Background  

The major lineages of eusocial insects, the ants, termites, stingless bees, honeybees and vespid wasps, all have ancient origins (≥ 65 mya) with no reversions to solitary behaviour. This has prompted the notion of a 'point of no return' whereby the evolutionary elaboration and integration of behavioural, genetic and morphological traits over a very long period of time leads to a situation where reversion to solitary living is no longer an evolutionary option.  相似文献

Rat hepatocytes were incubated in monolayer culture, under serum free conditions, for 8 h. Glucagon (10 nM), 8-(4-chlorophenylthio)adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (100 microM) and dexamethasone (100 nM) increased the activity of phosphatidate phosphohydrolase by approx. 2-, 3.6- and 3.3-fold, respectively. Spermine alone had no significant effect. Spermine (2.5 mM) almost completely inhibited the glucagon induced increase in phosphohydrolase activity. It only partially inhibited the dexamethasone and cyclic AMP mediated inductions. Spermidine had no significant effect in this respect. The results are discussed in relation to the known effects of polyamines on glycerolipid synthesis, in particular, and on intermediary metabolism.  相似文献

Sin3a is the central scaffold protein of the prototypical Hdac1/2 chromatin repressor complex, crucially required during early embryonic development for the growth of pluripotent cells of the inner cell mass. Here, we compare the composition of the Sin3a‐Hdac complex between pluripotent embryonic stem (ES) and differentiated cells by establishing a method that couples two independent endogenous immunoprecipitations with quantitative mass spectrometry. We define the precise composition of the Sin3a complex in multiple cell types and identify the Fam60a subunit as a key defining feature of a variant Sin3a complex present in ES cells, which also contains Ogt and Tet1. Fam60a binds on H3K4me3‐positive promoters in ES cells, together with Ogt, Tet1 and Sin3a, and is essential to maintain the complex on chromatin. Finally, we show that depletion of Fam60a phenocopies the loss of Sin3a, leading to reduced proliferation, an extended G1‐phase and the deregulation of lineage genes. Taken together, Fam60a is an essential core subunit of a variant Sin3a complex in ES cells that is required to promote rapid proliferation and prevent unscheduled differentiation.  相似文献

Biodiversity is changing on both global and local scales, motivating research to understand the consequences of these changes for how communities and ecosystems function. Here, we explore the role of life history strategies in mediating biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In particular, we evaluate how the composition, biomass (% cover), and richness of perennial (persistence ≥ 1 year) and ephemeral (persistence < 1 year) species change along a gradient of increasing seaweed species richness on a rocky shoreline. We show that the majority of biomass is comprised of perennial species, especially where overall richness is low, whereas the majority of species are ephemeral, especially where overall richness is high. We then present and discuss the results of an 18‐month field manipulation quantifying the factorial effects of tidal elevation, wave exposure, herbivore removals, thermal and desiccation stress amelioration, and nutrient additions on perennial versus ephemeral species. In particular, the diversity of ephemeral species was strongly affected, relative to perennial species, by tidal elevation, wave exposure, and herbivory; herbivores reduced diversity of ephemeral species relative to perennials. Relative to perennial cover, ephemeral cover was greater higher on the shore, in more wave‐exposed habitats, and where herbivores were removed, plots were unscreened, and/or nutrients were added. Thus, perennials and ephemerals responded differently to environmental context and experimental manipulation. We compared nitrate uptake and photosynthesis rates of ephemeral and perennial species and found that maximum nitrate uptake and photosynthesis rates of ephemerals were twice as high as those of perennials. These results highlight the disproportionate roles that ephemeral species play in mediating ecosystem‐level processes. In combination with our comparisons of the diversity and cover of perennial and ephemeral species along a biodiversity gradient, these results demonstrate the utility of incorporating life history traits into our efforts to understand the functional consequences of biodiversity change.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Coronary stents have been used with increasing frequency and in increasingly complex coronary disease. A new 316 LVM stainless steel coronary stent, the R Stent, has been designed to provide maximum flexibility for tracking and high radial strength post-deployment. PURPOSE: To assess the clinical feasibility of the R Stent in a tertiary referral population of patients with coronary heart disease. Specific objectives are to assess the R Stent's deployment success, angiographic and procedural success (<20% residual stenosis and >TIMI 2 flow), safety (absence of complications), and 30-day clinical success (angiographic/procedural success plus no major adverse coronary events). METHODS: Between April and November 1998, stent deployment was attempted in 27 patients with stable (46%) or unstable (54%) angina pectoris who qualified for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Eighty per cent of patients had a pre-existing history of myocardial infarction, coronary bypass surgery or percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, and several of the lesions were anatomically complex (totally occluded, n 32; thrombus present, n 32; heavily calcified, n 33; ostial, n 31; >20 mm long, n 39; angulation >45 degrees, n 37). Lesions in aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts were excluded. Adjunctive medical management included intraprocedural aspirin and heparin and post-procedural aspirin and ticlopidine. After deployment, patients were followed up in the hospital and at 30 days post procedure. RESULTS: Stent deployment was achieved in 32 of 33 attempts (26 of 27 patients). There was one deployment failure in a long, calcified ostial and proximal left coronary lesion. In the 26 successful deployments, TIMI 3 flow was achieved. One other patient experienced a painless increase in creatine kinase to 375 (CK-MB of 59) at 12 h without ECG changes. At 30 days, there were no deaths, no myocardial infarctions, no subacute thromboses, no repeat interventions, no bypass surgeries and no bleeding complications. Only the patient with post-procedural CK-MB elevation experience recurrence of CCS class 2 angina within the 30 days. CONCLUSION: The R Stent is a promising new device for the treatment of complex coronary heart disease. A larger, more broadly-based study is warranted.  相似文献
