For the estimation of population mean in simple random sampling, an efficient regression-type estimator is proposed which is more efficient than the conventional regression estimator and hence than mean per unit estimator, ratio and product estimators and many other estimators proposed by various authors. Testing for an association between the leading vectors of multivariate trait (co)variation within populations (the ‘line of least resistance’) and among populations is an important tool for exploring variational bias in evolution. In a recent study of stickleback fish populations, a bootstrap‐based test was introduced that takes into account estimation error in both vectors and hence improves the previously available bootstrap method. Because this test was implemented incorrectly, however, I here describe the correct test protocol and provide a reanalysis of the original data set. The application of this new test protocol should improve future investigations of evolution along lines of least resistance and other vector comparisons.  相似文献

We consider estimation after a group sequential test. An estimator that is unbiased or has small bias may have substantial conditional bias (Troendle and Yu, 1999, Coburger and Wassmer, 2001). In this paper we derive the conditional maximum likelihood estimators of both the primary parameter and a secondary parameter, and investigate their properties within a conditional inference framework. Summary Based on a dose-survival curve, a radiation dose of 3.99 C/kg was used to induce antibiotic-resistant mutants inBacteroides fragilis. Escherichia coli B/r membrane fragments were employed as a reducing agent. Antibiotic-resistant mutants ofB. fragilis were utilized to study the mechanism by which these organisms become resistant to selected chemotherapeutic agents. Decreased accumulation of tetracycline by resistant mutants ofB. fragilis suggests that the resistance to this antibiotic is associated with the outer membrane permeability. There is a marked difference in the inhibitory action of rifampicin on RNA polymerase activity in rifampicin-sensitive and-resistant strains ofB. fragilis. This enzyme is, therefore, the likely target for inhibition of bacterial growth in this anaerobe by rifampicin.  相似文献

Summary Somatic embryogenesis from different genotypes of Asparagus officinalis L. could be obtained by in vitro culture of shoot apices. Apices were first cultured on an auxin-rich inducing medium and then transferred onto a hormone-free development medium. All genotypes tested in this way produced a few somatic embryos. In some experiments, during the development phase, a new kind of friable highly embryogenic tissue appeared in a random manner. These tissues could be continuously subcultured on a hormone-free medium and were named embryogenic lines. Five of these embryogenic lines regenerated plants from somatic embryos. These regenerated plants exhibited an increased embryogenic response compared to the parent plants; e.g. apex culture produced somatic embryos without any auxin treatments. Using a general form of the directional mutation theory, this paper analyzes the effect of mutations in mutator genes on the G + C content of DNA, the frequency of substitution mutations, and evolutionary changes (cumulative mutations) under various degrees of selective constraints. Directional mutation theory predicts that when the mutational bias between A/T and G/C nucleotide pairs is equilibrated with the base composition of a neutral set of DNA nucleotides, the mutation frequency per gene will be much lower than the frequency immediately after the mutator mutation takes place. This prediction explains the wide variation of the DNA G + C content among unicellular organisms and possibly also the wide intragenomic heterogeneity of third codon positions for the genes of multicellular eukaryotes. The present analyses lead to several predictions that are not consistent with a number of the frequently held assumptions in the field of molecular evolution, including belief in a constant rate of evolution, symmetric branching of phylogenetic trees, the generality of higher mutation frequency for neutral sets of nucleotides, the notion that mutator mutations are generally deleterious because of their high mutation rates, and teleological explanations of DNA base composition. Among the mutant lines of rice that have been selected for morphological characters, one line, NM67, was found to have a low content of glutelin and a higher content of prolamine in its seed protein than other Japanese cultivars. This mutant is a semi-dwarf and partially sterile line, and its leaves turn yellow before heading. Genetic analysis after backcross to the original cultivar, Nihonmasari, revealed the following: (1) the character of low glutelin content was always accompanied by the character of high prolamine content; (2) the low glutelin (and high prolamine) character seemed to be manifested by a single dominant gene; and (3) semi-dwarfness, low fertility and early yellowing leaf of the mutant, which might also be pleiotropy, were controlled by a single recessive gene independent of the gene for protein content. The protein character of NM67 was genetically separated from semi-dwarfness and low fertility, and a new line having low glutelin content and high prolamine content with normal morphological characters comparable to those of the original cultivar was obtained from the progenies of the cross. The possible use of this line as a low protein rice cultivar is discussed.  相似文献
