Relocating ground squirrels within their natural distribution range is a popular tool in wildlife management in Central–Eastern Europe. Nevertheless, wildlife management lacks both a carefully developed and tested translocation guide and methods. We evaluated conditions of release method (time of release and retention of animals) that affect short-term settlement of translocated ground squirrels in the central region of Hungary. In a field experiment, we translocated 117 individuals from an international airport to a protected site in 2000. We found that release time should precede the animals' natural, daily activity peak. The use of retention caps combined with artificial burrows instead of complex acclimation cages works successfully to prevent animals from dispersing from the release site.  相似文献

We use topological data analysis to investigate the three dimensional spatial structure of the locus of afferent neuron terminals in crickets Acheta domesticus. Each afferent neuron innervates a filiform hair positioned on a cercus: a protruding appendage at the rear of the animal. The hairs transduce air motion to the neuron signal that is used by a cricket to respond to the environment. We stratify the hairs (and the corresponding afferent terminals) into classes depending on hair length, along with position. Our analysis uncovers significant structure in the relative position of these terminal classes and suggests the functional relevance of this structure. Our method is very robust to the presence of significant experimental and developmental noise. It can be used to analyze a wide range of other point cloud data sets.  相似文献

Recent experimental results indicate that, in single Escherichia coli cells, the fluctuations in mRNA level are uncorrelated with those of protein. However, a basic two-stage model for prokaryotic gene expression suggests that there ought to be a degree of correlation between the two. Therefore, it is important to investigate realistic modifications of the basic model that have the potential to reduce the theoretical level of the correlation. In this work, we focus on translational and reporter maturation delay, reporting that its introduction into the two-stage model reduces the cross correlation between instantaneous mRNA and protein levels. Our results indicate that the experimentally observed sample correlation coefficient between mRNA and protein levels may increase if the protein measurements are shifted back in time by the value of the delay.  相似文献

The recommendation architecture has been proposed as a system architecture which can enable a system to learn to perform a complex combination of interrelated functions. The capability of a system with the recommendation architecture to learn to manage complex telecommunication backbone networks has been investigated. A network model with a number of nodes and links and carrying realistic but randomly generated traffic was used as the target for the management system. Traffic data taken from the model was used as input to the recommendation architecture system. The traffic data was organized into inputs once every 5 minutes, and the management system organized these inputs into a hierarchy of repetition similarity. It was demonstrated that the outputs of this hierarchy provided information on the condition of the network. This output information was a compressed version of the inputs which correlated with major network conditions.  相似文献

The case of a one-month-old patient admitted to the Department of Pediatrics (Medical and Health Science Center, Debrecen University) because of respiratory distress caused by a cervical mass compressing the upper respiratory pathways is presented. The mass could only be partially removed, the histological diagnosis proved to be neuroblastoma (SBCT: "small blue cell tumor"). Despite the fact that the DNA index of tumor cells (ploidy measurements) and the age of the patient suggested a favourable prognosis, the tumor continued to grow and metastases appeared. Because of symptoms of compression exerted on the respiratory system by the tumor, chemotherapy had to be applied. Since a standard OPEC/OJEC chemotherapeutic protocol proved to be not entirely effective and a residual tumor was still present, retinoic acid and interferon treatment was introduced. Presently, 4 years after the diagnosis, the patient is in complete remission and can be considered to be cured. The case presented here demonstrates that despite the favorable prognosis of the majority of infant neuroblastomas, in some cases the anatomic location of the tumor, leading to disturbance of vital functions, may serve as indication of chemotherapy. Our experience also proved the efficacy of retinoic acid and interferon treatment in relapsed neuroblastoma.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Effects of pentosan polysulfate (PPS) and the structurally related sulfated polyanions dextran sulfate, fucoidan, and heparin on the scavenger receptor-mediated and fluid-phase endocytosis in GP8 immortalized rat brain endothelial cells were investigated.2. Using 1,1-dioctadecyl-3,3,3,3-tetramethylindocarboxyamine perchlorate-labeled acetylated low-density lipoprotein (DiI-AcLDL), we found a binding site with high affinity and low binding capacity, and another one with low affinity and high binding capacity. Increasing ligand concentrations could not saturate DiI-AcLDL uptake. DiI-AcLDL uptake, but not binding, was sensitive to pretreatment with filipin, an inhibitor of caveola formation.3. PPS (20–200 g/ml) significantly reduced the binding of DiI-AcLDL after coincubation for 3 hr, though this effect was less expressed after 18 hr. Among other polyanions, only fucoidan decreased the DiI-AcLDL binding after 3 hr, whereas dextran sulfate significantly increased it after 18 hr. PPS treatment induced an increase in DiI-AcLDL uptake, whereas other polysulfated compounds caused a significant reduction.4. Fluid-phase endocytosis determined by the accumulation of Lucifer yellow was concentration and time dependent in GP8 cells. Coincubation with PPS or other sulfated polyanions could not significantly alter the rate of Lucifer yellow uptake.5. In conclusion, PPS decreased the binding and increased the uptake of DiI-AcLDL in cerebral endothelial cells, an effect not mimicked by the other polyanions investigated.  相似文献

Physical mapping of 13 different breakpoints on the short arm of chromosome 16 using previously mapped probes and the subsequent mapping of additional probes enabled the division of this portion of the chromosome into six different intervals. D16S94 was mapped between HBA and D16S80 and is closer to PKD1 than either HBA or D16S80. A tight linkage group which includes FRA16A, D16S8, and D16S79 was identified. Seven breakpoints, including FRA16A, could not be separated by probe localizations. This study provides the basis for the development of detailed maps of the short arm of chromosome 16.  相似文献

We hypothesized that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has a role in the local regulation of skeletal muscle blood flow, thus significantly affecting the myogenic tone of arterioles. In our study, we investigated the effects of exogenous H2O2 on the diameter of isolated, pressurized (at 80 mmHg) rat gracilis skeletal muscle arterioles (diameter of approximately 150 microm). Lower concentrations of H2O2 (10(-6)-3 x 10(-5) M) elicited constrictions, whereas higher concentrations of H2O2 (6 x 10(-5)-3 x 10(-4) M), after initial constrictions, caused dilations of arterioles (at 10(-4) M H2O2, -19 +/- 1% constriction and 66 +/- 4% dilation). Endothelium removal reduced both constrictions (to -10 +/- 1%) and dilations (to 33 +/- 3%) due to H2O2. Constrictions due to H2O2 were completely abolished by indomethacin and the prostaglandin H2/thromboxane A2 (PGH2/TxA2) receptor antagonist SQ-29548. Dilations due to H2O2 were significantly reduced by inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (to 38 +/- 7%) but were unaffected by clotrimazole or sulfaphenazole (inhibitors of cytochrome P-450 enzymes), indomethacin, or SQ-29548. In endothelium-denuded arterioles, clotrimazole had no effect, whereas H2O2-induced dilations were significantly reduced by charybdotoxin plus apamin, inhibitors of Ca(2+)-activated K+ channels (to 24 +/- 3%), the selective blocker of ATP-sensitive K+ channels glybenclamide (to 14 +/- 2%), and the nonselective K(+)-channel inhibitor tetrabutylammonium (to -1 +/- 1%). Thus exogenous administration of H2O2 elicits 1) release of PGH2/TxA2 from both endothelium and smooth muscle, 2) release of nitric oxide from the endothelium, and 3) activation of K+ channels, such as Ca(2+)-activated and ATP-sensitive K+ channels in the smooth muscle resulting in biphasic changes of arteriolar diameter. Because H2O2 at low micromolar concentrations activates several intrinsic mechanisms, we suggest that H2O2 contributes to the local regulation of skeletal muscle blood flow in various physiological and pathophysiological conditions.  相似文献
