Seabird numbers can change rapidly as a result of environmental processes, both natural and anthropogenic. Informed management and conservation of seabirds requires accurate and precise monitoring of population size. However, for burrow‐nesting species this is rarely achieved due to spatial and temporal heterogeneity in burrow occupancy. Here, we describe a novel method for deriving more accurate population size estimates that employs mark‐recapture methods to correct for unknown variation in nest occupancy throughout a breeding season. We apply it to estimate breeding numbers of a colonial, burrowing seabird, the Little Penguin Eudyptula minor, on the Summerland Peninsula, Phillip Island, Australia. Estimates of active burrow numbers during the September 2008 to February 2009 breeding season were adjusted to numbers of breeding birds based on burrow occupation and modelled population demographics at six, fortnightly monitored reference sites. The population was estimated to be 26 100 (95% CI: 21 100–31 100) and 28 400 (23 800–33 000) breeding Penguins in two temporally separated surveys within one breeding season. We demonstrate using simulation that the method is robust to variation in burrow occupancy throughout the breeding season, providing consistent and more accurate estimates of population size. The advantage of using the corrected method is that confidence intervals will include the true population size. Confidence limits widened as burrow occupancy declined, reflecting the increased uncertainty as larger adjustments for low burrow occupancy were required. In contrast, the uncorrected method that uses burrow occupancy alone as a measure of breeding numbers was inconsistent and significantly underestimated population size across much of the breeding season. Although requiring considerably more survey effort, the corrected approach provides a more accurate means for monitoring population changes in colonially breeding animals while collecting demographic data that can help diagnose the drivers of population change.  相似文献

A central issue in evolutionary biology concerns whether morphology, performance and habitat use have coevolved. We investigated evolutionary relationships among the size of the subdigital toepad, clinging ability and perch height in 12 species of Caribbean Anolis lizard. Specifically, we predicted that: (1) because larger anole species tend to perch high in the canopy, both toepad area and clinging ability should scale with positive allometry to enable small and large lizards to possess approximately similar ratios of both variables relative to mass; (2) anole species with relatively larger toepads (i.e. size-adjusted) should be relatively better clingers compared with species with relatively small toepads; (3) species that perch high in the canopy should possess relatively large clinging abilities (either on an absolute or a size-adjusted basis). Our first hypothesis was refuted, as both toepad area and clinging ability scaled close to isometry (0.67) relative to mass, indicating that large lizard species have low ratios of clinging ability to mass compared with small lizard species. However, our second and third predictions were confirmed. Anole species with relatively larger toepads were relatively better clingers compared with species with relatively smaller toepads. Anole species that perched high in the canopy (either on an absolute scale or relative to size) tended to have relatively larger toepads and greater clinging capacities compared with species that perched lower in the canopy. Abstract:  Natural assemblages of a new conodont taxon, Notiodella keblon, from the Upper Ordovician Soom Shale Lagerstätte of South Africa contain 17 elements. This is the first time that a 17‐element apparatus plan has been unequivocally demonstrated in conodonts. The apparatus comprises paired P1, P2, P3, M, S1, S2, S3 and S4 elements and an unpaired, axial S0 element and provides a new template for use in the reconstruction of apparatuses from the collections of dispersed elements, particularly for those with icrion‐bearing P1 elements and perhaps for other balognathids.  相似文献

A scrub‐oak woodland has maintained higher aboveground biomass accumulation after 11 years of atmospheric CO2 enrichment (ambient +350 μmol CO2 mol?1), despite the expectation of strong nitrogen (N) limitation at the site. We hypothesized that changes in plant available N and exploitation of deep sources of inorganic N in soils have sustained greater growth at elevated CO2. We employed a suite of assays performed in the sixth and 11th year of a CO2 enrichment experiment designed to assess soil N dynamics and N availability in the entire soil profile. In the 11th year, we found no differences in gross N flux, but significantly greater microbial respiration (P≤0.01) at elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 lowered extractable inorganic N concentrations (P=0.096) considering the whole soil profile (0–190 cm). Conversely, potential net N mineralization, although not significant in considering the entire profile (P=0.460), tended to be greater at elevated CO2. Ion‐exchange resins placed in the soil profile for approximately 1 year revealed that potential N availability at the water table was almost 3 × greater than found elsewhere in the profile, and we found direct evidence using a 15N tracer study that plants took up N from the water table. Increased microbial respiration and shorter mean residence times of inorganic N at shallower depths suggests that enhanced SOM decomposition may promote a sustained supply of inorganic N at elevated CO2. Deep soil N availability at the water table is considerable, and provides a readily available source of N for plant uptake. Increased plant growth at elevated CO2 in this ecosystem may be sustained through greater inorganic N supply from shallow soils and N uptake from deep soil.  相似文献

Transmissible multiple resistance to tetracycline, ampicillin and streptomycin was found to be associated with transfer of the larger of the two plasmids (˜ 80 and ˜ 45 kbp) present in a group of tetracycline-resistant Escherichia coli strains isolated from the rumen of sheep. A second group of rumen tetR strains, which differed in the ability to utilize several sugars, showed non-transmissible resistances to tetracycline and streptomycin.  相似文献
