Based on pure culture studies and DNA phylogenetic analyses, black yeasts (Chaetothyriales, Ascomycota) are shown to be widely distributed and important components of numerous plant-ant-fungus networks, independently acquired by several ant lineages in the Old and New World. Data from ITS and LSU nu rDNA demonstrate that a high biodiversity of fungal species is involved. There are two common ant-fungus symbioses involving black yeasts: (1) on the carton walls of ant nests and galleries, and (2) the fungal mats growing within non-pathogenic naturally hollow structures (so-called domatia) provided by myrmecophytic plants as nesting space for ants (ant-plant symbiosis). Most carton- and domatia-inhabiting fungi stem from different phylogenetic lineages within Chaetothyriales, and almost all of the fungi isolated are still undescribed. Despite being closely related, carton and domatia fungi are shown to differ markedly in their morphology and ecology, indicating that they play different roles in these associations. The carton fungi appear to improve the stability of the carton, and several species are commonly observed to co-occur on the same carton. Carton fungi commonly have dark-walled monilioid hyphae, colouring the carton blackish and apparently preventing other fungi from invading the carton. Despite the simultaneous presence of usually several species of fungi, forming complex associations on the carton, little?overlap is observed between carton fungi from different ant species, even those that co-occur in nature, indicating at least some host specificity of fungi. Most fungi present on carton belong to Chaetothyriales, but in a few samples, Capnodiales are also an important component. Carton fungi are difficult to assign to anamorph genera, as most lack conidiation. The domatia fungi are more specific. In domatia, usually only one or two fungal species co-occur, producing a dense layer on living host plant tissue in domatia. They have hyaline or light brown thin-walled hyphae, and are commonly sporulating. In both carton and domatia, the fungal species seem to be specific to each ant-plant symbiosis. Representative examples of carton and domatia ant-fungus symbioses are illustrated. We discuss hypotheses on the ecological significance of the Chaetothyriales associated with ants.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Plant defence traits against herbivores incur production costs that are usually difficult to measure. However, estimating these costs is a prerequisite for characterizing the plant defence strategy as a whole. Myrmecophytes are plants that provide symbiotic ants with specialized nesting cavities, called domatia, in exchange for protection against herbivores. In the particular case of stem domatia, production of extra wood seems to be the only associated cost, making this indirect defence trait a particularly suitable model for estimating the cost of defence.

Methods

Measurements were made of growth pattern and cumulative production cost of domatia over secondary growth in the myrmecophyte Leonardoxa africana subsp. africana, whose internodes display both a solid basal segment and a hollow distal part (the domatium), thus allowing paired comparison of investment in wood.

Key Results

Previous studies showed that ‘overconstruction’ of the hollow part of internodes during primary growth is needed for mechanical support. In this study, it is shown that the relationship between the woody cross-sectional area of the solid and hollow parts of internodes is negatively allometric at the beginning of secondary growth and nearly isometric later on. Thus, in hollow stems, the first phase of slow secondary growth compensates for the ‘overconstruction’ of the ring of wood during primary growth. Moreover, the cumulative production cost of a domatium (estimated as the additional volume of wood required for a hollow stem compared with a solid one) is very high at the beginning of secondary growth and then quickly tends to zero.

Conclusions

Making domatia incurs high costs early in ontogeny, costs that are then amortized later in development of stems and of individual plants. Characterizing ontogenetic variation of the net cost of this peculiar defence mechanism will help us build more accurate theoretical models of resource allocation in myrmecophytes.  相似文献

The little fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata, is native to Central America, but has been introduced into many parts of the world. We examined the current distribution of W. auropunctata in Cameroon, tested for aggression between workers from different parts of the country, and examined the genotypes of workers, queens, and males to evaluate the mating system. We found W. auropunctata at 36 sites in three provinces (Centre, East, and South). We found W. auropunctata only in human-disturbed habitats. Its spread appears to be primarily human mediated. Aggressive behaviour was almost non-existent between workers from different sites, indicating that there is only one supercolony in Cameroon. Our genetic analysis found that only one male/female pair of clones was introduced into Cameroon, probably from Gabon. No new male clonal lineage was identified, whereas new sexually derived female clonal lineages were noted. Apart from the genotype of the founding queen, which was well distributed but generally not dominant, a new clonal queen genotype emerged and was both omnipresent and dominant at most sites. These results may be useful in the development of management strategies.  相似文献

Coronary sinus catecholamine overflow was measured in open-chest dogs, anesthetized with sodium thiopental and alpha-chloralose, during left sympathetic stimulation. Uniform ventricular tachycardias were induced in 9 out of 16 dogs during either left stellate ganglion or left ventrolateral cardiac nerve stimulations. Significant increases in norepinephrine (8.1 ng/mL, plasma) and epinephrine (0.19 ng/mL, plasma) overflows were obtained after 30 and 90 s of stimulation, respectively. Maximum norepinephrine overflow was significantly higher in dogs with ventricular tachycardia than in those without it (16.0 vs. 7.4 ng/mL, p less than 0.05). This suggests that the induction of ventricular tachycardia in the normal myocardium is related to the amount of local secretion of norepinephrine during nerve stimulation.  相似文献

With the use of circulating norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) levels, the sympathoadrenal activity as well as its local modulation by adrenoceptors were studied in normotensive (NT) and DOCA-salt hypertensive (HT) rats. In anesthetized hypertensive rats, plasma NE levels were higher, whereas in conscious animals both NE and E levels were found to be increased, suggesting an increased basal sympathoadrenal tone in these animals. The finding of a close correlation between blood pressure levels and NE levels suggests that the elevation of blood pressure may be linked to sympathetic system activity in this experimental model of hypertension. The reactivity of the sympathoadrenal system was also found to be increased in DOCA HT rats. Following a bilateral carotid occlusion of 1 min, which specifically activates the adrenal medulla, the elevation of E levels was found to be potentiated in intact or vagotomized HT rats. Moreover, in response to prolonged or acute hypotension in anesthetized and conscious animals, the elevation in plasma NE and E levels was found to be markedly potentiated in DOCA HT rats. The local modulating adrenoceptor-mediated mechanisms of the sympathoadrenal system appeared to be altered in this model of hypertension. Although it was possible to demonstrate that the E response to carotid occlusion can be greatly potentiated by administration of an alpha2-antagonist (yohimbine) and completely abolished by an alpha2-agonist (clonidine) in NT rats, the E response was found to be unaffected by the same treatments in HT rats, suggesting a reduced sensitivity in the alpha2-mediated inhibitory modulation of the adrenal medulla. Moreover, the acute treatment with a beta-blocker (sotalol) lowered circulating NE levels and blood pressure only in HT rats, suggesting the possibility of a more sensitive beta-receptor-mediated presynaptic facilitatory mechanism on sympathetic fibers of these animals. Finally, it was observed that the functional balance which exists between the activities of sympathetic fibers and the adrenal medulla in normotensive animals appears to be impaired in DOCA HT rats. In conclusion, the present studies suggest that the increased sympathoadrenal tone and reactivity may be due, in part, to a variety of dysfunctions in local adrenoceptor modulatory mechanisms of the sympathoadrenal system in DOCA hypertensive rats.  相似文献

The adrenal nerve of anaesthetized and vagotomized dogs was electrically stimulated (10 V pulses of 2 ms duration for 10 min) at frequencies of 1, 3, 10, and 25 Hz. There was a correlation between the frequency of stimulation and the plasma concentrations of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the adrenal vein, mainly after the 1st min of stimulation and the maximal concentration was reached sooner with higher frequencies of stimulation. Moreover, the relative percentage of catecholamines released in response to the electrical stimulation was not changed by the frequency of stimulation. To test the hypothesis that a local negative feedback mechanism mediated by alpha 2-adrenoceptors exists in the adrenal medulla, the effects of the systemic administration of clonidine (alpha 2-antagonist) on the concentrations of catecholamines in the adrenal vein were evaluated during the electrical stimulation of the adrenal nerve (5 V pulses of 2 ms duration for 3 min) at 3 Hz. Moreover, the effects of the systemic injections of more specific alpha 2-agonist and antagonist (oxymetazoline and idazoxan) were tested on the release of catecholamines in the adrenal vein in response to electrical stimulation of the splanchnic nerve at 1 and 3 Hz frequencies. The injection of 0.5 mg/kg of yohimbine caused a significant increase in the concentrations of epinephrine and norepinephrine in the adrenal vein induced by the electrical stimulation of the adrenal nerve and the injection of 15 micrograms/kg of clonidine had no effects.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Effect of sotalol (STL) was compared with that of (+/-)-propranolol, (+)-propranolol (PPL), and acebutolol (ABL) on noradrenaline (NA) release as measured in coronary sinus (CS) blood during postganglionic stimulation (2 Hz, 30 s) of the left cardiac sympathetic nerves in anesthetized dogs. In control dogs receiving saline, increasing responses of CS-NA concentration, mean CS blood flow, and CS-NA output to repetitive stimulation were relatively stable throughout a given experimental period. Both STL (1,2.5, and 5 mg/kg, i.v.) and (+/-)-PPL (0.5 and 2.5 mg/kg, i.v.) diminished the increased CS-NA concentration by approximately 35 (P less than 0.05) to 60% (P less than 0.01) in a dose-dependent fashion. However, (+)-PPL (0.02-2.5 mg/kg, i.v.) and ABL (0.5-5 mg/kg, i.v.) did not significantly alter the increasing response of CS-NA concentration upon stimulation. STL, (+/-)-PPL, and ABL markedly inhibited the CS blood flow response to stimulation at all doses tested, while (+)-PPL did not significantly diminish the flow response even at the highest dose tested. Consequently, CS-NA output decreased significantly (p less than 0.01) in the presence of STL, (+/-)-PPL, and ABL at all doses tested but not with (+)-PPL at any dose tested. The inhibitory effect of STL and (+/-)-PPL on the increasing response of CS-NA concentration upon stimulation could be related to their beta-blocking effect, which exerts presumably on postulated presynaptic beta-adrenoceptors, as (+)-PPL did not at all diminish the response.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The present study in dogs indicates that the peripheral sympathetic fibers develop mostly after birth and reach a full maturity at about 2 months of life. The norepinephrine content of the heart, spleen, intestine, salivary glands, and adrenal glands increased from birth to 56 days of age. In contrast, the content of the stellate ganglia decreased during this period. In most of the organs studied, the uptake of [3H] norepinephrine developed in parallel with the norepinephrine content, except in the right atrium and salivary glands where it was fully developed soon after birth. During development, the systemic blood pressure increased from 40 to 100 mm Hg. Bilateral adrenal vessel clamping failed to induce a fall in blood pressure in growing dogs which indicates that the adrenal medulla or the baroreceptors did not fully compensate for the lack of peripheral sympathetic fibers and for the lower blood pressure in newborn animals. Although cardiac norepinephrine content was still very low in 10-day-old animals, cardiovascular responses to direct and reflex sympathetic stimulation were similar to those observed in 56-day-old animals. These results indicate that the sympathetic nervous system becomes functional before the fibers reach their full maturity.  相似文献
