The history of evolution is a history of development from less to more complex organisms. This growth in complexity of organisms goes hand in hand with a concurrent growth in complexity of environments and of organism-environment relations. It is a concern with this latter aspect of evolutionary development that motivates the present paper. We begin by outlining a theory of organism-environment relations. We then show that the theory can be applied to a range of different sorts of cases, both biological and non-biological, in which objects are lodged or housed within specific environments, or niches. Biological science is interested in types – for example in genotypes, phenotypes, and environment types – and in regularities that can serve as the basis for the formulation of laws or general principles. Types, however, can exist only through their corresponding tokens. Our theory of token environments is meant to plug this gap and to provide a first step towards a general theory of causally relevant spatial volumes.  相似文献

BackgroundDespite several years of school-based MDA implementation, STH infections remain an important public health problem in Benin, with a country-wide prevalence of 20% in 2015. The DeWorm3 study is designed to assess the feasibility of using community-based MDA with albendazole to interrupt the transmission of STH, through a series of cluster-randomized trials in Benin, India and Malawi. We used the pre-treatment baseline survey data to describe and analyze the factors associated with STH infection in Comé, the study site of the DeWorm3 project in Benin. These data will improve understanding of the challenges that need to be addressed in order to eliminate STH as a public health problem in Benin.MethodsBetween March and April 2018, the prevalence of STH (hookworm spp., Ascaris and Trichuris trichiura) was assessed by Kato-Katz in stool samples collected from 6,153 residents in the community of Comé, Benin using a stratified random sampling procedure. A standardized survey questionnaire was used to collect information from individual households concerning factors potentially associated with the presence and intensity of STH infections in pre-school (PSAC, aged 1–4), school-aged children (SAC, aged 5–14) and adults (aged 15 and above). Multilevel mixed-effects models were used to assess associations between these factors and STH infection.ResultsThe overall prevalence of STH infection was 5.3%; 3.2% hookworm spp., 2.1% Ascaris lumbricoides and 0.1% Trichuris. Hookworm spp. were more prevalent in adults than in SAC (4.4% versus 2.0%, respectively; p = 0.0001) and PSAC (4.4% versus 1.0%, respectively; p<0.0001), whilst Ascaris lumbricoides was more prevalent in SAC than in adults (3.0% versus 1.7%, respectively; p = 0.004). Being PSAC (adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) = 0.2, p< 0.001; adjusted Infection Intensity Ratio (aIIR) = 0.1, p<0.001) or SAC (aOR = 0.5, p = 0.008; aIIR = 0.3, p = 0.01), being a female (aOR = 0.6, p = 0.004; aIIR = 0.3, p = 0.001), and having received deworming treatment the previous year (aOR = 0.4, p< 0.002; aIIR = 0.2, p<0.001) were associated with a lower prevalence and intensity of hookworm infection. Lower income (lowest quintile: aOR = 5.0, p<0.001, 2nd quintile aOR = 3.6, p = 0.001 and 3rd quintile aOR = 2.5, p = 0.02), being a farmer (aOR = 1.8, p = 0.02), medium population density (aOR = 2.6, p = 0.01), and open defecation (aOR = 0.5, p = 0.04) were associated with a higher prevalence of hookworm infection. Lower education—no education, primary or secondary school- (aIIR = 40.1, p = 0.01; aIIR = 30.9, p = 0.02; aIIR = 19.3, p = 0.04, respectively), farming (aIIR = 3.9, p = 0.002), natural flooring (aIIR = 0.2, p = 0.06), peri-urban settings (aIIR = 6.2, 95%CI 1.82–20.90, p = 0.003), and unimproved water source more than 30 minutes from the household (aIIR = 13.5, p = 0.02) were associated with a higher intensity of hookworm infection. Improved and unshared toilet was associated with lower intensity of hookworm infections (aIIR = 0.2, p = 0.01). SAC had a higher odds of Ascaris lumbricoides infection than adults (aOR = 2.0, p = 0.01) and females had a lower odds of infection (aOR = 0.5, p = 0.02).ConclusionHookworm spp. are the most prevalent STH in Comé, with a persistent reservoir in adults that is not addressed by current control measures based on school MDA. Expanding MDA to target adults and PSAC is necessary to substantially impact population prevalence, particularly for hookworm.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT03014167.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of free -amino acids and in particular of -arginine in the plasma of pregnant women affected by preeclampsia compared to healthy pregnant women in order to know if an alteration in the concentrations of these amino acids occurs in preeclamspia. Twelve pregnant women affected by preeclampsia and twelve pregnant control women, ages 28–35 years old and at the 35–36 weeks of pregnancy were studied. The blood analysis of free amino acids was carried out by using a high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) fluorometric method and OPA-NAC as derivatizing agent for the amino acid determination. In the blood of women affected by preeclampsia -arginine is markedly reduced compared to controls (about five-fold lower, P<0.01). The other amino acids also are significantly reduced, but to lesser extents (about 1.5 times lower, P<0.05). Thus, the determination of -arginine in the blood of pregnant women could potentially constitute an additional marker for the early diagnosis of preeclampsia.  相似文献

Lead (Pb) is an environmental toxicant that can induce structural and functional abnormalities of multiple organ systems, including the central nervous and the immune systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of extracellular Pb supplementation on the cellular content of the metal and on the proliferation and the survival of normal rat fibroblasts.We found that the concentration of Pb in the culture medium was 0.060 M and the normal Pb concentration in rat fibroblasts was 3.1 ± 0.1 ng/107 cells. Then we exposed the cells to increasing concentration of Pb (as Pb acetate) from 0.078–320 M. We observed a dosedependent inhibition of cell proliferation after 48 h, which was already apparent at a concentration of 0.312 M (p = 0.122) and became statistically significant for concentration higher than 0.625 M (p = 0.0003 at 5 M). Cell proliferation was completely compromised at 320 M Pb total inhibition of cell proliferation.To investigate the mechanisms of Pbmediated inhibition of cell proliferation, we evaluated the occurrence of apoptosis in the same cells and found that cytosolic DNA fragments, hallmark of apoptotic cell death, increased significantly at Pb concentrations from 2.5–10.0 M. The occurrence of apoptosis was also confirmed by FACS analysis which showed the appearance of a subdiploid peak at Pb concentrations from 5–20 M. The distribution of cells in the cell cycle showed a dosedependent accumulation of cells in the G0/G1 phase mainly compensated by a decrease in the percentage of cells in the S phase. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that induction of apoptosis contributes to the Pbinduced inhibition of cell proliferation in rat fibroblasts.  相似文献

 Tumor development and aging can each alter immune competence. The present study aimed to determine the impact of Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) presence on immune parameters of middle-aged (averaging 6.5 months) versus aged (averaging 21.3 months) mice. An age-associated decline in the CD4+ cell frequency was seen in freshly isolated spleen and lymph node cells, as well as in cultures stimulated with immobilized anti-CD3. This decline was not further exacerbated by tumor presence. What was prominently inhibited by tumor was the capacity of either splenic or lymph node CD4+ cells to become stimulated to express IFN-γ. Spleen and lymph node cultures from aged tumor-bearing mice had the lowest frequency of CD4+IFN-γ + cells and the least amount of secreted IFN-γ. CD8+ cells were not affected by aging, but tumor presence reduced the induction of CD8+IFN-γ + cells in lymph node cultures. We previously showed that LLC growth stimulates myelopoiesis, as seen by splenomegaly and the mobilization of immune inhibitory CD34+ progenitor cells. Tumor presence in middle-aged mice reduced spleen cell blastogenesis, which was mediated by CD34+ cells. Aged mice had reduced blastogenesis, and this was further reduced by presence of tumor. However, neither the age-associated immune dysfunction nor the tumor-induced immune suppression in aged mice was due to CD34+ progenitor cells. These studies show how tumor presence can further compromise the immune dysfunction that accompanies aging. In addition, they show that aging impacts on the mechanisms by which tumors inhibit T-cell capabilities, with myelopoiesis-associated CD34+ cells mediating the immune depression of middle-aged tumor-bearers and an independent mechanism being responsible for the immune depression in aged tumor-bearing mice. Congenital dyserythropoietic anemias (CDAs) constitute a rare group of inherited red-blood-cell disorders associated with dysplastic changes in late erythroid precursors. CDA type I (CDAI [MIM 224120], gene symbol CDAN1) is characterized by erythroid pathological features such as internuclear chromatin bridges, spongy heterochromatin, and invagination of the nuclear membrane, carrying cytoplasmic organelles into the nucleus. A cluster of 45 highly inbred Israeli Bedouin with CDAI enabled the mapping of the CDAN1 disease gene to a 2-Mb interval, now refined to 1.2 Mb, containing 15 candidate genes on human chromosome 15q15 (Tamary et al. 1998). After the characterization and exclusion of 13 of these genes, we identified the CDAN1 gene through 12 different mutations in 9 families with CDAI. This 28-exon gene, which is transcribed ubiquitously into 4738 nt mRNA, was reconstructed on the basis of gene prediction and homology searches. It encodes codanin-1, a putative o-glycosylated protein of 1,226 amino acids, with no obvious transmembrane domains. Codanin-1 has a 150-residue amino-terminal domain with sequence similarity to collagens and two shorter segments that show weak similarities to the microtubule-associated proteins, MAP1B (neuraxin) and synapsin. These findings, and the cellular phenotype, suggest that codanin-1 may be involved in nuclear envelope integrity, conceivably related to microtubule attachments. The specific mechanisms by which codanin-1 underlies normal erythropoiesis remain to be elucidated.  相似文献

Lizards and snakes exhibit colour variation of adaptive value for thermoregulation, camouflage, predator avoidance, sexual selection and speciation. Furcifer pardalis, the panther chameleon, is one of the most spectacular reptilian endemic species in Madagascar, with pronounced sexual dimorphism and exceptionally large intraspecific variation in male coloration. We perform here an integrative analysis of molecular phylogeography and colour variation after collecting high‐resolution colour photographs and blood samples from 324 F. pardalis individuals in locations spanning the whole species distribution. First, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence analyses uncover strong genetic structure among geographically restricted haplogroups, revealing limited gene flow among populations. Bayesian coalescent modelling suggests that most of the mitochondrial haplogroups could be considered as separate species. Second, using a supervised multiclass support vector machine approach on five anatomical components, we identify patterns in 3D colour space that efficiently predict assignment of male individuals to mitochondrial haplogroups. We converted the results of this analysis into a simple visual classification key that can assist trade managers to avoid local population overharvesting.  相似文献

Carabus (Cathoplius) aliai was described as a separate species by Escalera in 1944 but since the 1950–60s it has been considered as a subspecies of Carabus (Cathoplius) stenocephalus Lucas, 1866. This downgrading was adopted after examining only a few specimens, due to their rarity in collections. In recent years, an important population of this taxon was rediscovered in the Tan-Tan area in southern Morocco. By combining field observations with laboratory breeding experiments including hybridization trials, and through the morphological examination of a representative number of individuals, it is confirmed that Carabus aliai is indeed a valid species. Despite close geographic distribution, the morphological and biological characteristics of Carabus aliai and Carabus stenocephalus ifniensis Zarco, 1941, its northern substitutive taxon, are very different. Carabus aliai adults are characterized by a smaller size, a slender silhouette, a more brilliant aspect, a narrower pronotum, a coarser elytral sculpture, longer legs, and a wider and a little more curved apex of the median lobe of the aedeagus. Carabus aliai larvae are also characterized by a much smaller size and the Carabus aliai pupa has a narrower thoracic area and a different chaetotaxy compared to that of Carabus stenocephalus ifniensis. Contrary to this, Carabus aliai has a life cycle belonging to the annual univoltine winter semelparous type. Moreover, the duration of its development cycle is shorter. Carabus aliai is a sabulicolous steppe-wandering species with an intensive running activity, while Carabus stenocephalus ifniensis is a more sedentary taxon. Crossbreeding experiments showed a marked reproductive isolation between Carabus aliai and Carabus stenocephalus ifniensis. When F1 hybrids were crossed with one another, a very high mortality rate during embryonic, larval and pupal development was evident and no vital F2 neo-adults were obtained. Morphological and biological differences, together with the reproductive failure in Carabus aliai × Carabus stenocephalus ifniensis hybrids, clearly indicate that Carabus aliai is a separate Cathoplius species that is distributed in an area south of the Anti-Atlas chain, from Plage Blanche (Guelmim) to Lemsid and Bou Kra (south of Laâyoune). Carabus aliai is therefore both a Saharan desert endemic and an Atlantic resident. Moreover, it is the southernmost Carabus species of the western Palaearctic region.  相似文献

Light is of primary importance in structuring tropical tree communities. Light exposure at seedling and adult stages has been used to characterize the ecological profile of tropical trees, with many implications in forest management and restoration ecology. Most shade‐tolerance classification systems have been proposed based on empirical observations in a specific area and thus result in contradictions among categories assigned to a given species. In this study, we aimed to quantify the light requirements for seedling growth of a Central African timber tree, Lophira alata (Ochnaceae), taking into account effects of population origin. In two controlled experiments: a light response experiment and a comparative population experiment, conducted in southwestern Cameroon, using seeds collected from four populations (three from Cameroon and one from Gabon), we examined the quantitative responses to irradiance of seedlings. After 2 years, mortality was very low (<3%), even in extremely low irradiance. Growth and biomass allocation patterns varied in response to light, with intermediate irradiance (24–43%) providing optimal conditions. Light response differed between populations. The Boumba population in the northeastern edge of the species' distribution exhibited the highest light requirements, suggesting a local adaptation. As a result of positive growth at low irradiance and maximum growth at intermediate irradiance, we concluded that L. alata exhibits characteristics of both non‐pioneer and pioneer species. Implications of our results to propose an objective way to assign the light requirement for tropical tree species are discussed.  相似文献
