In south-east Asia, during Quaternary glaciations, increased seasonality and sea level decreases of ~120 m caused considerable fragmentation of the rainforest. It is believed that most of the region's core was covered with savannah vegetation, and rainforest was confined to a few refugia. We investigated the geographical extent of the savannah vegetation and the positions of the refugia, using a combination of palynonlogical, geological, fossil and termite data. Our results show that during the Last Glacial Maximum, most of Thailand, Peninsula Malaysia, western and southern Borneo, eastern and southern Sumatra, and Java were probably covered by savannah. Rainforest refugia were probably present in northern and eastern Borneo, northern and western Sumatra and the Mentawai islands. In a series of experiments between 1970 and 1973 the application of benomyl or thiophanate methyl to field-grown strawberries, planted on Verticillium-mtested land, gave control of wilt for up to 5 months, the duration of control being related to the amount of fungicide applied in the spring. Treatment of inoculated plants grown on in chloropicrin-fumigated soil was effective for at least two seasons. An autumn-planted multi-factorial experiment in heavily-infested soil showed that, to achieve maximum wilt control, it was advantageous to grow cv. Gorella rather than cv. Cambridge Vigour; to drench the runners at planting rather than to dip them in the fungicide suspension; and to use a high concentration (0–075 % a-i-) and large volume (600 ml per plant) for a supplementary treatment in May rather than a lower concentration (0.025 %) or smaller volume (400 ml). There were small but significant advantages in applying benomyl rather than thiophanate methyl, and in using 0–2% a.i. suspension at planting rather than 0–05%. No advantage was gained by dividing the spring application into two equal doses applied 2 wk apart. Extrapolation from the logarithmic relation between wilt index and total dose of fungicide applied in the spring suggested that I.I g/plant would have given almost complete control until October; such control had been achieved in an earlier experiment in which 1–2 g/plant was applied. Crop yield in the second year was determined by the treatment applied in the first year, but although these treatments had given significantly better control of wilt in Gorella than in Cambridge Vigour, the greater growth and yield potentials of the latter cultivar had an over-riding effect on crop production; Cambridge Vigour yielded more than Gorella under all chemical treatments, but in the absence of treatment Gorella gave a larger crop than Cambridge Vigour. A proposed regime, entailing spring and autumn applications, is aimed at minimizing the colonization of the plant throughout the year, thus reducing the production of new inoculum and, by limiting the quantity of the pathogen in contact with the systemic chemicals, minimizing the probability of selecting fungicide-resistant variants of V. dahliae.  相似文献

Abstract Climatic data and collection records for the cactophilic Drosophila aldrichi and Drosophila buzzatii for 97 localities were used to examine the effects of geographical location, season, host plant species and climatic factors on their range and relative abundance. Temporal variation in relative abundance was assessed from monthly collections over 4 years at one locality. Effects of weather variables over the 28 days before each collection were examined. A generalized linear model of the spatial data showed significant geographical variation in relative abundance, and significant climatic effects, with the proportion of D. aldrichi higher in the warm season, and increasing as temperature variation decreased and moisture indices increased. The temporal data gave generally concordant results, as D. aldrichi proportion was higher in summer and autumn, and increased as maximum and minimum temperatures increased, and as variation in maximum temperature decreased. In a laboratory competition experiment, D. aldrichi eliminated D. buzzatii at 31°C, but was itself eliminated at 18°C and 25°C. The range of D. buzzatii is constrained only by availability of its host plant, Opuntia species, although its relative abundance is reduced in the northern part of its distribution. The range of D. aldrichi, from central Queensland to northern NSW, Australia, is entirely within that of D. buzzatii, and its relative abundance decreases from north to south. Both climate and weather, particularly temperature variability, have direct effects on the relative abundances of the two species, and both likely act indirectly by influencing the outcome of interspecific competition.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. One intact and 2 splenectomized calves were infected with Babesia divergens and the persistence of the parasites in the blood was followed by periodic subinoculations into susceptible splenectomized calves. After periods varying from 3–7 years the parasites failed to be demonstrable by this method. When the immunity of the animals was challenged by the intravenous injection of blood containing Babesia divergens , they were all resistant to reinfection. These observations add support to the suggestion that sterile immunity may play a part in the resistance of cattle to reinfection with B. divergens.  相似文献

Whole-plant ABA flux and the regulation of water loss in Cedrella odorata   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Three-month-old Cedrella odorata seedlings were exposed to a soil-drying treatment. During this period, xylem sap was periodically collected from the plant by applying pneumatic pressure to the roots. This also allowed whole-plant water status to be measured by recording the balancing pressure applied. The concentration of ABA in xylem sap (C) was related to the whole-plant transpiration rate (V) which was measured with a sap flow gauge. The analysis of these paired measurements centred on how the reciprocal of C (R) varied with respect to V. This revealed that (1) the observed increases in C could not be explained by the reductions in V alone, (2) initially, decreases in V were associated with proportional increases in the whole-plant ABA flux (M), and (3) this relationship broke down at low values of V since zero flow was associated with a finite value for C estimated to be 41 pmol ABA mmol?1 H2O. A simple static model is developed from the observations that is able to explain the data well, and the results are discussed in terms of the effects of ABA on stomatal conductance (gsw).  相似文献

Summary. Two hundred and eighty-two alloantisera were submitted by 20 participating laboratories from 13 countries and tested against lymphocytes of 1298 cattle. The cell panel consisted of samples from 38 Bos taurus breeds, 11 Bos taurus crossbreeds, 4 Bos indicus breeds, 6 Bos taurus X Bos indicus , and a variety of other crossbred populations. Using a standardized lymphocytotoxicity test, all 17 previously identified BoLA specificities were confirmed. The workshop produced agreement on 16 new lymphocyte alloantigenic specificities. Three of the new specificities behaved as splits of previously identified BoLA specificities. Four of the new specificities behaved as alleles at the agreed BoLA-A locus. Seven new specificities are tentatively assigned to the BoLA-A locus but require further definition. Two new specificities may represent products of a second closely-linked BoLA locus.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Examination of littoral fish Blennius pholis and Cottus bubalis caught at Aberystwyth and Porth Cwyfan, Wales. U.K., revealed 2 species of coccidia.
Eimeria dingleyi sp. n. Oocysts spherical (16.1–19.2) to subspherical (13.9–14.2 × 18.8–20.0) μm, with thin walls; sporulation outside the host to produce ellipsoid sporocysts; endogenous phases in epithelial cells throughout intestine; 26 of 58 B. pholis infected.
Eimeria variabilis (Thélohan) Reichenow. Oocysts spherical (11.9–14.6) to subspherical (9.2–10.9 × 13.9–14.3) μm; sporulation in lining of pyloric ceca and rectum; previously unrecorded schizonts and gametocytes present; 21 of 25 C. bubalis infected.
Electron microscopy revealed that the oocyst wall of E. variabilis consists of a thin membrane whereas the sporocyst wall is thick and 3-layered. Typical oocyst wall-forming bodies were absent from the macrogamete. Cytochemical tests on the endogenous stages of E. dingleyi and E. variabilis indicated that in general they resembled other coccidia in their chemical constitution.  相似文献

[14C]Sucrose, [14C]glucose and [14C]fructose were introducedinto potato tubers held at 10 °C and the redistributionof label chased over a 65 d period in storage. Respiratory losseswere identical in all treatments, as was the partitioning of14C between soluble and insoluble forms. Sucrose was the predominantlabelled sugar in the tubers after 20 h, regardless of the original[14C]sugar introduced, and was loaded and distributed throughoutthe tubers by the internal phloem system. After 20 h the proportionsof labelled sugars bore no relationship to those of the unlabelledendogenous sugars. However, with time the percentage of 14Cin sucrose fell while that in glucose increased and by 65 dthe proportions of the labelled sugars more closely resembledthe endogenous pools. Fructose represented a consistently lowproportion of both the labelled and unlabelled sugars. By 21d a considerable proportion of the soluble 14C had been convertedto starch (approx. 25% of the total tuber 14C), this value remainingrelatively constant for the remainder of the storage period.Sprouts which formed on the tubers contained up to 6% of thetotal tuber 14C but less than 0.2% of the tuber dry matter.It is suggested that the bulk of the translocated [14C]sucroseentered the symplast and exchanged slowly with the bulk of thesugars in the storage cell vacuoles. SYNOPSIS. Six different species of Myxosporidia were recorded from fish of the River Lugg. Myxobolus muelleri, M. artus, M. macrocapsularis, Henneguya zschokkei, H. psorospermica and H. oviperda .
Leuciscus cephalus, L. leuciscus and Rutilus rutilus infected with M. muelleri were common; of these 3 hosts, L. cephalus had the highest intensity of infection and the greatest number of infected organs and tissues. M. muelleri was compared from all the different infection sites each month where possible, from the same host ( i.e., L. cephalus ) and from the same site on different hosts (i.e. from the gills of all 3 hosts). No seasonal variation in occurrence, spore shape or size was found for M. muelleri , but spore size varied depending on the host and site of infection.
Tailed and tailless forms of H. zschokkei were found on L. leucicus and H. oviperda on E. lucius . Only tailless H. psorospermica were found.
Variations in spore form and size are discussed in relation to their use as taxonomic characters.  相似文献
