The effects of partial defoliation on photosynthesis, whole-seedling carbon allocation, partitioning and growth were studied for two species with contrasting foliar traits. Field-grown seedlings of deciduous Japanese larch ( Larix leptolepis ) and evergreen red pine ( Pinus resinosa ) were defoliated by hand in early summer for 2 consecutive years. In the first year (1990), seedlings were defoliated by removing the distal 0, 25, 50 or 75% of each needle. In the second year (1991), seedlings were defoliated either 0 or 50%, regardless of previous defoliation treatments. Defoliation had little effect on photosynthesis and starch concentration in whole seedlings of either species in the first year. In the second year, photosynthesis increased in both species in response to the 1991 defoliation treatment, and in red pine also increased in response to the 1990 defoliation treatment. Further, in 1991 both larch and pine had decreased whole-seedling total non-structural carbohydrate concentrations in all seedlings that were defoliated at least once over the 2-yr period. This decrease was noted mostly in the starch component of the non-structural carbohydrates, and was similar in both species. In 1991, biomass was similarly decreased in both species in response to 1991 defoliation. Both species showed overcompensation in total and component biomass in seedlings defoliated by 25% in 1990. Overall, the results do not support the widely held belief that evergreen trees are substantially more affected than deciduous trees by defoliation.  相似文献

In environments where habitat quality varies, the mechanism by which individuals assess and select habitats has significant consequences on their spatial distribution and ability to respond to environmental change. Each year, thousands of Black Brent Geese Branta bernicla nigricans migrate to the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area (TLSA), Alaska, to undergo a flightless wing‐moult. Over the last three decades, moulting Brent Geese have changed their distribution within the TLSA, redistributing from inland, freshwater wetlands towards coastal, brackish wetlands. To understand better the mechanism by which Brent Geese select a moult site, as well as reasons behind the long‐term shift of moulting distributions, we examined movements and habitat use of birds marked with GPS‐transmitters during the pre‐moult period. Brent Geese did not generally migrate directly to their moulting site during the pre‐moult period, defined as the time from arrival at the moulting grounds to the onset of flightlessness. Rather, individuals used an average of 3.7 ± 0.6 (se) wetland complexes and travelled a minimum of 95.14 ± 15.84 km during the pre‐moult period. Moreover, 69% of Brent Geese visited their final moult site only to leave and visit other sites before returning for the flightless moult. Brent Geese spent significant time in both inland freshwater and coastal estuarine habitats during the pre‐moult, irrespective of the habitat in which they ultimately moulted. Whereas previous research suggested that Brent Geese choose moult sites based largely upon the experience of previous years, our observations suggest a mechanism of moult site selection whereby Brent Geese ‘prospect’ for moult sites, visiting multiple potential moult sites across varied habitat types, presumably gathering information from each site and correspondingly using this information to choose an appropriate moult site. By allowing individuals to adjust their distributions in response to habitat quality cues that may change annually, such as forage type and availability, prospecting may have influenced the long‐term shift in moulting distributions of Brent Geese in the TLSA.  相似文献

Lethaia, 10.1111/j.1502‐3931.2009.00203.x A recent discovery of an unusually preserved belemnite from Nusplingen comprises the extraordinarily rare remains of beaks and nearly in situ arm hooks, as well as the ink sac and an incomplete phragmocone. So far, Hibolithes semisulcatus ( Münster, 1830 ) is the only belemnite known from the Nusplingen Lithographic Limestone (Upper Jurassic, Late Kimmeridgian, Beckeri Zone, Ulmense Subzone; SW Germany) that has the same phragmocone shape and size, and thus we assign the new specimen to this taxon. The rostrum was probably lost due to a lethal predation attempt in which the prey was killed but not entirely eaten. For the first time a specimen reveals details of the belemnite beak morphology, which we compare with the beaks of other Jurassic coleoids. This specimen presently represents the only known rostrum‐bearing belemnite of post‐Toarcian age with preserved non‐mineralized body parts. With the new discovery, Nusplingen now represents the only locality which has yielded complete beak apparatuses from all major Jurassic cephalopod groups. □Beaks, Belemnitida, Coleoidea, Germany, Late Jurassic, morphology, taphonomy.  相似文献

Abstract.  The phylogeny of the species of the scarabaeid subgenus Serica (genus Serica MacLeay, 1819) was inferred from a parsimony analysis and the use of 117 morphological characters of adults. Successive weighting was employed to further evaluate the phylogenetic relationships, and the geographical changes in the distribution in certain lineages were explored. Four major lineages may be recognized from the strict consensus tree within the ingroup: (1) Calloserica ; (2) Gastroserica + Neoserica ; (3) Lasioserica ; and (4) Serica including the representatives of Taiwanoserica . Pachyserica proved to be monophyletic only after successive weighting based on the retention index. The taxa of Taiwanoserica are nested within the species of Serica . Consequently, Taiwanoserica ( stat.n. ) is ranked as a subgenus of Serica . The clade Serica (subgenus Serica ) comprised the majority of the species included in this study. Serica ( sensu stricto ) species of the Himalayas are a polyphyletic group. Several major younger clades of Serica ( sensu stricto ) are not restricted to just one geographical region, but cover widely distant ranges (such as the Himalaya and eastern Tibet). Dispersal is hypothesized multiple times from the Himalaya to eastern Tibet/Indochina and vice versa, and also between the Japanese islands and eastern Tibet. Several hypotheses are discussed for an important role of the entire Himalaya–south-eastern Tibet orogenic system for the evolution of the subgenus Serica . More recently, the progressive uplift of the Tibetan Plateau provided an efficient barrier to the westward dispersal of eastern Palaearctic species.  相似文献

Abstract: Groenlandibelus rosenkrantzi from the Maastrichtian of Greenland has long been thought to constitute an early representative of spirulid coleoids. This study shows that this view must be reassessed, at least in part. A re‐investigation of the types and of material recorded subsequently has revealed that none of these specimens is conspecific with the holotype of G. rosenkrantzi. Cyrtobelus birkelundae gen. nov, sp. nov. differs from the type of G. rosenkrantzi in having lower chambers and in lacking an apically elongated sheath. The longiconic phragmocone of G. rosenkrantzi has more features in common with the presumed spirulid genus Naefia. A specimen described in detail by J. A. Jeletzky in the mid 1960s as ‘G. rosenkrantzi’ is designated holotype of C. birkelundae sp. nov., which means that internal phragmocone features are still unknown in G. rosenkrantzi. Cyrtobelus hornbyense gen. nov, sp. nov. from the Campanian of western Canada constitutes the first record of early spirulids from the northeast Pacific, being based on seventeen extraordinarily well‐preserved phragmocones. This species differs from C. birkelundae sp. nov. only in the width of the siphuncular tube. The presence of a caecum, a nacre‐less conotheca that represents the continuation of the protoconch conotheca, conothecal flaps that anchor the mural parts of the septa, and a thin investment‐like sheath are characters shared only with Recent Spirula. In particular, the unusual protoconch architecture of Cyrtobelus gen. nov. challenges a phylogenetic origin within bactritoid‐like coleoids.  相似文献
