Studies on methanol-oxidizing yeasts

A series of yeast strains utilizing methanol as the only source of carbon and energy were isolated both from soil and waste waters. Growth of the yeasts was studied in a mineral medium with yeast extract at 30°C. Growth parameters, Q_{o 2} and composition of biomass were studied in the strain 11Bh producing in shaken flasks highest yields of biomass. The biomass was found to contain 44% of crude proteins, 2% esterified fatty acids, 3% non-esterified fatty acids, 6% RNA and 0.25% DNA. Amino acid analysis revealed a high content of essential amino acids, lysine, leucine, valine and threonine in particular.     

Effects of potassium,lanthanum and black widow spider venom on miniature synaptic potentials in theTorpedo electroplax

Summary Using a method of focal drug application it is demonstrated that high potassium concentration, lanthanum, and black widow spider venom accelerate spontaneous transmitter release inTorpedo electric tissue.This investigation was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Sonderforschungsbereich 138). La forme scléronodulaire de la maladie de Hodgkin: expérience du CHU de Sherbrooke

Scleronodular type of Hodgkin''s disease: experience at the Centre hospitalier universitaire de SherbrookeThe nodular sclerosis type of Hodgkin''s disease appears to be a distinct clinical entity. However, the incidence, the initial localization of the tumour and the survival of the patients are variable. The present study was carried out on a group of 17 patients, all French Canadians living in the province of Quebec, from a total of 31 with Hodgkin''s disease, an incidence of 55%. There were more males (10) than females (7). The mean age of the group was 37 years, but that of the females was lower than that of the males. The mediastinum was involved at the onset in 47% of the patients. The initial staging (according to the classification of Rye) in 76% of the patients was I or II.Four patients showed disease below the diaphragm. The lungs were infiltrated three times, the spleen six times, and the liver five times. The duration of survival of the 17 patients was twice that of the patients with the three other types of the disease.     

The effect of energization on the apparent Michaelis–Menten constant for oxyge in nmitochondrial respiration

Lineweaver-Burk plots of 1/v against 1/[O(2)] for rat liver mitochondrial respiration with succinate or ascorbate+NNN'N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine as substrates are non-linear. In state 3u (uncoupled by trifluoromethoxycarbonyl cyanide phenylhydrazone) such plots tend to be concave upward, whereas in state 4 (energized) the plots were concave downward. The apparent K(m) for oxygen is larger in state 4 than in state 3u, despite the higher turnover in the latter system. It is postulated that at least one reversible reaction occurs between cytochrome c and cytochrome c oxidase, whose rate is increased on energization (reversed electron transfer); a model including such a reaction is proposed which accounts semiquantitatively for the observations.     

Effect of arterial perfusion on net water flux and active sodium transport across the isolated skin ofBufo bufo bufo (L.)

Summary A method has been developed which allows perfusion of the blood vessels in isolated pelvic skins ofB. bufo. The effect of various doses of vasotocin (AVT) on net water flux (inside medium 220 mOsM, outside medium 11 mOsM) and active sodium transport were compared in perfused and unperfused skins. The unstimulated water flux (Fig. 3) and the active sodium transport (Fig. 6) were unaffected by perfusion. The threshold for stimulation of water flux was between 0.01 and 0.1 nM vasotocin in perfused skins and between 0.1 and 1 nM in unperfused skins. The threshold for stimulation of active sodium transport was between 0.005 and 0.05 nM vasotocin in perfused skins and between 0.05 and 0.5 nM in unperfused skins. The maximal water flux through perfused skins, 4 l/cm²min, was obtained at 1 nM vasotocin. At 10 nM vasotocin the water flux was only 0.7 l/cm²min in unperfused skins. The maximal active sodium transport was approximately of the same magnitude in perfused and unperfused skins, at 0.5 mM and at 50 nM, respectively.

Summary This article describes two forms of oak forests occurring in the Mecsek-Mts. in Hungary: the Cotino-Quercetum pubescentis mecsekense, and the Orno-Quercetum mecsekense.     

Underground dry weight in the grassland communities ofArrhenatheretum elatioris alopecuretosum pratensis R. Tx. 1937 andMesobrometum erecti stipetosum Vicherek 1960

The meadow plant communities,Arrhenatheretum elatioris alopecuretosum pratensis R. Tx. 1937 andMesobrometum erecti stipetosum Vicherek 1960, were chosen for investigations of the underground plant parts. Apparent differences in underground dry weight and its seasonal changes in both the communities were observed. Differences in the soil environment in different periods of the year are reflected in the character of time changes in underground dry weight. The soil environment affects not only the total underground biomass and their changes in time, but also the activity of soil microflora and, consequently, the decomposition rate of dead underground plant parts.
