The larvae of Alsophila pometaria (Harr.), feeding on the young foliage of oak, has a higher relative growth rate (RGR) and relative nitrogen accumulation rate (RNAR) than the larvae of Anisota senatoria (J. E. Smith), feeding on the mature foliage of oak. Although the young oak foliage is more efficiently digested by A. pometaria (higher AD's), it is not more efficiently assimilated and used for growth (no difference in ECI's). Thus, the higher growth rate of A. pometaria is due entirely to a higher consumption rate (RCR and RNCR). Young foliage is significantly higher in nitrogen and water than mature foliage, but phenol and tannin levels are comparable in young and old foliage. A. pometaria consumes the foliage of different oak species at the same rate, independent of nitrogen content, while A. senatoria increases its consumption rate in response to decreased nitrogen levels. As a result, the growth rate of A. pometaria is directly related to leaf nitrogen content, while the growth rate of A. senatoria is independent of leaf nitrogen. The two species of insects have digestive systems that are very similar biochemically, and that are well-designed for effective protein digestion. Tannins and phenols do not influence the nutrional indices of either species. We suggest that the major benefit of spring feeding is the availability of succulent, high-nitrogen foliage, and not the avoidance of high-tannin foliage. The spring feeder appears to have a feeding strategy that favors rapid growth at the expense of efficiency, while the late summer feeder has a strategy that favors efficiency over rate.
Résumé Alimentées sur feuillage jeune de chêne, les chenilles d'Alsophila pometaria avaient un taux relatif de croissance (RGR) et un taux relatif d'accumulation d'azote (RNAR) plus élevés que les chenilles d'Anisota senatoria alimentées sur feuillage mûr de chêne. Bien que le jeune feuillage soit plus efficacement digéré par A. pometaria (AD plus élevé), il n'est pas assimilé et utilisé pour la croissance avec de meilleurs rendements (les ECI ne sont pas différents). Ainsi le taux de croissance plus élevé d'A. pometaria est dû entièrement à un taux de consommation plus important (RCR et RNCR). Le feuillage jeune est significativement plus riche en azote et en eau que le feuillage mûr, mais les niveaux de phénol et de tanins sont les mêmes. A pometaria consomme les feuilles de différentes espèces de chênes au même taux, indépendamment de la teneur en azote, tandis que A. senatoria accroît sa consommation en réponse à une diminution de la teneur en azote. Il en résulte que le taux de croissance d'A. pometaria dépend directement de la teneur en azote des feuilles, tandis que celui d'A. senatoria en est indépendant. Les systèmes digestifs des deux insectes sont biochimiquement semblables et sont efficaces pour la digestion des protéines. Les tanins et les phénols n'influent pas sur les indices nutritionnels de ces deux espèces. Nous estimons que le principal intérêt de l'alimentation printanière est la disponibilité en feuillage succulent, riche en azote, et non l'absence de feuilles à haute teneur en tanin. L'alimentation printanière semble correspondre à une strategie alimentaire qui favorise la croissance aux dépens de l'efficacité tandis que l'alimentation en fin d'été est une stratégie qui favorise l'efficacité sur la rapidité.

Aims: To identify, using phenotypic and genotypic methods, the dominant lactic acid bacteria (LAB) present in São Jorge cheese – one of the 11 Portuguese cheeses currently bearing an Appéllation d’Origine Protegée status. Methods and Results: A total of 225 isolates from milk, curd and cheeses throughout ripening were identified to the genus level, 108 to the species level and ten to the strain level. Phenotypic methods indicated that lactobacilli, followed by enterococci, were the dominant bacteria. The most frequently isolated species were Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. Ribotyping differentiated three L. paracasei, two E. faecalis and one Lactobacillus plantarum types. Enterococcus spp. exhibited the highest esterase and β-galactosidase activities among all isolates. Conclusions: The dominant LAB in São Jorge cheese are L. paracasei, L. rhamnosus, E. faecalis and E. faecium. Enterococcus likely plays a leading role upon acidification and aroma development in said cheese. Significance and Impact of the Study:  Our results support that a combination of conventional biochemical methods with genotypic methods allows for a thorough characterization and identification of isolates. Despite the limited number of isolates subject to molecular subtyping, a few specific Enterococcus and Lactobacillus strains were found that are promising ones for development of a starter culture. Hence, L. paracasei and E. faecalis are good candidates for a tentative starter culture, designed for manufacturing of São Jorge cheese at large – which takes advantage of actual isolates, in attempts to eventually standardize the quality of said cheese variety.  相似文献

Role of lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase) in water stress-promoted senescence of detached rice leaves was investigated. The senescence was followed by measuring the decrease in protein content. Increased lipid peroxidation was closely correlated with senescence in water stressed leaves. Decrease in superoxide dismutase activity was evident 8 h after beginning of water stress. However, decreased catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase activity was observed only when senescence was observed. Glutathione reductase was not affected by water stress. Free radical scavengers retarded water stress-enhanced senescence.  相似文献

Changes in fatty acid patterns, digestive and metabolic enzyme activities and egg production rates (EPR) were studied in the small calanoid copepod Temora longicornis. Female copepods were collected in spring 2005 off Helgoland (North Sea). In the laboratory one group of copepods was fed with the cryptophycean Rhodomonas baltica for a period of 3 days. Another group of copepods was maintained without food. According to the fatty acid patterns, animals from the field were feeding on a more detrital, animal-based and to a minor extent to a diatom-based diet. Under laboratory conditions, females rapidly accumulated fatty acids such as 18:4 (n-3), 18:3 (n-3) and 18:2 (n-6) which are specific of R. baltica. Diatom-specific fatty acids such as 16:1 (n-7) were strongly reduced. In fed animals the activities of digestive and metabolic enzymes remained constant and egg production rates were highest on day 2. Starving animals, in contrast, showed significantly reduced faecal pellet production and EPR. Proteolytic enzyme activity decreased rapidly within 24 h and remained at a low level until the end of the experiment. Citrate synthase decreased continuously as well. T. longicornis rapidly reacts to dietary changes and food depletion. It has limited energy stores and, thus, strongly depends on continuous food supply.  相似文献

Nearest neighbor analysis of immunocytolocalization experiments indicates that the enzymes glyceraldehyde-3-P dehydrogenase, triose-P isomerase and aldolase are located close to one another in the pea leaf chloroplast stroma, and that aldolase is located close to sedoheptulose bisphosphatase. Direct transfer of the triose phosphates between glyceraldehyde-3-P dehydrogenase and triose-P isomerase, and from glyceraldehyde-3-P dehydrogenase and triose-P isomerase to aldolase, is then a possibility, as is direct transfer of sedoheptulose bisphosphate from aldolase to sedoheptulose bisphosphatase. Spatial organization of these enzymes may be important for efficient CO2 fixation in photosynthetic organisms. In contrast, there is no indication that fructose bisphosphatase is co-localized with aldolase, and direct transfer of fructose bisphosphate from aldolase to fructose bisphosphatase seems unlikely.  相似文献

Group B streptococci (GBS) are the leading cause of neonatal meningitis and sepsis worldwide. Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) is the current prevention strategy given to pregnant women with confirmed vaginal GBS colonization. Due to antibiotic resistance identified in GBS, we previously developed another strategy using a bacteriophage lytic enzyme, PlyGBS, to reduce vaginal GBS colonization. In this study, various DNA mutagenesis methods were explored to produce PlyGBS mutants with increased lytic activity against GBS. Several hyperactive mutants were identified that contain only the endopeptidase domain found in the N-terminal region of PlyGBS and represent only about one-third of the wild-type PlyGBS in length. Significantly, these mutants not only have 18–28-fold increases in specific activities compared to PlyGBS, but they also have a similar activity spectrum against several streptococcal species. One of the hyperactive mutants, PlyGBS90-1, reduced the GBS colonization from >5 logs of growth per mouse to <50 colony-forming units (cfu) 4 h post treatment (∼4-log reduction) using a single dose in a mouse vaginal model. A reduction in GBS colonization before delivery should significantly reduce neonatal GBS infection providing a safe alternative to IAP.  相似文献

Abstract The respiratory activity of cysts of Azotobacter vinelandii has been compared with that of vegetative cells. Whole cysts had a much reduced respiratory activity which was less sensitive to KCN. Substrate oxidation rates by membrane preparations from cysts were reduced approximately 10-fold and sensitivity to KCN was decreased by a similar factor. Difference spectra of cyst membranes revealed changes in cytochrome content. Cytochrome oxidase d was apparently absent, cytochrome a 1 levels were approximately halved whilst those of cytochrome oxidase o were almost doubled. Cytochromes of the b and c -type were present in similar amounts to those in vegetative cells.  相似文献

Leuconostoc mesenteroides produces glucosyltransferases (GTFs) and fructosyltransferases (FTFs) which are inducible enzymes which respectively synthesize dextrans and levans from sucrose. Except for a few mutant strains which produce high activities in glucose medium, L. mesenteroides is thought not to produce GTFs and FTFs unless sucrose is present. We show here that cultures of eight strains produced low, but detectable GTF activity when glucose, maltose or melibiose replaced sucrose as the growth substrate. Four strains also produced FTFs of approximately 130 kDa in medium with or without sucrose. The GTFs and FTFs produced on sugars other than sucrose could be detected as bands on SDS gels even when not detected by other methods. Except for strain B-523, the number, sizes and relative intensities of the bands were independent of the sugar used for growing the cultures. Alternansucrase from strains B-1355 and B-1501 in glucose or maltose medium was almost entirely associated with the cell fraction, ruling out binding to glucans as the cause of the association.
