Influence of temperature on the secretion of insulin and glucagon induced by stimulation of cholinergic receptors in the presence of glucose]

In the presence of a glucose concentration of 1.5 g/1 the secretion of insulin from the isolated perfused rat pancreas is clearly weaker at 28 degrees C than at 37.5 degrees C. In response to cholinergic stimulation, the absolute increase of insulin secretion rate is less at 28 degrees C than at 37.5 degrees C. However, when evaluated in percentage in relation to the baseline value, this increase is more important at the lower temperature. As to glucagon secretion, lowering of the temperature from 37.5 degrees C to 28 degrees C modifies neither this secretion in the presence of glucose alone, nor the increased secretion provoked by the cholinergic stimulation.

According to the ministerial order of May 15th, 2006 (transposition of the EURATOM directive 96/29 from May 13th, 1996), each person in charge of a medical institution is compelled to classify the working areas dealing with sources of ionizing radiation. The approach to the delineation of radiological areas should appear in an internal document combining the analysis of heath risks. Without waiting for the publication of the official guidelines as announced in the notice DGT/ASN no. 1 of January 18th, 2008 and in accordance with the above mentioned order, we have already formalized the different steps towards a zoning in the new nuclear medicine department in the Military Hospital Ste Anne of Toulon by using a detailed methodology to measure exposition and contamination levels. The methodology is largely based on measurements and consideration of normal envelopes. Analysis of integrated doses over an hour in a room can ultimately determine radiological areas. We apply the new recommended values to define the different classified zones according to their specificity and discuss this new way of assessment of exposure risks as well as the consequences on the different staff categories concerned.

This paper summarizes and clarifies the clinician's reasoning in front of a lesion of the musculoskeletal system and his appeal to the examinations of imaging and to his choices. It proposes an analysis of the criteria of choice of bone scanning in this arsenal of exploration. It details the keys of the dialogue between the clinician and the nuclear physician: firstly, the clinician determines the elements of his request and its areas of doubt and uncertainty, and his diagnosis of probability and, secondly, the nuclear physician adapts the nature of the examination according to the problem posed.

The three functional domains of the upper canines of Dryopithecus from Spain are analysed through microscopic examination. Evidence is presented that shows a food choice in concordance with open woodland habitat.     

Enhancement of insulin release and islet cell calcium content by an acyl-amino-alkyl benzoic acid derivative, HB 699

HB 699, a hypoglycaemic agent which lacks the structural requirements regarded as essential for the insulin releasing action of the sulfonamide group, was studied in isolated rat islets and compared with tolbutamide. In the presence of 8.3 mM glucose for long exposure (24 h) both substances induced an increase of insulin release without altering the islet insulin content. After preloading of the islets to isotopic equilibrium with 45Ca++ (24 h), HB 699 and tolbutamide induced a significant increase in total exchangeable calcium content parallelled by an increase in insulin release. Both effects could be suppressed by verapamil, a blocker of voltage-sensitive Ca++ channels. These results indicate that HB 699, like tolbutamide, stimulates insulin release by increasing Ca++ uptake by the B cells.

Skeletal scintigraphy is a precious tool in paediatric hospital practice. Its main indications concern the early diagnosis of bone and joint infections, suspicions of bone fracture with normal initial X-ray findings and the detection of bone metastases in the case of bone tumours. We here review a few typical and less typical aspects encountered in our daily practice.

Lowering the temperature from 37.5 degrees C to 28 degrees C does not alter the glucagon secretion by the isolated perfused rat pancreas in response to different glucose concentrations (0 g/l 1.5 g/l, 3 g/l and 5 g/l).
