Animal social signals are important for population recognition, communication, and mate choice. Although natural selection often favours cryptic coloration, sexual selection can underlie patterns of coloration that function in inter- or intrasexual communication. We compared social signal coloration of three lizard species across a substrate colour ecotone in New Mexico. These species exhibit cryptic blanched dorsal coloration on the gypsum dunes of White Sands and dark coloration on the surrounding desert soils. We detected corresponding population divergence in colour used for intra- ( Aspidoscelis inornata , Sceloporus undulatus ) or inter- ( Holbrookia maculata ) sexual signalling. Although the magnitude and direction of change in coloration varied among taxa, differences in hue and chroma accounted for more variation in social coloration than for dorsal coloration. The relative conspicuousness of social signals also varied across the ecotone. We discuss the possibilities that divergent signalling colours in this system are the result of: (1) stochastic processes, (2) direct selection, and/or (3) a correlated response to natural selection on dorsal coloration.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 243–255.  相似文献

Temporal and climate‐related changes in avian phenology were assessed for seven species of south‐eastern Australia using data obtained from members of the public, naturalist groups and other organizations. Despite significantly warmer temperatures (~0.02–0.03°C per year) and reduced rainfall (~1.6–8.0 mm per year) over much of south‐eastern Australia in recent decades, most species showed no corresponding trends in their timing of migration or breeding, the notable exceptions being the grey fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa) and the flame robin (Petroica phoenicea), which migrate through Melbourne, Victoria, during autumn and spring. In many species, however, migration or breeding timing appeared to be influenced to some extent by local, rather than regional, climate conditions, particularly local daily maximum and minimum temperatures. Whether these species will noticeably change their phenology to match projected changes in climate, perhaps when a currently unknown climate threshold is crossed, or whether these species are sufficiently flexible in their foraging strategies or food sources to be able to maintain their current timing, remains to be seen.  相似文献

Sphaeropsis shoot blight, caused by Diplodia pinea and Diplodia scrobiculata, damage conifers throughout the world. In France, the first disease outbreaks were reported during the 1990s. The factors associated with the pathogen presence in stands and the relationship between pathogen and disease distributions were analysed in order to understand the Sphaeropsis emergence. Eighty‐two stands of Pinus nigra, Pinus sylvestris, Pinus pinaster and Pinus radiata were visited. Cones were collected on the ground to assess the pathogen frequency. Diplodia spp were isolated and determined by a species‐specific PCR test. The role of potential explaining factors of D. pinea prevalence on cones was analysed by logistic regression. D. pinea was the dominant species in visited stands. The main factors influencing the pathogen presence selected in the models were host species (the pathogen being less frequent on P. pinaster than on P. nigra and P. sylvestris cones), winter temperature and summer rain, which were both positively correlated with cone colonization. The climate became more favourable to D. pinea presence within the last 15 years compared with the previous 30‐year period. By contrast, future climatic changes over the next 40 years should have far less impact on the pathogen presence.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Lactoferrin and its derived N-terminal peptide may be important host defenses against Giardia lamblia . We showed earlier that lactoferrin and the derived peptides have potent giardicidal activity in vitro. Using indirect immunofluorescence, we now demonstrate binding of lactoferrin and the peptides to the live trophozoite surface. Iron strongly inhibited binding of lactoferrin, and decreased binding of the peptides, while certain divalent metal ions decreased binding of all forms by about half. Lactoferrin and the peptedes caused striking and complex morphologic changes in the trophozoite plasmalemma, endomembranes and cytoskeleton, and increases the electron density of the lysosome-like peripheral vacuoles.  相似文献

The allozyme survey was extended to 7 strains of Naegleria gruberi and N. jadini in order to further characterize the genetic structure of these free-living amoebas. As formerly known for several characters the electrophoretic evidence reveals considerable heterogeneity at the genetic level among N. gruberi strains. Moreover, 2 distinct gene pools, that might likely represent natural taxa, are clearly identified. The single strain of N. jadini appears evolutionarily related to 1 group of N. gruberi which is also related to N. a. australiensis.  相似文献

Perceived intensity of bitterness of caffeine (0.5 - 1.6 g/100 mL) and of quinine HCI (0.5 - 1.6 g/L) added to hot cocoa gave similar response distributions with concentration by category scales (CS) and magnitude estimation (ME). Using caffeine additives, CS and graphic analogue scales (GS) gave similar bitterness response functions. Parabolic functions provided the best fit between concentration and ratings for CS, GS and ME. The data demonstrated no difference for ME of bitterness intensity between free or fixed moduli. Hedonic responses also were not modified by whether the modulus was free or fixed, however, greater ME values were ascribed to lower concentrations in the series when the reference was 4 g/L than when it was 2 g/L caffeine. CS intensity response distributions were similar between a series with a larger number of low levels versus a series with a larger number of high levels across the same concentration range. The results indicate that ME may be inappropriate for scaling of degree of liking, independent of type of modulus.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The life cycles of 2 strains of Allogromia laticollaris (CSH and TPA) raised on experimentally restricted diets have been studied. Cloned cultures of the strains differed in nutritional requirements for continuous reproduction. The TPA strain was more fecund. Both strains have a basically apogamic (asexual) life cycle; only occasionally were gamonts (sexually reproducing individuals) produced. They were autogamous (self-fertilizing) and fusion of the gametes took place within the parental test.
We found in CSH clones a regular alternation of vesicularly nucleated and compactly multinucleated diploid generations. The details of the life cycle of either strain are not known well enough to be able to construct life cycle diagrams more meaningful than that of Arnold. The 2 strains studied differ in cytologic and nuclear detail from each other and from the strain studied by Arnold.  相似文献

Upwind orientation flights of codling moth males Cydia pomonella L. to a single source of sex pheromone (E,E)‐8,10‐dodecadienol (codlemone) are significantly reduced when blending it with pheromone antagonists, either with codlemone acetate, (E,E)‐8,10‐dodecadienyl acetate, or with the codlemone isomer (E,Z)‐8,10‐dodecadienol. However, once activated by a pheromone stimulus, males no longer distinguish between a pheromone source and these antagonistic blend sources. This shows that the pheromone stimulus required for the initiation of an upwind flight response differs from the stimulus for maintaining upwind flight and landing at the source. In contrast to pheromone antagonists, males discriminate between pheromone alone and a blend source of pheromone and the plant volatile pear ester, ethyl (2E,4Z)‐2,4‐decadienoate. This indicates a difference in the detection and neural integration of pheromone and plant volatile stimuli.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Phenological shift in oviposition in seed predators may be a key factor for adaptive radiation if temporal differences lead to less intense competition. 2. This hypothesis was tested at two sites in the French Alps in three sympatric species of larch cone flies grouped into two phenological groups (early and late) differing in adult emergence and oviposition timing by approximately 2 weeks. The present study assessed the intensity of competition within and between groups by measuring four larval traits. Cone traits were measured, and the impact of early species parasitism on cone development was assessed. 3. The occupation of the central axis of a developing cone by one early larva has a strong detrimental effect on cone growth and seed production. However, there was almost no correlation between the variables measured on the cones and on the larvae, suggesting that the resources available were not limiting. 4. Inter‐group competition had no significant effect on early larvae. In contrast, both inter‐ and intra‐group competition had a significant negative effect on late larvae length (–11% and –16% respectively), dry mass (–8% and –23%), and lipid mass (–15% and –26%). The intensity of competition was stronger among larvae in the same phenological group, which is consistent with the hypothesis that shifts in oviposition promote adaptive radiation in larch cone flies by reducing competition among larvae.  相似文献
