The intensity of selection exerted by brood parasites on their hosts depends on the proportion of nests that are parasitized and the fitness costs of parasitism. Nest detection by brood parasites influences the probability of parasitism, and we propose that the difficulty faced by brood parasites of finding nests on the ground may make ground‐nesting species subject to lower levels of parasitism, causing a reduction in levels of defence compared with species breeding in shrubs, trees and elsewhere above the ground. We tested the prediction that the rejection rate of Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus eggs by hosts is inversely related to the frequency with which they build nests on the ground, both at local and at continental scales. First, we used estimates of the rejection rate of non‐mimetic model eggs experimentally introduced into the nests of 26 potential host species breeding in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of southern Spain. Most species tested in the Sierra Nevada showed high rejection rates of both mimetic and non‐mimetic eggs, whereas the European Robin Erithacus rubecula, with a low rejection rate, was the only species that was regularly parasitized. At the continental scale we used all available published information on rejection rates of non‐mimetic models by European hosts of the Common Cuckoo. The frequency of ground‐nesting explained interspecific variation in rejection rate of non‐mimetic model eggs both for the species tested in the Sierra Nevada and for all European hosts after controlling for all other life‐history variables known to affect rejection rates. An effect of the abundance of trees in a particular habitat, previously shown to affect parasitism by the Common Cuckoo, was only apparent from analyses of continental‐scale data and not from the Sierra Nevada mountains, suggesting that particular properties of mountainous areas affect Common Cuckoo parasitism. Ground‐nesting species showed lower rejection rates than species breeding in bushes or trees. These results suggest that species nesting on the ground may have suffered lower parasitism pressures in their historical coevolutionary interactions with the Common Cuckoo.  相似文献

Zn (SZn), Cu (SCu), Fe (SFe), vitamin A (SVA) and vitamin E (SVE) were measured in blood serum samples of 85 healthy pre-school children aged 2-6 yr. from the rural community of Canaguá, Mérida State, Venezuela. The relationship between these biochemical indexes was also investigated. The mean serum concentrations of zinc, copper, iron, vitamin A and vitamin E were 0.74 +/- 0.25, 1.18 +/- 0.30, 0.76 +/- 0.20, 0.30 +/- 0.15 and 5.87 +/- 0.43 mg/L, respectively. There was a tendency for SZn to increase with age, whereas SCu and SVA decreased. There was no significant difference in serum trace elements and fat-soluble vitamin concentration between males and females in the different age groups. SFe tended to be lower than that reported in the literature. However, the age groups studied showed no statistically significant sex- and age-related differences. The present study shows that there is a complex interaction between SZn, SCu, SFe, SVA, SVE and age of the children. Multiple regression analysis showed serum zinc was strongly related to serum copper, and serum iron. Serum vitamin A was strongly related to serum zinc and serum vitamin E, whereas serum vitamin E was strongly related to serum zinc, serum copper, and serum vitamin A. On the other hand, our observations also suggest that more detailed studies of these metals and fat-soluble vitamins should be carried out, and that the study should include nutritional surveys, metabolic balances and associations between SZn, SCu, SFe, SVA and SVE and anthropometric variables (height, weight, body mass index and skinfold thickness).  相似文献

Microorganisms in nature do not exist in isolation but rather interact with other species in their environment. Some microbes interact via syntrophic associations, in which the metabolic by-products of one species serve as nutrients for another. These associations sustain a variety of natural communities, including those involved in methanogenesis. In anaerobic syntrophic communities, energy is transferred from one species to another, either through direct contact and exchange of electrons, or through small molecule diffusion. Thermodynamics plays an important role in governing these interactions, as the oxidation reactions carried out by the first community member are only possible because degradation products are consumed by the second community member. This work presents the development and analysis of genome-scale network reconstructions of the bacterium Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans and the methanogenic archaeon Methanospirillum hungatei. The models were used to verify proposed mechanisms of ATP production within each species. We then identified additional constraints and the cellular objective function required to match experimental observations. The thermodynamic S. fumaroxidans model could not explain why S. fumaroxidans does not produce H2 in monoculture, indicating that current methods might not adequately estimate the thermodynamics, or that other cellular processes (e.g., regulation) play a role. We also developed a thermodynamic coculture model of the association between the organisms. The coculture model correctly predicted the exchange of both H2 and formate between the two species and suggested conditions under which H2 and formate produced by S. fumaroxidans would be fully consumed by M. hungatei.  相似文献

Spike threshold filters incoming inputs and thus gates activity flow through neuronal networks. Threshold is variable, and in many types of neurons there is a relationship between the threshold voltage and the rate of rise of the membrane potential (dVm/dt) leading to the spike. In primary sensory cortex this relationship enhances the sensitivity of neurons to a particular stimulus feature. While Na+ channel inactivation may contribute to this relationship, recent evidence indicates that K+ currents located in the spike initiation zone are crucial. Here we used a simple Hodgkin-Huxley biophysical model to systematically investigate the role of K+ and Na+ current parameters (activation voltages and kinetics) in regulating spike threshold as a function of dVm/dt. Threshold was determined empirically and not estimated from the shape of the Vm prior to a spike. This allowed us to investigate intrinsic currents and values of gating variables at the precise voltage threshold. We found that Na+ inactivation is sufficient to produce the relationship provided it occurs at hyperpolarized voltages combined with slow kinetics. Alternatively, hyperpolarization of the K+ current activation voltage, even in the absence of Na+ inactivation, is also sufficient to produce the relationship. This hyperpolarized shift of K+ activation allows an outward current prior to spike initiation to antagonize the Na+ inward current such that it becomes self-sustaining at a more depolarized voltage. Our simulations demonstrate parameter constraints on Na+ inactivation and the biophysical mechanism by which an outward current regulates spike threshold as a function of dVm/dt.  相似文献

A nonstructured model was used to study the dynamics of gibberellic acid production in a stirred tank bioreactor. Experimental data were obtained from submerged batch cultures of Gibberella fujikuroi (CDBB H‐984) grown in varying ratios of glucose‐corn oil as the carbon source. The nitrogen depletion effect was included in mathematical model by considering the specific kinetic constants as a linear function of the normalized nitrogen consumption rate. The kinetics of biomass growth and consumption of phosphate and nitrogen were based on the logistic model. The traditional first‐order kinetic model was used to describe the specific consumption of glucose and corn oil. The nitrogen effect was solely included in the phosphate and corn oil consumption and biomass growth. The model fit was satisfactory, revealing the dependence of the kinetics with respect to the nitrogen assimilation rate. Through simulations, it was possible to make diagrams of specific growth rate and specific rate of substrate consumptions, which was a powerful tool for understanding the metabolic interactions that occurred during the various stages of fermentation process. This kinetic analysis provided the proposal of a possible mechanism of regulation on growth, substrate consumptions, and production of gibberellic acid (GA3) in G. fujikuroi. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol.
