The summit of roots of various plant species may be occupied by a single, rapidly proliferating tetrahedral apical cell (as in ferns), or by a multicellular and slowly proliferating quiescent centre (as in angiosperms), or by intermediate types of cellular organizations. The present paper attempts to deduce the phylogeny of these various types of cellular patterning at the root apex.  相似文献

Roots have the ability to change the direction of their forward growth. Sometimes these directional changes are rapid, as in mutations, or they are slower, as in tropisms. The gravitational force is always present and roots have an efficient graviperception mechanism which enables them to initiate gravitropic movements. In trying to model and simulate the course of gravitropic root movements with a view to analyse the component processes, the following aspects of the plant's interaction with gravity have been considered: (1) The level of organization (organism, organ, cell) at which the movement process is expressed; (2) whether the gravity stimulation event is dynamic or static (i.e. whether or not physiologically significant displacements take place with respect to the gravity vector); (3) the sub-systems involved in movement and the processes which they regulate; (4) the mathematical characterization of the relevant sub-systems. A further allied topic is the nature of nutational movements and whether they are linked with gravitropic movements in some way. In considering how they can best be modelled, two types of nutational movements are proponed: stochastic nutation and circumnutation. Most, if not all, natural movements developed in response to static gravistimulation can be viewed as gravimorphisms. This applies at the levels of cell, organ and organism. However, when a system at any one of these levels experiences dynamic gravistimulation, because of its inherent homeostatic properties, it is induced to regenerate a state similar to that previously held. Thus, gravitropism is a regenerative gravimorphic process at the level of the organ.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to discover whether genetic manipulation of 6-phosphofructokinase [EC 2.7.1.11; PFK(ATP)] influenced the rate of respiration of tuber tissue of Solanum tuberosum L. Transgenic plants were produced that contained the coding sequence of the Escherichia coli pfkA gene linked to a patatin promoter. Expression of this chimaeric gene in tubers resulted in a 14to 21-fold increase in the maximum catalytic activity of PFK(ATP) without affecting the activities of the other glycolytic enzymes. Tubers, and aged disks of tuber tissue, from transformed plants showed no more than a 30% fall in the content of hexose 6-monophosphates; the other intermediates of glycolysis increased threeto eightfold. Fructose-2,6-bisphosphate was barely detectable in aged disks of transformed tubers. The relative rates of 14CO2 production from [1-14C]-and [6-14C]-glucose supplied to disks of transformed and control tubers were similar. Oxygen uptake and CO2 production by aged disks of transformed tubers did not differ significantly from those from control tubers. The same was true of CO2 production, in air, and in nitrogen, for tuber tissue. It is concluded that PFK(ATP) does not dominate the control of respiration in potato tubers.Abbreviations Fru2,6bisP fructose-2,6-bisphosphate - FW freshweight - GUS -glucuronidase - PFK(ATP) 6-phosphofructokinase - PFK(PPi) pyrophosphate: fructose-6-phosphate 1-phosphotransferase  相似文献

An Arabidopsis thaliana mutant that produces green seeds thatare highly insensitive to exogenous ABA, non-dormant and severelydesiccation intolerant was isolated from a population of fastneutron-irradiated seeds. Molecular and genetic analysis ofthis mutant shows that these phenotypes are caused by an internaldeletion of approximately one third of the ABI3 gene. Thereforeabi3 mutants with the above phenotypes are representative ofnull alleles at this locus. (Received December 3, 1993; Accepted January 22, 1994)  相似文献

Effect of removal of snow cover in winter was investigated in an 80-year-old sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) stand in southern Quebec. We hypothesized that winter soil frost would induce some of the decline symptoms observed in sugar maple stands in southern Quebec in the early 1980's. Snow was continuously removed from around trees for a one week (partial removal) or for a four-month period (complete removal) during the 1990–1991 winter. Foliage and soils were sampled periodically during the summer of 1991. The complete snow removal treated trees showed decreased leaf water potential and increased peroxidase activity over most of the growing season. Foliar Ca was reduced in both snow removal treatments early in the growing season while foliar N was reduced in the complete snow removal trees late in the growing season. Soil NO 3 and K+ were elevated in both snow removal treatments at various times throughout the growing season. Prolonged soil frost in a sugar maple stand can induce lower leaf water potential, higher leaf peroxidase activity and early leaf senescence during the following growing season. Soil frost may have reduced nutrient uptake without affecting significantly the leaf nutrient status.  相似文献

Red light controls cell elongation in seedlings of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in a far-red-reversible manner (Nick and Furuya, 1993, Plant Growth Regul. 12, 195–206). The role of gibberellins and microtubules in the transduction of this response was investigated in the rice cultivars Nihon Masari (japonica type) and Kasarath (indica type). The dose dependence of mesocotyl elongation on applied gibberellic acid (GA3) was shifted by red light, and this shift was reversed by far-red light. In contrast, coleoptile elongation was found to be independent of exogenous GA3. Nevertheless, it was inhibited by red light, and this inhibition was reversed by far-red light. The content of the active gibberellin species GA1 and GA4 was estimated by radio-immunoassay. In the mesocotyl, the gibberellin content per cell was found to increase after irradiation with red light, and this increase was far-red reversible. Conversely, the cellular gibberellin content in japonica-type coleoptiles did not exhibit any significant light response. Microtubules reoriented from transverse to longitudinal arrays in response to red light and this reorientation could be reversed by subsequent far-red light in both the coleoptile and the mesocotyl. This movement was accompanied by changes in cell-wall birefringence, indicating parallel reorientations of cellulose deposition. The data indicate that phytochrome regulates the sensitivity of the tissue towards gibberellins, that gibberellin synthesis is controlled in a negative-feedback loop dependent on gibberellin effectiveness, and that at least two hormone-triggered signal chains are linked to the cytoskeleton in rice.Abbreviations D darkness - FR far-red light - GA3 gibberellic acid - GC-SIM gas chromatography-selected ion monitoring - R red light This work was supported by a grant of the Human Frontier Science Organization to P.N. Acclimation to changes in the light environment was investigated in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. cv. Landsberg erecta. Plants grown under four light regimes showed differences in their development, morphology, photosynthetic performance and in the composition of the photosynthetic apparatus. Plants grown under high light showed higher maximum rates of oxygen evolution and lower levels of light-harvesting complexes than their low light-grown counterparts; plants transferred to low light showed rapid changes in maximum photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll-a/b ratio as they became acclimated to the new environment. In contrast, plants grown under lights of differing spectral quality showed significant differences in the ratio of photosystem II to photosystem I. These changes are consistent with a model in which photosynthetic metabolism provides signals which regulate the composition of the thylakoid membrane.Abbreviations Aac1 gene encoding actin - Chl chlorophyll - F far-red-enriched light (R:FR = 0.72) - FR far-red light - H high light (400 mol · m–2 · s–1) - L low light (100 ml · m–2 · s–1) - LHCII light-harvesting complex of PSII - Lhcb genes encoding the proteins of LHCII - R red light - Rbcs genes encoding the small subunit of Rubisco - Rubisco ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase - W white light (R:FR = 1.40) This work was supported by Natural Environment Research Council Grant No. GR3/7571A. Summary Birds show a typical daily pattern of heavy morning and secondary afternoon feeding. We investigate the pattern of foraging by a bird that results in the lowest long-term rate of mortality. We assume the following: mortality is the sum of starvation and predation. The bird is characterized by two state variables, its energy reserves and the amount of food in its stomach. Starvation occurs during the day if the bird's reserves fall to zero. The bird starves during the night if the total energy stored in reserves and the stomach is less than a critical amount. The probability that the bird is killed by a predator is higher if the bird is foraging than if it is resting. Furthermore, the predation risk while foraging increases with the bird's mass. From these assumptions, we use dynamic programming techniques to find the daily foraging routine that minimizes mortality. The principal results are (1) Variability in food finding leads to routines with feeding concentrated early in the day, (2) digestive constraints cause feeding to be spread more evenly through the day, (3) even under fairly severe digestive constraints, the stomach is generally not full and (4) optimal fat reserve levels are higher in more variable environments and under digestive constraints. This model suggests that the characteristic daily feeding pattern of small birds is not due to digestive constraints but is greatly influenced by environmental variability.  相似文献

We previously identified three well-dispersed mutations, E978-K, F989-L and D1009-R within the haemolysin A signal region, located at positions –46, –35 and –15, with respect to the C-terminus, respectively. Each mutation reduces the efficiency of secretion two- to threefold leaving 30–45% of the wild-type activity. We have constructed by in vitro manipulations double mutants of HlyA carrying all combinations of these mutations and a triple mutant carrying all three mutations. The effects on secretion were determined and the results, including residual levels of secretion with the triple mutant of only 0.6%, compared with the wild type, indicated that these residues may interact to form a single function in the wild-type signal. To test this further, we developed a secretion competition assay in order to classify signal mutations. We demonstrated that a CIZ-HlyA fusion protein, containing the C-terminal 81 kDa of HlyA fused to virtually the whole LacZ protein, strongly inhibits the secretion of the wild-type HlyA co-expressed In the same cell. The properties of the fusion indicate that it blocks the translocator. The three mutations singly and in combinations were recombined in vitro into the 3′-end of the hybrid gene. In every case, the presence of a mutation in the secretion signal of the hybrid protein alleviated the inhibition of secretion of the co-expressed HiyA. All the mutations are therefore essentially recessive and we propose that they all affect an early function, probably recognition of the translocator, rather than a subsequent step involved in translocation or final release of the toxin to the medium. This would indicate that residues involved in recognition for steps  相似文献
