The ground parrot (Pezoporus wallicus) has a coastal distribution in Victoria and has declined in range since European colonization. Its habitat consists of two major vegetation communities: coastal heathland and sedgeland. These are further divided into various sub-communities. These habitats contained high densities of cyperaceous and restionaceous plants, the seeds of which form the bulk of the bird's diet. Seeds and small fruits of some dicotyledonous plants and grasses are also eaten. Seed production by sedges remains fairly constant over time in sedgelands but varies in heathland, depending on time since burning. This variation is reflected by parallel changes in ground parrot population density. Both long unburnt and very frequently burnt heathlands are unsuitable for ground parrots. The birds also require dense vegetation cover. Ground parrots appear to live in territorial breeding pairs with enforced natal dispersal. Thirty-six hour diurnal studies of Ng-fixation by Nostoc in a rocky-bedded stream were carried out during the peak of the seasonal cycle of growth on clear and cloudy days in 1971 and 1972. On both occasions an unexpected pattern of N2-fixation occurred with maximum fixation rates in the light but also in the dark portion of the day, with lowest fixation periods in the early evening. I postulate that competition for reductant between nitrogenase and other processes, especially photorespiration, controls this unusual diel cycle rather than variations in the intracellular N-pool. N2-fixation rates on a cloudless May day in 1971 ranged from 0.2 to 4.8 nmoles C2H4 cm−2 h−1 and from 0.3 to 3.3 nmoles C2H4 mg−1 h−1 dry weight of Nostoc, depending on time of day and favourableness of site. On the same site on a cloudy, rainy May day in 1972 fixation ranged from 0.5 to 3.1 nmoles C2H4 mg−1 h−1 dry weight, and from 1 to 4.5 nmoles C2H4 mg−1 h−1 ash-free dry weight of Nostoc. Unstimulated mouse peritoneal exudate cells were cultured on coverslips in Medium 199 containing 10% (v/v) calf serum. Cytochalasin B dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and diluted in Medium 199 was added to cultures to give final concentrations of 1, 5 and 10 μg/ml. Equal numbers of Leishmania mexicana promastigotes, Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes and sheep red cells were added to 24 hr cultures incubated at 37 C. The macrophage monolayers were fixed and stained at various time intervals. L. mexicana promastigotes and sheep red blood cells were found to attach to macrophages in the presence of the drug but did not enter the cells. When the medium containing the Cytochalasin was replaced with normal medium phagocytosis of the adherent parasites and red cells followed rapidly. T. cruzi epimastigotes were found inside macrophages in both drug-treated and drug-free cultures although the number found to be intracellular in the latter was significantly greater. This study suggests that L. mexicana promastigotes enter macrophages by being phagocytosed, whereas T. cruzi epimastigotes can actively penetrate these cells. 相似文献
