Purpose

An estimation of the environmental impact of buildings by means of a life cycle assessment (LCA) raises uncertainty related to the parameters that are subject to major changes over longer time spans. The main aim of the present study is to evaluate the influence of modifications in the electricity mix and the production efficiency in the chosen reference year on the embodied impacts (i.e., greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions) of building materials and components and the possible impact of this on future refurbishment measures.

Methods

A new LCA methodological approach was developed and implemented that can have a significant impact on the way in which existing buildings are assessed at the end of their service lives. The electricity mixes of different reference years were collected and assessed, and the main datasets and sub-datasets were modified according to the predefined substitution criteria. The influence of the electricity-mix modification and production efficiency were illustrated on a selected existing reference building, built in 1970. The relative contribution of the electricity mix to the embodied impact of the production phase was calculated for four different electricity mixes, with this comprising the electricity mix from 1970, the current electricity mix and two possible future electricity-mix scenarios for 2050. The residual value of the building was also estimated.

Results and discussion

In the case presented, the relative share of the electricity mix GHG emission towards the total value was as high as 20% for separate building components. If this electricity mix is replaced with an electricity mix having greater environmental emissions, the relative contribution of the electricity mix to the total emissions can be even higher. When, by contrast, the modified electricity mix is almost decarbonized, the relative contribution to the total emissions may well be reduced to a point where it becomes negligible. The modification of the electricity mix can also influence the residual value of a building. In the observed case, the differences due to different electricity mixes were in the range of 10%.

Conclusions

It was found that those parameters that are subject to a major change during the reference service period of the building should be treated dynamically in order to obtain reliable results. Future research is foreseen to provide additional knowledge concerning the influence of dynamic parameters on both the use phase and the end-of-life phase of buildings, and these findings will also be important when planning future refurbishment measures.

Objective

The number of women aged 45 and older who become pregnant is increasing. The objective of this study was to estimate the risk of medical and obstetric complications among women aged 45 and older.

Methods

The Nationwide Inpatient Sample was used to identify pregnant woman during admission for delivery. Deliveries were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9-CM) codes. Using ICD-9-CM codes, pre-existing medical conditions and medical and obstetric complications were identified in women at the time of delivery and were compared for women aged 45 years and older to women under age 35. Outcomes among women aged 35–44 were also compared to women under age 35 to determine if women in this group demonstrated intermediate risk between the older and younger groups. Logistic regression analyses were used to calculate odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals for pre-existing medical conditions and medical and obstetric complications for both older groups relative to women under 35. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were also developed for outcomes at delivery among older women, while controlling for pre-existing medical conditions, multiple gestation, and insurance status, to determine the effect of age on the studied outcomes.

Results

Women aged 45 and older had higher adjusted odds for death, transfusion, myocardial infarction/ischemia, cardiac arrest, acute heart failure, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, acute renal failure, cesarean delivery, gestational diabetes, fetal demise, fetal chromosomal anomaly, and placenta previa compared to women under 35.

Conclusion

Pregnant women aged 45 and older experience significantly more medical and obstetric complications and are more likely to die at the time of a delivery than women under age 35, though the absolute risks are low and these events are rare. Further research is needed to determine what associated factors among pregnant women aged 45 and older may contribute to these findings.  相似文献

Film coating thickness of minitablets was estimated in-line during coating in a fluid-bed equipment by means of visual imaging. An existing, commercially available image acquisition system was used for image acquisition, while dedicated image analysis and data analysis methods were developed for this purpose. The methods were first tested against simulated minitablet’s images and after that examined on a laboratory-scale fluid-bed Wurster coating process. An observation window cleaning mechanism was developed for this purpose. Six batches of minitablets were coated in total, using two different dispersions, where for the second dispersion coating endpoint was determined based on the in-line measurement. Coating thickness estimates were calculated from the increasing size distributions of the minitablet’s major and minor lengths, assessed from the acquired images. Information on both the minitablet’s average band and average cap coating thicknesses was obtained. The in-line coating thickness estimates were compared to the coating thickness weight gain calculations and the optical microscope measurements as a reference method. Average band coating thickness estimate was found the most accurate in comparison to microscope measurements, with root mean square error of 1.30 μm. The window cleaning mechanism was crucial for the accuracy of the in-line measurements as was evident from the corresponding decrease of the root mean square error (9.52 μm, band coating thickness). The presented visual imaging approach exhibits accuracy of at least 2 μm and is not susceptible to coating formulation or color variations. It presents a promising alternative to other existing techniques for the in-line coating thickness estimation.  相似文献

Precursor mRNA is complexed with proteins in the cell nucleus to form heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP), and these hnRNPs are found associated in vivo with small nuclear RNPs (snRNPs) for the processing of pre-mRNA. In order to better characterize the ATP-independent initial association of U1 snRNP with hnRNP, an important early event in assembly of the spliceosome complex, we have determined some of the components essential to an in vitro reassociation of U1 snRNP with hnRNP. U1 snRNP reassociated in vitro with 40S hnRNP particles from HeLa cells and, similar to the in vivo hnRNP/U1 snRNP association, the in vitro interaction was sensitive to high salt concentrations. U1 snRNP also associated with in vitro reconstituted hnRNP in which bacteriophage MS2 RNA, which lacks introns, was used as the RNA component. Purified snRNA alone would not associate with the MS2 RNA-reconstituted hnRNP, however, intact U1 snRNP did interact with protein-free MS2 RNA. This indicates that the U1 snRNP proteins are required for the hnRNP/U1 snRNP association, but hnRNP proteins are not. Thus, the initial, ATP-independent association of U1 snRNP with hnRNP seems to be mediated by U1 snRNP protein(s) associating with hnRNA without requiring a splice-site sequence. This complex may then be further stabilized by intron-specific interactions and hnRNP proteins, as well as by other snRNPs.  相似文献
