Globin mRNA from rabbit reticulocytes can be translated equally well by human ribosomes from thalassaemic and normal reticulocytes. This implies that the defect in β-thalassaemia is not in the ability of ribosomes to translate mRNA but is probably in the mRNA itself.  相似文献

Certain general features are widely recognized in evolution, one of which is the variability in the rate at which morphological characters evolve and taxa are replaced by others. Although some rate-variability in evolution no doubt arises because of different rates of ecological change, it is proposed that some of the variability also arises from developmental, rather than ecological, sources. A theory is outlined whereby early-acting genes influencing the course of development evolve more slowly, but have individually larger effects, than genes affecting development at a later stage in the life-cycle. The erratic course of morphological evolution that results is illustrated by computer simulation. It is suggested that the applicability of the theory is restricted to long-term evolution and that variability in the rate of evolution over shorter periods may be of an entirely different nature.  相似文献

The long‐term impacts of wildfires on animal populations are largely unknown. We used time‐series data based on a tracking index, from coastal NSW spanning 28 years after a wildfire, to investigate the relative influence of habitat structure, species interactions and climate on post‐fire animal population dynamics. The fire had an immediate impact on habitat structure, reducing and simplifying vegetation cover, which then underwent post‐fire successional change including an increase and plateau in tree canopy cover; an increase, stabilization and then decline in shrub cover; and an increase in ground litter cover. Population changes of different animal species were influenced by different components of successional change, but there was also evidence that species interactions were important. For example, bandicoots (Isoodon obesulus and Perameles nasuta combined) increased concurrent with an increase in shrub cover then declined at a faster rate than a direct association with senescing shrub cover would suggest, while the feral cat (Felis catus) population changed with the bandicoot population, suggesting a link between these species. Potoroos (Potorous tridactylus) increased 10 years after the fire concurrent with the closing tree canopy, but there was also evidence of a negative association with feral foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Variation in rainfall did not have significant effects on the population dynamics of any species. Our results suggest that changes in habitat structure play a key role in the post‐fire dynamics of many ground‐dwelling animals and hence different fire regimes are likely to influence animal dynamics through their effects on habitat structure. However, the role of predator–prey interactions, particularly with feral predators, is less clear and further study will require manipulative experiments of predators in conjunction with fire treatments to determine whether feral predator control should be integrated with fire management to improve outcomes for some native species.  相似文献

Tropospheric ozone can affect crop yield and has been reported to cause reductions in growth and biomass of forest tree species in laboratory and glasshouse studies. However, linkages between growth and ambient ozone concentrations in the field are not well established for forest trees. Ambient ozone concentrations have been shown to cause foliar injury on a number of tree species throughout much of the eastern USA. Symptom expression is influenced by endogenous and exogenous factors and, therefore, ozone-exposure/tree-response relationships have been difficult to confirm. Clearly defined, cause-effect relationships between visible injury and growth losses due to ozone have not been validated. Generalizations of sensitivity of forest trees to ozone are complicated by tree development stage, microclimate, leaf phenology, compensatory processes, within-species variation and other interacting stresses. In general, decreases in above-ground growth at ambient ozone levels in the eastern USA appear to be in the range of 0–10% per year. However, these conclusions are based on a small number of tree species, with the vast majority of studies involving individual tree seedlings in a non-competitive environment. Comparative studies of small and large trees indicate that seedlings are not suitable surrogates for predicting responses of mature trees to ozone. Process-level modelling is a promising methodology that has been recently utilized to assess ozone effects on a stand to regional scale, indicating that ozone is affecting forest growth in the eastern USA. The extent and magnitude of the response is variable and depends on many edaphic and climatic factors. It is imperative when conducting assessment exercises, however, that forest biologists constantly keep in mind the tremendous variability that exists within natural systems. Scaling of single site/physiological response phenomena from an individual tree to an ecosystem and/or region necessitates further research.  相似文献

1. Spatial patterns of freshwater fish species at regional and local scales were investigated to explore the possible role of interspecific interactions in influencing distribution and abundance within communities occupying coastal streams of North-Western France.
2. Nine sites from nine streams situated in the same biogeographical region were sampled annually over the 6-year period from 1990 to 1995.
3. Similar habitats (sites) with richer regional colonization pools exhibited proportionally richer local communities in terms of number of species, total density and total biomass of individuals. Furthermore, no negative relationships were found between density and biomass of each of the most common species and local species richness.
4. Results of dynamic regression models (applied to the above-mentioned species) suggest an absence of strong competition between all pairs of species.
5. The evidence on lack of density compensation for species-poor communities and absence of perceptible interspecific competition between species suggest that the communities studied are non-interactive.
6. Two main explanations can be advanced. First, the local abundance of species in the communities studied could be determined through differential responses to unpredictable environmental changes, rather than through biological interactions. Second, as a result of historical events, the communities studied are reduced in congeneric species which can limit, in turn, the influence of interspecific competition in structuring these communities.
7. These results underline the strong influence of regional processes in shaping local riverine fish communities and minimize the possible influence of species interactions in governing these communities.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Benthic particulate organic matter (POM) was collected from a shallow pool of a fourth order boreal stream and sorted into seven size fractions ranging from 63 to >4000μm. Each size fraction was analysed for fibre, total phosphorus, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen. Microbial activity was measured by oxygen consumption and characterized by assaying for eleven classes of exoenzymes including cellulase, phenol oxidase, peroxidase, phosphatase and sulphatase.
2. Indices of detritus quality such as C/N, C/P, percent lignin, and microbial respiration showed improvement with decreasing particle size. Three covarying exoenzyme groups were identified: a carbohydrase-phosphatase group that included eight enzymes, a phenol oxidase-peroxidase group, and sulphatase. The activity of the carbohydrase-phosphatase group, was significantly correlated with microbial respiration and the carbohydrate content of the POM. Phenol oxidase-peroxidase activity was correlated with lignin content for POM greater than 250 μm, but activity increased markedly in the two smallest size fractions even though the lignin content of the POM continued to decline, Sulphatase activity was inversely related to particle size over the entire range.
3. The changes in microbial activity with particle size were attributed to the increasing surface area to volume ratio of smaller particles and to an ecological succession in the microbial community.  相似文献
