The phenology of Fagus sylvatica was unaffected by exposure to an atmosphere of elevated CO2 (600 μL L-1) after two years of fumigation. Non-significant changes in nitrogen and phenolic content of the leaves decreased the nutritional status of beech for female larvae in elevated CO2 such that they responded by eating in a compensatory manner; males were unaffected. Rates of development, mortality and adult biomass of Rhynchaenus fagi were no different from those in ambient CO2 concentrations (355 μL L -1). It is possible that, with the changes in leaf chemistry affecting the females, fecundity will be altered, with important consequences for populations of beech weevil.  相似文献

Allometric and morphological characteristics of population samples of Tonicella marmorea from three sea lochs on the west coast of Scotland are described. The suitability of allometric relationships as taxonomic criteria are investigated by statistical comparisons of various regression constants, scatter diagrams and comparisons of curvature indices. Morphological characteristics such as ctenidia number and numbers of notches in the head and tail valves proved too variable to be regarded as diagnostic but they are useful taxonomic indicators. The need for all taxonomic characteristics to be derived from population samples is stressed and the use of valve and girdle sculpturing together with radula structure is emphasized.  相似文献

1. The "chloride space" in frog skin was determined and found to be 69.7 per cent by weight of wet skin. The chloride space occupies about 94 per cent of the total water space of skin. From this and other information, it appears that the "non-chloride space" measures only a part of the space occupied by the structural elements of skin. This space is referred to here as the intracellular compartment and the remainder as the extracellular compartment of frog skin. On this basis, potassium and sodium in skin are distributed as follows: total sodium, 60 to 75 µeq./gm. of wet skin; all sodium is probably extracellular; total potassium, 39 to 49 µeq./gm.; intracellular potassium, 37 to 47 µeq./gm. 2. Skins were immersed in solutions differing from each other in their sodium and potassium concentrations. Three levels of NaCl were studied: 48, 119, and 169 µeq./ml. For each of these solutions (referred to below as diluted, physiological, and concentrated saline), the potassium levels were varied from 0.1 to 20 µeq./ml. For skins in solutions low in potassium and high in sodium, it was found that an exchange of intracellular potassium against extracellular sodium occurs. The ratio for the number of potassium ions lost/number of sodium ions gained was 4:1,4:6, and 4:8 for skin in K+-free diluted, physiological, and concentrated saline, respectively. 3. Uptake of NaCl by the epithelium of frog skin is dependent on the potassium concentration of the environment. For skins in physiological saline, net uptake of NaCl was optimal (0.90 µeq. x cm.–2 x hr.–1) at 1 to 5 µeq. K+/ml. For skins in diluted and concentrated saline optimal NaCl uptake was seen at potassium concentrations of approximately 5 and 10 µeq. K+/ml., respectively. Net uptake of NaCl by the skin is also discussed, with relation to the potassium balance of skin. 4. Skin potentials decreased with increasing extracellular potassium concentration when diluted saline solutions were used. The opposite of this was found for skins in concentrated saline. For skins in physiological saline, skin potentials rose sharply from rather low values, when placed in solutions very low in potassium, to relatively high values, when immersed in solutions containing 1 to 5 µeq. K+/ml. Further increase in potassium concentration of the bath led to slight reductions in skin potentials. The highest potentials observed were of the order of 40 mv. In all cases studied, the inside was positive with relation to the outside. 5. It can be shown that values for intracellular potassium concentration as a function of extracellular potassium concentration satisfy, at a first but good approximation, Freundlich's isotherm. A modification of Freundlich's isotherm, recently introduced by Sips, may also be used to correlate the experimental data quantitatively. Since the latter isotherm has a rational interpretation, it is suggested that this be used, rather than Freundlich's isotherm, to express quantitatively the dependence of intracellular on extracellular potassium in frog skin.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Ignoring wasted material at the surface and sides, the variation in pH in six months old pit silage was smaller from side to side than from top to bottom. At the 2-foot level, where the best quality silage was found, variation was very slight. A correlation was found between pH and the logarithm of the microscopical count of bacteria, the total number of bacteria falling with decreasing pH.  相似文献

This study examines the importance of avian incubation costs as determinants of clutch-size variation by performing clutch-size and brood-size manipulations in the same population of Collared Flycatchers Ficedula albicollis during the same breeding season. In 2 5 cases when three or more clutches of the same size were completed on the same day, we moved two eggs on the day after the last egg had been laid from one randomly selected clutch (C) to another (C) and moved two other eggs from this to a third clutch (C+). In 20 other cases of simultaneously completed clutches of the same size, we moved two randomly selected young from one brood to a second and from that moved two other young to a third (B, B and B+groups). Most females were weighed the day after completion of the clutch and 1–4 days before hatching of the young, and some of them also 10–14 days after hatching of the young. We measured the daily energy expenditure of females incubating manipulated clutches of 4, 6 and 8 eggs by means of the doubly-labelled water (D218O) technique and also recorded their nest attendance. Hatching success of fertilized eggs was reduced in the enlarged clutches compared with control and reduced clutches. Females expired on average 3142.6 ml CO2 and expended 78.6 kJ per day while incubating, which corresponds to a metabolic intensity of 3.3 times BMR. Daily energy expenditure increased with clutch-size due to higher costs while incubating, and not because of changed activity patterns. There were no significant differences in length of incubation, female mass or mass changes between phases for the C, C and C+groups. In both the C and B groups, enlarged broods produced significantly more fledged young than control broods, and those significantly more than reduced broods. Fledgling tarsus-length and mass did not differ significantly between treatments in either the C or B groups. There was no significant difference in breeding success between clutch and brood manipulations. In this season, incubation costs did not entail significant fitness losses, expressed either as fledgling production or female condition. Also, control females could have raised more young to fledging age than they did with no apparent costs.  相似文献

The lightly compressed achenes of Centaurea eriophora L. beara pappus composed of stiff bristles at their apex and have anelaiosome appendage at their base. The pappus is ineffectivein keeping the achene wind-borne but does serve to regulatethe movement of the achene on the ground in response to wind.In wind the achene swivels like a weather vane with the baseof the achene pointing into the wind. In weak wind the pappusbristles prevent the achene from blowing away. Individual‐based, spatially explicit models provide a mechanism to understand distributions of individuals on the landscape; however, few models have been coupled with population genetics. The primary benefits of such a combination is to assess performance of population‐genetic estimators in realistic situations. kernelpop represents a flexible framework to implement almost any arbitrary population‐genetic and demographic model in a spatially explicit context using a variety of dispersal kernels. Estimates of type I error associated with genome scans in metapopulations are provided as an illustration of this software's utility.  相似文献
