A medium was devised for the rapid presumptive identification of Aeromonas hydrophila. It also offered good differentiation of Klebsiella, Proteus, and other enteric species. Mannitol fermentation, inositol fermentation, ornithine decarboxylation and deamination, indole production, motility, and H2S production from sodium thiosulfate and cysteine could be recorded in a single tube of the medium.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the intestinal bacterial flora of Canada geese and whistling swans were carried out with the finding that wild birds harbor significantly more fecal coliforms than fecal streptococci. The reverse was typical of captive and fasting birds. Neither Salmonella spp. nor Shigella spp. were isolated from 44 migratory waterfowl that were wintering in the Chesapeake Bay region. Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli were detected in seven birds. Geese eliminated 10(7) and swans 10(9) fecal coliforms per day. Results of in situ studies showed that large flocks of waterfowl can cause elevated fecal coliform densities in the water column. From the data obtained in this study, it is possible to predict the microbial impact of migratory waterfowl upon aquatic roosting sites.  相似文献

An investigation of mercury-resistant bacteria was undertaken to determine their role in the accumulation of mercury in a simplified food chain. Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) were maintained in a closed system, sealed aquarium with stirred, aerated water containing 10 mug of 203-HgCl2 per liter. Uptake of 203-Hg by oysters held under control conditions was compared with that of 203-Hg uptake by oysters under similar conditions except that mercury-accumulating and mercury-metabolizing species of Pseudomonas, isolated from Chesapeake Bay, were added to the experimental oysters. After incubation for 4 days, the major portion ofthe 203-Hg in the water column was found to be associated with the microparticulate fraction, corresponding to a rise in total viable count. Mercury accumulation in the oysters was significantly higher in the gill and visceral tissue than other tissue. Mercury concentrations were 200 times greater in tissue fractions of oysters dosed with mercury-metabolizing bacteria compared with the oysters held under control conditions without mercury-metabolizing bacteria.  相似文献

SeveralVibrio spp. cause disease in marine fish populations, both wild and cultured. The most common disease, vibriosis, is caused byV. anguillarum. However, increase in the intensity of mariculture, combined with continuing improvements in bacterial systematics, expands the list ofVibrio spp. that cause fish disease. In order to fully delineate the interactions of microorganisms with geological substrates, unequivocal identification of intact microbial cells within geologic samples is required without the disruption of either the rock texture or the relationship of the microorganisms to the mineral fabric. To achieve this objective we developed a protocol that enables the visualization of intact microbial cells in petrographic thin sections, avoids detaching the cells from their host mineral surfaces and avoids microbial contamination during the lapidary process. Propidium iodide and POPO-3, nucleic acid stains that specifically target double-stranded DNA and RNA were utilized for in situ visualization of cells in surface and subsurface basalts from northeastern Idaho. Additionally, examination of samples incubated with acetic acid-UL-14C via phosphor imagining facilitated the in situ visualization of 14C labeled biomass. Biomass observed was low (<10(7) cells/g). These observations indicate that the microbial distribution in these rocks exhibits a high degree of spatial heterogeneity at the sub-centimeter scale.  相似文献
