To investigate the feasibility of a behaviorally oriented intervention program with atopic dermatitis, 12 patients were exposed to a fixed sequence of treatment phases including a no-treatment baseline phase, a phase incorporating nonspecific treatment factors, and a phase involving frontal electromyographic (EMG) feedback and relaxation instructions. Photographic analyses of involved skin areas revealed significant remission of dermatological problems across the entire program, although significant changes could not be attributable to any specific phase. Ratings of itching level decreased within but not across treatment sessions, and variable correlations across subjects were found between frontal EMG and itching level. MMPI results from the dermatitis subjects were within normal limits. Overall, the results provided mixed support for the hypothesis that atopic dermatitis may be amenable to intervention through behaviorally oriented treatment procedures. 相似文献

A major challenge in controlling overabundant wildlife is monitoring their populations, particularly as they decline to very low density. Camera traps and wildlife detector dogs are increasingly being used for this purpose. We compared the cost-effectiveness of these two approaches for detecting feral cats (Felis catus) on two pastoral properties in Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand. One property was subject to intensive pest removal, while the other had no recent history of pest control. Camera traps and wildlife detector dogs detected cats at similar rates at both sites. The operating costs of each method were also comparable. We identify a number of advantages and disadvantages of each technique, and suggest priorities for further research. 相似文献

Complement proteins in blood recognize charged particles. The anionic phospholipid (aPL) cardiolipin binds both complement proteins C1q and factor H. C1q is an activator of the complement classical pathway, while factor H is an inhibitor of the alternative pathway. To examine opposing effects of C1q and factor H on complement activation by aPL, we surveyed C1q and factor H binding, and complement activation by aPL, either coated on microtitre plates or in liposomes. Both C1q and factor H bound to all aPL tested, and competed directly with each other for binding. All the aPL activated the complement classical pathway, but negligibly the alternative pathway, consistent with accepted roles of C1q and factor H. However, in this system, factor H, by competing directly with C1q for binding to aPL, acts as a direct regulator of the complement classical pathway. This regulatory mechanism is distinct from its action on the alternative pathway. Regulation of classical pathway activation by factor H was confirmed by measuring C4 activation by aPL in human sera in which the C1q:factor H molar ratio was adjusted over a wide range. Thus factor H, which is regarded as a down-regulator only of the alternative pathway, has a distinct role in downregulating activation of the classical complement pathway by aPL. A factor H homologue, β2-glycoprotein-1, also strongly inhibits C1q binding to cardiolipin. Recombinant globular domains of C1q A, B and C chains bound aPL similarly to native C1q, confirming that C1q binds aPL via its globular heads. 相似文献

Methylene blue was synthesized in 1877 and soon found application in medicine, staining for microscopy and as an industrial dye and pigment. An enormous literature has accumulated since its introduction. Early on, it was known that methylene blue could be degraded easily by demethylation; consequently, the purity of commercial samples often was low. Therefore, demethylation products, such as azures and methylene violet, also are considered here. The guanylate cyclase reaction was studied to determine the identity of the product(s) formed other than guanosine-3′,5′-monophosphate (cyclic GMP). Partially purified guanylate cyclase preparations from rat lung catalyzed the formation of nearly equal amounts of PP1 and of cyclic GMP from GTP. Column chromatography of the enzyme preparation on DEAE-Sephadex or Bio-Gel A-5m failed to separate the enzyme(s) involved in formation of cyclic GMP and of PP1. Nucleotide inhibitors of cyclic GMP formation also inhibited PP1 formation, and Ca2+, a stimulant of cyclic GMP formation in the presence of Mn2+, also stimulated PP1 formation. Detectable PP1 formation was not observed when ATP was present instead of GTP.The results show that guanylate cyclase, in vitro, catalyzes the formation of pyrophosphate from GTP concomitant with the synthesis of cyclic GMP. 相似文献

Effects of hyperthermia on maturing oocytes of a random-bred stock of mice were investigated to determine if those effects might in part be responsible for the decreased reproductive efficiency observed in animals during periods of high ambient temperatures. Oocytes were collected from virgin mice
following synchronization of ovulation with Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin (PMSG) and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). Stressed animals were exposed to hyperthermic conditions (35 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 3% relative humidity (RH)) immediately following the injection of HCG until the time of oocyte recovery. Prior to heat exposure all animals were maintained at control conditions of 21 ± 2 °C and 65 ± 5% RH. Meiotic maturation was disrupted in a significant proportion (>25%) of oocytes from stressed animals. Apparent disruption of the spindle mechanism resulted in the cessation of the meiotic process at metaphase I in 12.28% of the oocytes from heat-stressed mice with 4.87% oocytes exhibiting subnucalei. Other nuclear forms presumed to be non-viable occurred in an additional 8.58% of the oocytes. Two oocytes exhibited retained polar body chromatin and several oocytes at metaphase II exhibited atypical configuration. The remaining oocytes were in normal metaphase II configuration. 相似文献
