of phosphorus from two types of terracotta clay saucers (Australian and Italian) was variable (2–8 mg P day−1; 5–25%) under three flow regimes (0, 0.1 and 0.3 m s−1) over 30 days, with most phosphorus being released during the first day. Clogging of pores by agar appears to prevent the diffusion of phosphorus through the terracotta clay saucers. However, the two types of terracotta clay saucer also irreversibly sorbed large quantities of phosphorus (40–140 mg P).
3. Individual saucers can have markedly different physical and chemical properties both within and among terracotta types. Terracotta saucers also contain large quantities of iron, calcium and aluminium that are known binding agents for phosphorus. Variability in saucer composition and diffusion properties makes treatments difficult to replicate and weakens comparisons between studies that have used terracotta with different clay composition and manufacture.
4. We recommend that phosphorus-diffusing substrata should not be constructed from terracotta clay components.  相似文献

The effects of irradiances of 920 and 1200 mW m(-2) (biologically effective weighted irradiance) were examined in 2 Metarhizium album strains, 26 M. anisopliae strains, 1 M. flavoviride strain, and 1 M. taii strain isolated from sites located at latitudes from 61 degrees N to 54 degrees S. Conidia were exposed to UV-B from 1 to 6 h and subsequently examined for relative percentage culturability. Total dosage received at the end of the exposure periods ranged from 3.3 to 19.9 kJ m(-2) for the lower irradiance and from 4.3 to 25.9 kJ m(-2) for the higher irradiance. Both the irradiance values and the doses are environmentally realistic and can be observed even in temperate regions. The relationships between latitude of origin and UV-B tolerance were compared for the two levels of irradiance for the data from 1 and 2 h exposure. Exposure to both irradiances drastically reduced the relative percentage culturability of all strains. Tolerance to UV-B varied widely among strains and high variation was observed for both irradiances after all periods of exposure. After 1 h of exposure, a difference between the two irradiance levels was detectable, and this difference was magnified at longer irradiations. A significant quadratic relationship of decreasing UV-B tolerance with increasing latitude was observed after exposure of 1 and 2 h. The shape of the relationship did not differ for the two levels of irradiance. Also, we studied the effect of 1200 mW m(-2) irradiance on conidial germination time in 1 M. album strain, 7 M. anisopliae strains, and 1 M. taii strain. Exposure to UV-B delayed the germination of surviving conidia of all strains. In general, the delay in germination was directly proportional to the dose.  相似文献
