Adaptive radiations are central to macroevolutionary theory. Whether triggered by acquisition of new traits or ecological opportunities arising from mass extinctions, it is debated whether adaptive radiations are marked by initial expansion of taxic diversity or of morphological disparity (the range of anatomical form). If a group rediversifies following a mass extinction, it is said to have passed through a macroevolutionary bottleneck, and the loss of taxic or phylogenetic diversity may limit the amount of morphological novelty that it can subsequently generate. Anomodont therapsids, a diverse clade of Permian and Triassic herbivorous tetrapods, passed through a bottleneck during the end-Permian mass extinction. Their taxic diversity increased during the Permian, declined significantly at the Permo–Triassic boundary and rebounded during the Middle Triassic before the clade''s final extinction at the end of the Triassic. By sharp contrast, disparity declined steadily during most of anomodont history. Our results highlight three main aspects of adaptive radiations: (i) diversity and disparity are generally decoupled; (ii) models of radiations following mass extinctions may differ from those triggered by other causes (e.g. trait acquisition); and (iii) the bottleneck caused by a mass extinction means that a clade can emerge lacking its original potential for generating morphological variety.  相似文献

Predicted future climate change will alter species' distributions as they attempt to track the most suitable 'climate window'. Climate envelope models indicate the direction of likely range changes but do not incorporate population dynamics, therefore observed responses may differ greatly from these projections. We use simulation modelling to explore the consequences of a period of environmental change for a species structured across an environmental gradient. Results indicate that a species' range may lag behind its climate envelope and demonstrate that the rate of movement of a range can accelerate during a period of climate change. We conclude that the inclusion of both population dynamics and spatial environmental variability is vital to develop models that can both predict, and be used to manage, the impact of changing climate on species' biogeography.  相似文献

Adult Leydig cells originate within the testis postnatally. Their formation is a continuous process involving gradual transformation of progenitors into the mature cell type. Despite the gradual nature of these changes, studies of proliferation, differentiation and steroidogenic function in the rat Leydig cell led to the recognition of three distinct developmental stages in the adult Leydig cell lineage: Leydig cell progenitors, immature Leydig cells and adult Leydig cells. In the first stage, Leydig cell progenitors arise from active proliferation of mesenchymal-like stem cells in the testicular interstitium during the third week of postnatal life and are recognizable by the presence of Leydig cell markers such as histochemical staining for 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) and the present of luteinizing hormone (LH) receptors. They proliferate actively and by day 28 postpartum differentiate into immature Leydig cells. In the second stage, immature Leydig cells are morphologically recognizable as Leydig cells. They have an abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum and are steroidogenically active, but primarily produce 5-reduced androgens rather than testosterone. Immature Leydig cells divide only once, giving rise to the total adult Leydig cell population. In the third and final stage, adult Leydig cells are fully differentiated, primarily produce testosterone and rarely divide. LH and androgen act together to stimulate differentiation of Leydig cell progenitors into immature Leydig cells. Preliminary data indicate that insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) acts subsequently in the transformation of immature Leydig cells into adult Leydig cells.  相似文献

Summary Most life-history theory assumes that short-term variation in an organism's environment does not affect the survivorships and fecundities of the organisms. This assumption is rarely met. Here we investigate the population and evolutionary biology of red deer,Cervus elephas, to see if relaxation of this assumption is likely to make significant differences to the predicted evolutionary biology of this species. To do this we used 21 years of data from a population of deer on Rum, Western Isles, Scotland. Population growth rates in a stochastic environment were estimated using Tuljapurkar's small noise approximation, confirmed by bootstrap simulation. Numerical differentiation was used to see if the selection pressures (i.e. sensitivities of population growth rate to changes in the vital rates) differ between the stochastic and deterministic cases. The data also allow the costs of reproduction to be estimated. These costs, incorporated as trade-offs into the sensitivity analysis, allow investigation of evolutionary benefits of different life-history tactics. Environmentally induced stochastic variation in the red deer vital rates causes a slight reduction ( 1%) in the predicted population growth rate and has little impact on the estimated selection pressures on the deer's life-history. We thus conclude that, even though density-independent stochastic effects on the population are marked, the deer's fitness is not markedly affected by these and they are adapted to the average conditions they experience. However, the selected life-history is sensitive to the trade-offs between current fecundity, survivorship and future fecundity and it is likely that the environmental variance will affect these trade-offs and, thus, affect the life-history favoured by selection. We also show that the current average life-history is non-optimal and suggest this is a result of selection pressures exerted by culling and predation, now much reduced. As the use of stochastic or deterministic methods provide similar estimates in this case, the use of the latter is justified. Thus,r (the annual per capita rate of population growth) is an appropriate measure of fitness in a population with stochastic numerical fluctuations. In a population of constant size lifetime reproductive success is the obvious measure of fitness to use.  相似文献

Abtract The use of Green's function has played a fundamental role in transport calculations for high-charge high-energy (HZE) ions. Two recent developments have greatly advanced the practical aspects of implementation of these methods. The first was the formulation of a closedform solution as a multiple fragmentation perturbation series. The second was the effective summation of the closedform solution through nonperturbative techniques. The nonperturbative methods have been recently extended to an inhomogeneous, two-layer transport media to simulate the lead scattering foil present in the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories (LBL) biomedical beam line used for cancer therapy. Such inhomogeneous codes are necessary for astronaut shielding in space. The transport codes utilize the Langley Research Center atomic and nuclear database. Transport code and database evaluation are performed by comparison with experiments performed at the LBL Bevalac facility using 670A MeV20Ne and 600A MeV56Fe ion beams. The comparison with a time-of-flight and E detector measurement for the20Ne beam and the plastic nuclear track detectors for56Fe show agreement up to 35%–40% in water and aluminium targets, respectively.Submitted paper presented at the International Symposium on Heavy Ion Research: Space, Radiation Protection and Therapy, Sophia-Antipolis, France 21–24 March 1994  相似文献
