The mothMimorista pulchellalis was monitored over 2 years after liberation in a jointed cactus (Opuntia aurantiaca) infestation in South Africa. Moth and cactus densities were estimated using a system of randomly-assigned quadrats and the
impact of the moth on the cactus population quantified. Moths appeared adapted to survive on the etiolated form of jointed
cactus plants, killing approximately 1% of the increment in small plants annually. Large plants were also attacked but damage
was negligible. The moths occurred in low numbers throughout the study period and generally went through 3 generations in
a year.

Les densités de pyrale et de cactus ont été estimées en utilisant un système de quadrats distribués au hasard et l'impact de la pyrale sur la population de cactus a été quantifiée. Les pyrales semblaient adaptées à survivre sur la forme étiolée des plants de cactus tuant approximativement 1% de l'accroissement annuel des petits plants. Les gros plants étaient aussi attaqués, mais les dégats étaient négligeables. Criteria for the evaluation of new drugs to treat obesity are important as guides for designing clinical trials to test these agents. These criteria must be developed in relation to the realities of obesity, which is a chronic disease associated with morbidity and mortality that is increased by visceral fat deposits. The observation that patients regain weight after stopping drug treatment for obesity argues for the proposition that drugs work only when taken and NOT that the drugs are ineffective. The analogy between the development of treatments for obesity to those for the treatment of hypertension is used to highlight potential areas for new developments. Several features of an ideal drug for the treatment of obesity are suggested. Criteria for evaluating new drugs include both primary and secondary endpoints. The primary endpoint for an anti-obesity drug should be weight loss, possibly by category of success. Losses of total body fat or visceral fat might be alternative primary endpoints. Secondary endpoints include reduction in risk factors for associated diseases and improvement in the quality of life. In trials where vigorous placebo designs including highly aggressive behavior modification or very-low-calorie diets were used, it may be difficult or impossible to detect a response to a drug. 相似文献

The gut microbiota plays an important yet incompletely understood role in the induction and propagation of ulcerative colitis (UC). Organism-level efforts to identify UC-associated microbes have revealed the importance of community structure, but less is known about the molecular effectors of disease. We performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing in parallel with label-free data-dependent LC-MS/MS proteomics to characterize the stool microbiomes of healthy (n = 8) and UC (n = 10) patients. Comparisons of taxonomic composition between techniques revealed major differences in community structure partially attributable to the additional detection of host, fungal, viral, and food peptides by metaproteomics. Differential expression analysis of metaproteomic data identified 176 significantly enriched protein groups between healthy and UC patients. Gene ontology analysis revealed several enriched functions with serine-type endopeptidase activity overrepresented in UC patients. Using a biotinylated fluorophosphonate probe and streptavidin-based enrichment, we show that serine endopeptidases are active in patient fecal samples and that additional putative serine hydrolases are detectable by this approach compared with unenriched profiling. Finally, as metaproteomic databases expand, they are expected to asymptotically approach completeness. Using ComPIL and de novo peptide sequencing, we estimate the size of the probable peptide space unidentified (“dark peptidome”) by our large database approach to establish a rough benchmark for database sufficiency. Despite high variability inherent in patient samples, our analysis yielded a catalog of differentially enriched proteins between healthy and UC fecal proteomes. 实验中对麻疹疫苗强化免疫前、后的现场进行了调查、评估并对麻疹监测系统和传染病报告系统的疫情资料进行了分析。结果表明,这次强化免疫接种儿童1100315人,报告接种率和调查接种率均>95%;接种后麻疹发病人数明显减少,发病率仅为0.66/10万,较强化免疫前发病率9.15/10万下降了82.51%,约有1/3不良反应者确诊为风疹;2006年7月—2007年6月麻疹监测系统数据显示,目前88%的麻疹病例发生在8月龄~14岁,约有32%病例为无免疫史或免疫史不详。高质量MV强化免疫能迅速降低麻疹发病,因此强化免疫接种人群的确定必须结合当地流行病学监测资料并尽可能在较大范围内开展,以形成有效的人群免疫屏障来阻断麻疹病毒的传播。保证>95%接种率是该次强化免疫活动的前提,同时须作好充分准备以应对可能发生预防接种时出现的不良反应。建议在提高常规免疫服务质量的情况下,每3~4年仍需开展后续强化免疫。 相似文献
