Population divergence in antipredator defence and behaviour occurs rapidly and repeatedly. Genetic differences, phenotypic plasticity or parental effects may all contribute to divergence, but the relative importance of each of these mechanisms remains unknown. We exposed juveniles to parents and predators to measure how induced changes contribute to shoaling behaviour differences between two threespine stickleback species (benthics and limnetics: Gasterosteus spp). We found that limnetics increased shoaling in response to predator attacks, whereas benthics did not alter their behaviour. Care by limnetic fathers led to increased shoaling in both limnetic and benthic offspring. Shoaling helps limnetics avoid trout and avian predation; our results suggest that this adaptive behaviour is the result of a combination of paternal effects, predator-induced plasticity and genetic differences between species. These results suggest that plasticity substantially contributes to the rapid divergence in shoaling behaviour across the post-Pleistocene radiation of sticklebacks.  相似文献

A major goal of evolutionary science is to understand how biological diversity is generated and altered. Despite considerable advances, we still have limited insight into how phenotypic variation arises and is sorted by natural selection. Here we argue that an integrated view, which merges ecology, evolution and developmental biology (eco evo devo) on an equal footing, is needed to understand the multifaceted role of the environment in simultaneously determining the development of the phenotype and the nature of the selective environment, and how organisms in turn affect the environment through eco evo and eco devo feedbacks. To illustrate the usefulness of an integrated eco evo devo perspective, we connect it with the theory of resource polymorphism (i.e. the phenotypic and genetic diversification that occurs in response to variation in available resources). In so doing, we highlight fishes from recently glaciated freshwater systems as exceptionally well‐suited model systems for testing predictions of an eco evo devo framework in studies of diversification. Studies on these fishes show that intraspecific diversity can evolve rapidly, and that this process is jointly facilitated by (i) the availability of diverse environments promoting divergent natural selection; (ii) dynamic developmental processes sensitive to environmental and genetic signals; and (iii) eco evo and eco devo feedbacks influencing the selective and developmental environments of the phenotype. We highlight empirical examples and present a conceptual model for the generation of resource polymorphism – emphasizing eco evo devo, and identify current gaps in knowledge.  相似文献

Historically, six small lakes in southwestern British Columbia each contained a sympatric species pair of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). These pairs consisted of a 'benthic' and 'limnetic' species that had arisen postglacially and, in four of the lakes, independently. Sympatric sticklebacks are considered biological species because they are morphologically, ecologically and genetically distinct and because they are strongly reproductively isolated from one another. The restricted range of the species pairs places them at risk of extinction, and one of the pairs has gone extinct after the introduction of an exotic catfish. In another lake, Enos Lake, southeastern Vancouver Island, an earlier report suggested that its species pair is at risk from elevated levels of hybridization. We conducted a detailed morphological analysis, as well as genetic analysis of variation at five microsatellite loci for samples spanning a time frame of 1977 to 2002 to test the hypothesis that the pair in Enos Lake is collapsing into a hybrid swarm. Our morphological analysis showed a clear breakdown between benthics and limnetics. Bayesian model-based clustering indicated that two morphological clusters were evident in 1977 and 1988, which were replaced by 1997 by a single highly variable cluster. The most recent 2000 and 2002 samples confirm the breakdown. Microsatellite analysis corroborated the morphological results. Bayesian analyses of population structure in a sample collected in 1994 indicated two genetically distinct populations in Enos Lake, but only a single genetic population was evident in 1997, 2000, and 2002. In addition, genetic analyses of samples collected in 1997, 2000, and 2002 showed strong signals of 'hybrids'; they were genetically intermediate to parental genotypes. Our results support the idea that the Enos Lake species pair is collapsing into a hybrid swarm. Although the precise mechanism(s) responsible for elevated hybridization in the lake is unknown, the demise of the Enos Lake species pair follows the appearance of an exotic crayfish, Pascifasticus lenisculus, in the early 1990s.  相似文献

Mate recognition is critical to the maintenance of reproductiveisolation, and animals use an array of sensory modalities toidentify conspecific mates. In particular, olfactory informationcan be an important component of mate recognition systems. Weinvestigated whether odor is involved in mate recognition ina sympatric benthic and limnetic species pair of three-spinedsticklebacks (Gasterosteus spp.), for which visual cues andsignals are known to play a role in premating isolation. Weallowed gravid females of each species to choose between waterscented by a heterospecific male and water scented by a conspecificmale. Benthic females preferred the conspecific male stimuluswater significantly more often than the heterospecific malestimulus water, whereas limnetic females showed no preference. These species thus differ in their odor and may also differin their use of olfaction to recognize conspecific mates. Thesedifferences are likely a consequence of adaptation to disparateenvironments. Differences in diet, foraging mode, habitat, andparasite exposure may explain our finding that odor might bean asymmetric isolating mechanism in these sympatric sticklebackspecies.  相似文献

In total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR), the intrapulmonary venous plexus has failed to connect to the left atrium, so that the pulmonary veins drain into right atrial tributaries, frequently resulting in early postnatal circulatory distress. The Baltimore-Washington Infant Study (BWIS), a population-based exploratory case-control study of cardiovascular malformations (CVM), identified 41 cases of TAPVR during 1981-1987: 1.5% of all CVM (N = 2659), a regional prevalence of 6.8/100,000 live births. Of the TAPVR infants, 68% were diagnosed as neonates, 88% had surgery, and 51.2% were alive at 1 year of age. Noncardiac malformations were present in nine cases (22%); the male-female ratio was 0.78 (18.23). Compared with a control group representative of the birth cohort (N = 2,801), more TAPVR patients had low birthweight (less than 2,500 g: 16.2% vs. 6.9%, short gestational age (less than 38 weeks: 18.9% vs. 9.3%), and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) (26.8% vs. 5.8%). Sociodemographic findings were similar to those of controls, except that fewer TAPVR mothers received private pregnancy care (59.5% vs. 71.4%). Family history revealed no other TAPVR-affected members, but a significant linear trend of increased risk was found over the ordered malformation categories (familial noncardiac, cardiac, both). Bivariate analysis of TAPVR and exposure in life-style, hobbies, and work showed possible associations for exposure to lead (OR 2.9; 99% confidence interval [CI]: 1.2, 7.2), painting/paint stripping (OR 3.3; 99% CI: 1.3, 8.4), lead soldering (OR 13.3; 99% CI: 1.8, 99.2), and pesticides (OR 2.7; 99% CI: 1.2, 6.4). Multivariate analysis suggested an interaction between pesticide exposure and family history and, thus, a possible familial susceptibility to environmental teratogens. Although the number of TAPVR cases is small, this epidemiologic study identifies hypotheses that may be further explored in morphogenetic and epidemiology studies. Total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR) constitutes a well-defined clinical entity in which the pulmonary veins fail to enter the left atrium and instead drain into the right atrium or its systemic venous tributaries (Neill, '56; Rowe et al., '81). During intrauterine life, the malformation does not compromise the fetal circulation, since the pulmonary arterial resistance is high and the patent foramen ovale provides easy access of right atrial blood to the left side of the heart. At birth, however, the pulmonary vascular resistance begins to fall, and the presence of a severe hemodynamic disturbance becomes increasingly evident (Ferencz et al., '71).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Sequential mate choice strategies predict how females should alter their choosiness based on the availability of attractive males. There are many studies on sequential mate choice within species, but few have asked whether females apply these strategies to interactions between species and how these strategies may affect hybridization. We tested how previous interactions with conspecific and heterospecific males affect mate preference and sexual isolation in two threespine stickleback species (benthics and limnetics: Gasterosteus spp.). Consistent with previous work, we found that within species, stickleback females gauge male attractiveness relative to previously encountered males. If females extend these decision rules between species, we predicted that previous interactions with conspecifics should make heterospecifics less attractive, whereas interactions with heterospecifics should make conspecifics more attractive. However, females found heterospecifics less attractive after prior experience, largely independent of the species of male first encountered. Thus, sequential mate choice strategies are used within but not between species in sticklebacks. Further, learning from prior courtship interactions acts to enhance existing sexual isolation between species.  相似文献
