In order to understand the characters on which sexual selection might operate in plants, it is critical to assess the mechanisms by which pollen competition and mate choice occur. To address this issue we measured a number of postpollination characters, ranging from pollen germination and pollen tube growth to final seed paternity, in wild radish. Crosses were performed using four pollen donors on a total of 16 maternal plants (four each from four families). Maternal plants were grown under two watering treatments to evaluate the effects of maternal tissue on the process of mating. The four pollen donors differed significantly in number of seeds sired and differed overall in the mating characters measured. However, it was difficult to associate particular mechanistic characters with ability to sire seeds, perhaps because of interactions among pollen donors within styles or among pollen donors and maternal plants. The process of pollen tube growth and fertilization differed substantially among maternal watering treatments, with many early events occurring more quickly in stressed plants. Seed paternity, however, was somewhat more even among pollen donors used on stressed maternal plants, suggesting that when maternal tissue is more competent, mating is slowed and is more selective.  相似文献

Extreme preformation, the initiation of leaves or inflorescences more than 1 yr before maturation and function, is common in arctic and alpine habitats. This extended pattern of development provides a potential means to alleviate an apparent asynchrony between carbon supplied by photosynthesis in the summer and carbon demanded by growth in the spring. Allocation of resources to preforming organs has not been studied in herbs with multi-year patterns of preformation. Acomastylis rossii (Rosaceae) in the southern Rockies initiates leaves and inflorescences 2 yr prior to their maturation and function. Allocation to preforming organs in A. rossii was studied by means of a labeled carbon pulse chase experiment. During the summer, carbon is allocated directly to preforming organs and rhizomes from the mature leaves. Additional allocation of carbohydrate into preforming organs occurs in autumn after photosynthesis by mature leaves has ceased. Organ primordia initiated in the second year do not receive a substantial quantity of the labeled carbon from reserves stored in the rhizome the previous year. We conclude that concurrent photosynthesis is the primary source of carbon for preformation development.  相似文献

Mimulus gemmiparus (Scrophulariaceae), a rare endemic of Colorado, has a novel life history that depends on an unusual method of vegetative reproduction. The plants are functionally annuals; however, reproduction is asexual via propagules that have been termed gemmae. The morphological identity and the evolutionary antecedent of these propagules are unclear. We approached this problem through comparative developmental analyses of M. gemmiparus and the presumed progenitor species, Mimulus guttatus. In M. gemmiparus there are two meristems initiated in the axil of each leaf primordium. The distal meristem has the potential to produce either a lateral branch or a flower, and the proximal meristem becomes a vegetative propagule (the gemma) that is ultimately surrounded by an expanded, ensheathing petiole. The first leaves of the propagules are thickened and are the site of nutrient storage. Consequently, these propagules can be characterized morphologically as brood bulbils. Mimulus guttatus also has two meristems in each leaf axil; however, the proximal meristem typically remains dormant and serves no function in the life history of this species. Based on architectural and developmental correspondence, we hypothesize that the propagule of M. gemmiparus is homologous to the proximal meristem of M. guttatus. Comparative analysis shows that evolution of the bulbil has involved both the incorporation of features present in shoots of M. guttatus and the acquisition of novel features.  相似文献

Pyrosequencing technology is a powerful genotyping tool that requires the generation of single stranded DNA. Currently, two simple, solid-phase-based methods are available for this, but they require special equipment, they are not automated, and they are relatively expensive because of the need for biotinylated polymerase chain reaction primers. In this article, an enzymatic liquid-phase method for the generation of high-quality, single-stranded DNA, and its novel use for Pyrosequencing are described. Little is known about root architectural attributes that aid the capture of nitrate from coarse-textured soil profiles of high leaching potential. In this study, a range of root architectures from the herringbone to the dichotomous structure were simulated, and their capacity to take up nitrate leaching through a sandy profile was recorded. All root systems had equal total volume at each point in time, and so were considered cost equivalent. These simulations showed that the root architecture likely to maximize nitrate capture from sandy soils (under the Mediterranean rainfall pattern experienced in Western Australia) is one that quickly produces a high density of roots in the top-soil early in the season, thereby reducing total nitrate leached with opening season rains, but also has vigorous taproot growth, enabling access to deep-stored water and leached nitrate later in the season. This is the first published, spatially explicit attempt to assess the ability of different root architectures equivalent in cost, to capture nitrate from a spatially and temporally heterogeneous soil environment.  相似文献

Published field data for lupins grown in a deep sandy soil in the wheatbelt of south-western Australia were used to test the predictive ability of a model of three-dimensional root growth. The model has the capacity to simulate the growth of individual root sections in response to the supply and demand for water and nitrate. N mineralisation was not modelled explicitly, but was accounted for through the use of a seasonally variable mineralisation input derived from the field data. Simulated nitrogen and water contents and root length densities in the soil profile agreed well with observed profiles, although all were slightly under-predicted. A sensitivity analysis revealed that model predictions were most sensitive to the drained upper limit values (v/v) and the mineralisation rates (gN m–3 s–1) incorporated as external inputs to the model, along with the unit rate of N2 fixation (mol nodule–1 s–1) and unit root growth rates (m mol–1 s–1) which are physiological parameters previously calibrated for lupins. The amount of nitrate leached was predicted well. Spatial plots of nitrate leaching were a close inverse of the root length density plots, with the highest nitrate leaching below the inter-plant zones, and the least nitrate leaching directly below each plant. These results suggest that the root distribution of a legume species such as lupin can have an effect on the leaching of nitrate to depth. It may thus be possible to reduce the total amount of nitrate leached under lupin crops by investigating factors such as the spatial deployment of roots, planting densities and intercropping.  相似文献

This series of essays addresses plasticity from the perspective of developmental morphology. The first essay deals with the problem of distinguishing between plasticity and other types of ontogenetic variation. In a temporally varying environment, morphological plasticity may be expressed as the production of a succession of different metamers. However, even in a constant environment, plant metamers can vary dramatically, a phenomenon known as heteroblasty. Because heteroblasty and plasticity can yield similar patterns of ontogenetic variation, the two are often confounded in analyses of developmental plasticity. The second essay discusses the integration of plant phenotypic responses and finds that the evidence for integration is equivocal. The third section shows that developmental properties can constrain the expression of morphological plasticity. Developmental lags and the epiphenotype problem are particularly important features for analyses of the evolution and expression of plasticity. Finally, in answer to the question of strategies for studying plasticity, I emphasize the need for research at multiple levels and for the inclusion of a historical or phylogenetic perspective.  相似文献

A commercially available filtration method is described for the purification of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) templates and sequence-labeled products. The methodology is described for the automation of this application and its use on a high-throughput liquid handling robot and capillary-based automated DNA sequencer. Observations were made of stem sections stained for RNA and protein of Yucca whipplei ranging from germinated seedlings to 6-month-old plants. One-, two-, and three-month-old plants were labeled with tritiated thymidine, fixed in FAA, sectioned, stained with the Feulgen reaction, and prepared for autoradiography. The serial transverse sections were outlined with a drawing tube recording all labeled nuclei on a computer graphics tablet. Computer-assisted three-dimensional reconstructions were made to observe the locations of labeled nuclei. The two techniques are in agreement: the thickening meristem is broad near the top of the stem, occupies a narrower band at more basipetal levels, and disappears below the level of recent root initiation. There are no gaps in staining or labeling, and there are no changes in staining or labeling that would distinguish between the activities of the primary thickening meristem and the secondary thickening meristem in those plants which possess both. The meristems are continuous at all stages of development in the young vegetative stem. The STM is interpreted to be a developmental continuation of the PTM.  相似文献
