Summary A wide-mouthed pycnometer was employed for rapid determination of plant water content. The principle involved is to weigh the pycnometer when filled with the homogenate of plant sample and water. The density of homogenate of dry plant needs to be known. Density of dry plant homogenate of a species is constant in time and with cultural treatment. Micropropagation protocol for an elite selection of Aloe vera syn A. barbadensis through enhanced axillary branching was standardized. Murashige and Skoog medium containing 1 mg l?1 BA and 0.2 mg l-1 IBA gave highest multiplication. Citric acid at 10mg l-1 and liquid medium improved the shoot multiplication. Hundred per cent microshoots produced rooted plantlets within 15 days of culture on hormone-free agar medium. Liquid medium during rooting stage decreased the number of shoots showing rooting response. Clones of the WB isolate of Giardia lamblia were exposed to cytotoxic mAb 6E7 which reacts with a 170-kDa surface Ag. Surviving progeny occurred at a frequency of about 1 in 1000 and were resistant to the effects of mAb 6E7. Analysis of progeny and clones of these progeny by surface radiolabeling, surface immunofluorescence, and Western blotting failed to detect the 170-kDa Ag. Loss of this Ag was associated with the appearance of a series of new surface Ag. A cytotoxic mAb (5C1) was produced to one of the newly appearing antigens (approximately equal to 64 kDa) and Giardia resistant to the cytotoxic effects of 5C1 isolated. Neither the approximately equal to 64 kDa nor the 170 kDa Ag were present and were replaced by a second series of new Ag. These studies clearly establish the loss and subsequent replacement of two antigenically distinct epitopes on Giardia derived from a single organism. 相似文献

Abstract. The place prioritization problem in conservation biology is that of establishing a sequentially prioritized list of places on the basis of biodiversity content. Such a list can then be used to select reserve networks that are designed to be fully representative of the biodiversity of an area as efficiently as possible (for instance, with minimum area or cost). The usual goal is the representation of all chosen biodiversity surrogates up to or beyond a required target, or to the greatest available extent. The purpose of this paper is to compare the respective performances of two place prioritization software packages, SITES and ResNet, on four datasets (distributions of termite genera in Namibia, breeding bird species in the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas, vertebrate species in Texas and flora and fauna species that are at risk in Québec), to determine their respective merits. The two software packages implement radically different algorithms: SITES is based on a simulated annealing procedure for finding (local) optima; ResNet uses an algorithm based on rarity and complementarity. This analysis indicates that the rarity‐complementarity based algorithm of ResNet surpasses the simulated annealing approach of SITES with respect to time and completeness. SITES, however, contains other features that are useful in conservation planning. Ways in which the two packages can be used together effectively are suggested. 相似文献

The left and right afferent nerves to the corpus cardiacum contain approximately 50 and 90 axons, respectively, when they enter the gland. Both bifurcate within the gland, so that four nerves leave the corpus cardiacum. These, however, contain a total of 90 axons. Of the 50 axons unaccounted for 30 are believed to terminate in the corpus cardiacum and 20 in the corpus allatum. The corpus cardiacum contains 12 intrinsic neurosecretory cells which are disposed laterally with respect to the extrinsic axons. Many of these contain neurosecretory spheres and presumably originate in the brain. The intrinsic corpus cardiacum cells also contain neurosecretory granules, and they produce short cytoplasmic processes which interdigitate with the extrinsic axons. 相似文献
