The acclimation capacity of leading edge tree populations is crucially important in a warming climate. Theoretical considerations suggest that adaptation through genetic change is needed, but this may be a slow process. Both positive and catastrophic outcomes have been predicted, while empirical studies have lagged behind theory development. Here we present results of a 30‐year study of 55,000 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees, planted in 15 common gardens in three consecutive years near and beyond the present Scots pine tree line. Our results show that, contrary to earlier predictions, even long‐distance transfers to the North can be successful when soil fertility is high. This suggests that present northern populations have a very high acclimation capacity. We also found that while temperature largely controls Scots pine growth, soil nutrient availability plays an important role—in concert with interpopulation genetic variation—in Scots pine survival and fitness in tree line conditions. These results suggest that rapid range expansions and substantial growth enhancements of Scots pine are possible in fertile sites as seed production and soil nutrient mineralization are both known to increase under a warming climate. Finally, as the ontogenetic pattern of tree mortality was highly site specific and unpredictable, our results emphasize the need for long‐term field trials when searching for the factors that control fitness of trees in the variable edaphic and climatic conditions of the far North.  相似文献

We studied movements of individually marked greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus) born in the Camargue, southern France, between their two most important breeding colonies in the western Mediterranean (Camargue and Fuente de Piedra, Spain) from 1986 to 1992. The two sites differ in the frequency with which they offer suitable conditions for breeding. Flamingos have bred each year in the Camargue since 1974, but in only 12 of the past 22 years at Fuente de Piedra. Higher colony fidelity is thus expected in the less variable environment (Camargue), but if dispersal occurs competition might be an important factor causing this dispersal. Following years during which breeding birds in the Camrgue were disturbed (1988 and 1990) a higher proportion of adults changed colonies between breeding attempts (= breeding dispersal, 12.4%), while only 0.4% of flamingos breeding in the Camargue dispersed in the other years. As expected, flamingos breeding at Fuente de Piedra showed a higher rate of breeding dispersal (8.14%). No differences were observed between males and females. The importance of breeding failure as a factor causing breeding dispersal in flamingos was also confirmed by the movements of individual birds. The proportion of young flamingos that moved from their natal colony to start breeding at Fuente de Piedra (= natal dispersal) was independent of sex and age, but increased when breeding access to the Camargue colony was more difficult. However, natal dispersal was also higher in 1988 and 1990 (40.5%) than in the remaining years (1.2%), as was breeding dispersal. We discuss possible ways in which the increased natal dispersal among inexperienced birds could be linked with the increased breeding dispersal of adults in the same year.  相似文献

As part of a review of the Branchiosauridae some recently discovered specimens from the Rotliegend of the Saar-Nahe-Basin and rediscovered material from the Rotliegend of northern Saxony are described. One of the Saar-Nahe specimens is designated the neotype ofApateon pedestris Meyer 1844. This species replacesProtriton petrolei Gaudry 1875. One of the northern Saxony specimens is chosen as the lectotype ofLeptorophus tener (Schonfeld 1909). This species is redescribed. Two new species are described and named:Scboenfelderpeton prescheri n. gen. n. sp. andApateon dracyiformis n. sp. The former is remarkably differentiated in respect to its otic notch. The latter is very similar toApateon dracyi (Boy 1972). The northern Saxony locality not only contains Branchiosauridae but also the micromelerpetontidBrancbierpeton. The palaeoecology of this fauna is discussed.  相似文献

In basaltic glass from the southern Mid-Atlantic-Ridge conducive environmental conditions for biogenic weathering resulted in excellent preserved microbial morphologies on glass surfaces. The distinct glass interface and open spaces between palagonite sheet and glass indicate a dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism of glass alteration potentially supported by microorganisms. On internal fracture surfaces, branching channels with widths at 20–30 μm containing longish structures with targeted dissolution of the glass by growing tips were observed. Alteration resulted in enrichment of Fe, Ti, P, and K in palagonite in amorphous mineral forms.  相似文献

Size, space, and adaptation in some subfossil lemurs from Madagascar   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We examine several explanations for the geographic pattern of body size variation exhibited by the subfossil lemur Archaeolemur. Part and partial correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis are applied in a stepwise, hierarchical fashion to help to determine variable interdependencies. Variance in site means for body size is best explained by the richness of the plant community and by several correlated climatic variables (bioclimatic zone and mean annual rainfall). Body size differentiation in Archaeolemur roughly mirrors patterns observed among many other Malagasy lemur species and subspecies groups. This consistency alone suggests that common ecological factors have strongly affected size differentiation in lemurs, most probably (as suggested by our correlation analyses) by uniformly influencing the productivity of their niches. Smaller individuals tend to inhabit arid regions, and larger individuals tend to inhabit wetter regions. The interplay between selective differentiation and allopatric speciation appears to have yielded the concordant pattern of size variation observed in Malagasy lemurs.  相似文献

Paspalum paspalodes, an introduced grass species, and Aeluropus littoralis, an indigenous species, develop abundantly in seasonally-flooded marshes in the Camargue (Rhône Delta, France). Although they occur together in many multispecies communities, neither species occurs when the other is dominat. The cultivation of cuttings of P. paspalodes and A. littoralis in a replacement series in a combination of five proportions (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25 and 100/0) and four salinities (0,2 4, and 6 g Cl- · 1-1) gave contrasting results for the two species: (1) strong asymmetrical competition in favour of P. paspalodes at 0 g Cl- · 1-1, (2) no significant effect of salinity on the mean above-ground and underground yields per plant for A. littoralis over the range tested, (3) a major decrease in the mean above-ground and belowground yields per plant for P. paspalodes with increasing salinity, (4) a reversal of the competitive balance between the species with increasing salinity. The cultivation of cuttings at high temperatures in a greenhouse in a combination of the same five proportions at two salinities (0 and 4 g Cl- · 1-1) refuted the hypothesis that the introduced species is better adapted to summer temperatures. Because it is not salt-tolerant, P. paspalodes cannot be considered as a potentially invasive species in the Camargue. Its abundance depends on newly created and artificially maintained habitats.  相似文献

Sonic hedgehog is involved in eye field separation along the proximodistal axis. We show that Hh signalling continues to be important in defining aspects of the proximodistal axis as the optic vesicle and optic cup mature. We show that two other Hedgehog proteins, Banded hedgehog and Cephalic hedgehog, related to the mouse Indian hedgehog and Desert hedgehog, respectively, are strongly expressed in the central retinal pigment epithelium but excluded from the peripheral pigment epithelium surrounding the ciliary marginal zone. By contrast, downstream components of the Hedgehog signalling pathway, Gli2, Gli3 and X-Smoothened, are expressed in this narrow peripheral epithelium. We show that this zone contains cells that are in the proliferative state. This equivalent region in the adult mammalian eye, the pigmented ciliary epithelium, has been identified as a zone in which retinal stem cells reside. These data, combined with double labelling and the use of other retinal pigment epithelium markers, show that the retinal pigment epithelium of tadpole embryos has a molecularly distinct peripheral to central axis. In addition, Gli2, Gli3 and X-Smoothened are also expressed in the neural retina, in the most peripheral region of the ciliary marginal zone, where retinal stem cells are found in Xenopus, suggesting that they are good markers for retinal stem cells. To test the role of the Hedgehog pathway at different stages of retinogenesis, we activated the pathway by injecting a dominant-negative form of PKA or blocking it by treating embryos with cyclopamine. Embryos injected or treated at early stages display clear proximodistal defects in the retina. Interestingly, the main phenotype of embryos treated with cyclopamine at late stages is a severe defect in RPE differentiation. This study thus provides new insights into the role of Hedgehog signalling in the formation of the proximodistal axis of the eye and the differentiation of retinal pigment epithelium.  相似文献

The concurrence of fragile X and Klinefelter syndromes would be expected occasionally. Therefore, the analysis of the literature showed that the concurrence of both conditions was found at least 16 times. Among them, only seven cases were analyzed for the parental origin of the extra chromosome X, suggesting that the maternal nondisjunction was preferentially inherited. We present the third patient with the concurrence of fragile X and Klinefelter syndromes, in which the parental origin of the supernumerary chromosome X was paternal. This finding reinforces that the parent-of-origin predisposition of the concurrence of the fragile X and Klinefelter syndromes is a pure coincidence.  相似文献

In analogy to ecosystems, palaeoecosystems are defined here as the palaeocommunities of a given area and their relationships to the abiotic variables of their respective environments. They are characterized by (a) their species diversity, (b) the trophic structure of their palaeocommunities, based on their food webs, and (c), based on their detailed historical development, ecosystem functions such as stability, resilience, and succession. Due to numerous taphonomic biases, palaeocommunities can only be reconstructed from very few fossil horizons (taphocoenoses). Important conditions for such reconstructions are an uninterrupted vertical sequence of taphocoenoses with little time-averaging, excellent fossilization potential, a minimal percentage of allochthonous species in the taphocoenoses, and reliable evidence concerning the original trophic interactions between the species or trophic guilds of the palaeocommunities. The following topics are discussed in detail: Taphonomic assessment concerning fossilization potential; estimation of autochthonous vs. allochthonous components, and time-averaging; reconstruction of food webs and their interpretation in terms of extant food webs, such as web parameters; various ecosystem functions, especially successions and structuring processes, and the limited possibilities for their reconstruction.  相似文献
