Inducible defences and the paradox of enrichment 总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
In order to evaluate the effects of inducible defences on community stability and persistence, we analyzed models of bitrophic and tritrophic food chains that incorporate consumer-induced polymorphisms. These models predict that intra-specific heterogeneity in defence levels resolves the paradox of enrichment for a range of top-down effects that affect consumer death rates and for all possible levels of primary productivity. We show analytically that this stability can be understood in terms of differences in handling times on the different prey types. Our predictions still hold when defences also affect consumer attack rates. The predicted stability occurs in both bitrophic and tritrophic food chains.
Inducible defences may promote population persistence in tritrophic food chains. Here the minimum densities of cycling populations remain bound away from zero, thus decreasing the risk of population extinctions. However, the reverse can be true for the equivalent bitrophic predator–prey model. This shows that theoretical extrapolations from simple to complex communities should be made with caution. Extracellular Matrix in Early Stages of Direct Somatic Embryogenesis in Leaves of Drosera spathulata
The growth and water relations of Paulownia fortunei in photoautotrophic cultures (nutrient medium lacking sucrose and growth regulator) with CO2 enrichment (PWAH) or without CO2 enrichment (PWAL) were compared with those in photomixotrophic shoot (PWC; 30 g dm−3 sucrose and 0.3 mg dm−3 N6-benzyladenine) and root cultures (PWR; 0.3 mg dm−3 indole-3-butyric acid). The photoautotrophic and photomixotrophic cultures were incubated under photosynthetic photon flux
125 and 60 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively. 100 % sprouting and significantly higher number of shoots (1.6) were obtained with PWAH as compared to PWAL
and PWC. PWAH and PWAL stimulated spontaneous rooting from the cut end of axillary shoots. In PWAH, 84 % of shoots rooted
with an average of 5.9 roots per shoot and 4.0 cm of root length in 21 d. Rooting of photomixotrophic shoot cultures were
stimulated by an auxin treatment. In this case, 98.3 % of shoots were rooted with an average of 4.6 roots per shoot and 1.9
cm length. A microscopic observation on leaf abaxial surface prints from photomixotrophic shoot and root cultures showed widely
open (6 – 8 μm) spherical stomata (12 – 14 μm) and from photoautotrophic cultures elliptical stomata (10 – 12 μm) with narrow
openings (3 – 4 μm). Leaves from photomixo-trophic cultures had higher stomatal index as compared to photoautotrophic cultures.
The rate of moisture loss from detached leaves was not varying significantly in different cultures.

A swine resource family was constructed at the National Institute of Animal Industry, Japan, in order to determine the genetic
regions responsible for economically important traits, including fetus development. To identify genes expressed in the early
stage of embryo development, we cataloged and mapped genes expressed in a 28-day-old normal pig embryo. In this effort, we
have mapped 64 genes, which have map information in human genome onto a swine radiation hybrid (RH) map, IMpRH. These mappings
provided additional chromosomal homologies between swine and human to improve the comparative map between the two species.
The distribution of the genes assigned to swine chromosomes are as follows: 9 genes were assigned on SSC6; 6 genes each assigned
on SSC5 and SSC14; 5 genes each assigned on SSC3, SSC4, and SSC8; 4 genes each assigned on SSC1, SSC7, SSC9, and SSC15; 3
genes each assigned on SSC2, SSC13 and SSCX; and 1 gene each assigned on SSC10, SSC11, and SSC16. Moreover, the present findings
revealed 18 new chromosomal homologies between pig and human. Briefly, SSC3 regions were indicated to correspond with HSA1
and HSA10; SSC4 with HSA6; SSC5 with HSA2, HSA15, and HSA16; SSC6 with HSA3, HSA6, and HSA20; SSC7 with HSA11; SSC8 with HSA3,
HSA6, and HSA7; SSC9 with HSA8; SSC13 with HSA1; SSC14 with HSA13; SSC15 with HSA19; SSC16 with HSA9.

Three strains of Chlorella were examined, by serological procedures for cellular antigenic differences. Antibodies produced in rabbits against, the 3 different Chlorella strains demonstrated the presence of antigens common to all 3 strains.
