不同环境条件下的植物个体可以表现出形态特征的分异和物质分配的权衡与调整。采用大样本抽样调查与统计分析方法,比较研究扎龙湿地不同生境芦苇(Phragmites Australis)生殖株和营养株的形态特征以及生物量分配的异速关系。结果表明:在9月末,盐碱生境、旱生生境、湿生生境和水生生境芦苇分株的生长表现出较大的生态可塑性,株高和株重均以盐碱生境最小,水生生境最大,最大值与最小值的比值分别为1.3-3.3和1.8-5.1,分株生长在种群间的变异度高于种群内,与营养株相比,生殖株的变异度较低;分株的支持分配与生产分配的比值为1.8-4.2,生产分配以盐碱生境最高,以水生生境最低,而支持分配和生殖分配表现与生产分配相反的序位;生殖株的花序长和花序重与株高间呈直线函数形式增长,株高和株重低于种群平均值的20%和35%的分株不进行有性生殖;叶重、叶鞘和茎重以及分株重与株高间呈幂函数形式的异速生长关系。植物通过改变个体的形态特征以及调整构件间生物量分配适应不同环境,而受遗传因素控制的构件间生长关系却相对稳定。  相似文献

Clonal structure in clonal plants can affect sexual reproduction. Individual ramets can decrease reproduction if their neighbors are ramets of the same genet due to inbreeding depression or self-incompatibility. We assessed ramet reproductive success in the partial self-incompatible Ferocactus robustus (Cactaceae) as a function of floral display size in focal ramets and floral display size and clonal structure of their reproductive neighborhoods. Ramets were labeled, sized in number of stems, mapped and genetically identified through RAPD markers in one population. A pollen dispersal area of 15-m radius was established for each ramet to determine the clonal diversity in the neighborhoods. Flower production and fruit set were counted on a monthly basis during one reproductive season as a surrogate of ramet fitness. We expected a decrease in individual ramet reproductive success as a function of the number of reproductive ramets of the same genet in the neighborhood. A total of 272 sampled ramets revealed 116 multilocus genotypes, showing high clonal diversity in the population (G/N = 0.43, D = 0.98). Clonal diversity of neighborhoods ranged from 0.06 to 1 and fruit set varied from 0 to 76.9%. Individual ramet reproductive success was influenced by (1) mate availability, (2) floral display size of a genet within the reproductive neighborhood, and (3) the proportion of distinguishable genotypes. Floral display size of genets and ramets coupled with the genetic diversity within the reproductive neighborhood determines the low sexual reproduction in F. robustus.  相似文献

The rhizomatous perennial Pityopsis graminifolia was studied in a Florida sandhill community in an annually burned site, a periodically burned site, and a site that has been protected from fire since 1965. These different fire regimes significantly affected the demography and life histories of both plants and plant parts in this clonal species. Fires resulted in reductions in ramet biomass and height, and an increase in the (root + rhizome)/shoot biomass ratio. Burning also decreased the total number of flower heads and new rhizomes produced per ramet. However, the survivorship of initiated rhizomes was greater in burned sites and resulted in a larger number of established daughter ramets per clone. As a result, in burned sites there was a shift in clone structure toward larger numbers of smaller ramets, but there were no significant reductions in seed or rhizome production on a per genet basis. The results showed that the responses to fire in P. graminifolia are different when measured at the genet vs. ramet level and that the effects of fire on clones can be explained by demographic responses of plant parts. Population regeneration in the study sites was dependent on successful clonal ramet production because no seedling recruitment was observed. This suggests that disturbances other than fire are important for new genet recruitment in these clonal populations.  相似文献

Hedysarum laeve, a rhizomatous clonal semi-shrub, commonly dominates the inland dunes in semiarid areas of northern China. This species propagates vegetatively by extension of horizontal woody rhizomes resulting in programmed reiteration of apical and/or axillary meristems. In this study, the plants were experimentally manipulated by cutting rhizome connections and 14C-labelling techniques were employed to investigate the ecological significance of rhizome connections within the H. laeve clone. Severance of rhizome connections had a great effect on the performance of young ramets within a clone. Young ramets severed from their parent ramets experienced a significant reduction both in ramet growth and vegetative propagation, as compared with the intact young ramets. Within clonal fragments, consisting of three interconnected ramets including a mother ramet, a daughter ramet and a granddaughter ramet, 14C-photosynthates from the fed leaves of mother ramets were acropetally transported to all clonal component parts. The 14C-photosynthate translocation within the clonal fragment provides evidence that the young ramets were supported by their parent ramets. Our results suggest that the woody rhizome connections among the interconnected ramets are ecologically and strategically important for the species to grow in the sand dune habitat.  相似文献

Hottonia palustris L. (Primulaceae) is characterized by a heteromorphic incompatibility system. The strategy of distylic ramets is believed to promote outcrossing, to maintain overall genetic diversity and to prevent inbreeding depression. In spite of this distyly, an extremely low amount of allozymic diversity was observed in 545 individual ramets from 14 populations in Flanders (Belgium). A possible explanation for such low genetic variation is discussed in relation to the vegetative propagating abilities and the ecological niche width of the species. In contrast to the uniformity in allozymes as well as to the feature of single morph populations, there was a high variability in reproductive success between populations such as the number of seeds per ramet (425–2633), the number of flowers per ramet (9–36) and the mean weight of seeds (0.03–0.17 mg). Small populations and even those consisting of only one style morph may show a high reproductive success. As a whole, H. palustris showed a negative relationship of reproductive success with the surface area of its populations.  相似文献

对乡土植物生长繁殖特征的认识是制定合理的植被恢复及管理措施的基础和依据.通过大面积的野外踏查和样方调查,分析了岷江干旱河谷乡土灌木-黄蔷薇(Rosa hugonis)的分布、生长繁殖特征及空间差异.发现:(1)黄蔷薇主要分布于岷江干旱河谷的茂县段,其植株株高、基径、年龄、丛冠幅、丛的萌生数、丛干重、丛生物量和密度等生长特征存在明显空间差异,除丛萌生数和密度之外海拔对其他各参数都有较大的影响,这些参数的值在高海拔地段大于低海拔地段;(2)黄蔷薇在干旱河谷丛平均萌生数为6.48±0.97株/丛,丛的萌生能力较强,且其受砍伐后具有很强的再生能力;萌生株年龄结构大致为金字塔型,最大植株年龄为25a;(3)干旱河谷黄蔷薇的结实量较大,平均值为(404.96±106.91)果/丛,结实特征表现出明显的空间差异性;(4)各生长与结实参数关系密切,影响结实量的最主要的生长因素是冠幅和丛干重.研究结果表明:黄蔷薇适应干旱河谷的环境条件,具有较广泛的分布,生长和和繁殖状况良好,是可供选择的干旱河谷恢复物种.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Mechanical stimulation (MS) often induces plants to undergo thigmomorphogenesis and to synthesize an array of signalling substances. In clonal plants, connected ramets often share resources and hormones. However, little is known about whether and how clonal integration influences the ability of clonal plants to withstand MS. We hypothesized that the effects of MS may be modulated by clonal integration.

Methods

We conducted an experiment in which ramet pairs of Leymus secalinus were subjected to three treatments: (1) connected ramet pairs under a homogeneous condition [i.e. the proximal (relatively old) and distal (relatively young) ramets were not mechanically stressed]; (2) connected ramet pairs under a heterogeneous condition (i.e. the proximal ramet was mechanically stressed but the distal ramet was not); and (3) disconnected ramet pairs under the same condition as in treatment 2. At the end of the experiment, we harvested all plants and determined their biomass and allocation.

Key Results

Clonal integration had no significant influence on measured traits of distal L. secalinus ramets without MS. However, under MS, plants with distal ramets that were connected to a mother ramet produced more total plant biomass, below-ground biomass, ramets and total rhizome length than those that were not connected. Partial MS exerted local effects on stimulated ramets and remote effects on connected unstimulated ramets. Partial MS increased total biomass, root/shoot ratio, number of ramets and total rhizome length of stimulated proximal ramets, and increased total biomass, root weight ratio, number of ramets and total rhizome length of connected unstimulated ramets due to clonal integration.

Conclusions

These findings suggest that thigmomorphogenesis may protect plants from the stresses caused by high winds or trampling and that thigmomorphogenesis can be strongly modulated by the degree of clonal integration.  相似文献

1 Phenology and reproduction were studied in three populations of the cleistogamous herb Oxalis acetosella during three growing seasons, in order to see how the balance between chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL) reproduction varies with temporal and spatial environmental variation and with plant size. The numbers of CH and CL flower buds, flowers, immature capsules and mature capsules were counted per ramet, ramet sizes were estimated, and mature capsules were collected for seed counts.
2 Both CH and CL flower numbers were positively correlated with ramet size expressed as leaf number, but the correlation was much stronger in the CL phase. CL flower production also varied significantly between years and sites. Thus, CL production in O. acetosella was not independent of resources and climatic variation.
3 When the effects of year and site were taken into account, the probability of an individual flower developing into a mature fruit was not higher in the CL phase than in the CH phase.
4 CL production was affected by fertilization success in the CH phase. Ramets with one or more CH flowers left unfertilized generally produced more CL buds than ramets with all their CH flowers fertilized. The former group also tended to have more seeds per CL capsule.
5 Since reproductive success in the two phases varies in different temporal and spatial patterns, cleistogamy in O. acetosella is considered to be a bet‐hedging strategy optimizing reproductive output in fluctuating environments.
6 The findings of this study are in conflict with the general view on cleistogamy as a fail‐safe mechanism for back‐up seed production, unaffected by variations in resource supply and environmental conditions.  相似文献

Abstract It has been proposed that relative allocation to female function increases with plant size in animal‐pollinated species. Previous investigations in several monoecious Sagittaria species seem to run contrary to the prediction of size‐dependent sex allocation (SDS), throwing doubt on the generalization of SDS. Plant size, phenotypic gender, and flower production were measured in experimental populations of an aquatic, insect‐pollinated herb Sagittaria trifolia (Alismataceae) under highly different densities. The comparison of ramets produced clonally can reduce confounding effects from genetic and environmental factors. In the high‐density population, 48% of ramets were male without female flowers, but in the low‐density population all ramets were monoecious. We observed allometric growth in reproductive allocation with ramet size, as evident in biomass of reproductive structures and number of flowers. However, within both populations female and male flower production were isometric with ramet size, in contrast to an allometric growth in femaleness as predicted by SDS. Phenotypic gender was not related to ramet size in either population. The results indicated that large plants may increase both female and male function even in animal‐pollinated plants, pointing towards further studies to test the hypothesis of size‐dependent sex allocation using different allocation currencies.  相似文献

Cnidium dubium is a highly endangered, perennial river corridor plant in Central Europe. Here we summarise a 4-year field study of its ramet demography, growing in two different flood meadows in the Lower Havel River Valley in northeastern Germany, emphasising the influence of site-specific abiotic factors, mowing and the summer flood of 2002.We recorded 1658 ramets at densities between 2 and 180 ramets m−2, which varied over area and time, indicating a high small-scale turnover of this species within grasslands. The half-life of the different ramet cohorts was estimated to range from 0.1 to 1.3 years, but single ramets of more than 4 years old were also found. Ramets are monocarpic: they propagate only once in their life. The highest probability of a vegetative ramet becoming a flowering stalk was 11.6%. Ramet density, cumulative number of newly produced ramets per year, leaf length, leaf age, reproductive growth and recovery from the summer flood of 2002 varied, depending on site. C. dubium had a higher performance at sites in intermediate zones of the overall flooding gradient compared with higher zones. Flooding stress is the controlling factor for the lower limit of its performance, while there was no evidence for an upper limit controlled by summer drought. Mowing slightly increased the cumulative number of leaves per ramet, but it decreased the size of new leaves and also the summer above-ground biomass per ramet. As a consequence, the most marked effect was that fewer ramets entered the generative life stage, but the plants were able to keep their overall reproductive performance on a level independent of mowing. Knowledge of basic growth patterns of C. dubium in natural populations could help to explain the species rareness, and may also suggest appropriate strategies to manage its survival.  相似文献

Vegetative reproduction is a very common alternative by which plants can contribute to the next generations. There are many considerations predicting which mode of reproduction, vegetative or sexual, should be favored and numerous experimental studies to verify them. However, the results are inconsistent especially when the effect of plant density is considered. I apply here a dynamic optimization model to predict the rate of vegetative and sexual reproduction in plants as a response to changes in the local plant density. The population is assumed to occupy a heterogeneous environment consisting of patches in which growth and reproduction of plants are possible and unfavorable space between them. As the environment is globally stable, the seeds, which can disperse without restriction, exhibit a constant recruitment rate. The ramets are assumed to settle only within the patch of the mother plant. The rate of ramet production effects local density, which in turn determines ramet recruitment. The optimal strategy maximizes the expected lifetime genetic contribution, realized via both vegetative and sexual reproduction. The solutions obtained under these assumptions are dualistic. The model predicts that different approaches applied in studying the effect of ramet density should give opposite outcomes. When the comparison is between patches in natural populations, a positive relationship between relative ramet allocation and density is expected. When the density is experimentally manipulated or its effect is analyzed across different successional stages, a negative relationship should be found. The results seem to be confirmed by empirical studies.  相似文献

Results of field and glasshouse experiments on Solidago shortii, and our observations on this species over many years, were used to construct a conceptual model of the roles of succession, light, soil nutrients and disturbance on population vigor and maintenance of this federal-endangered species. As cover of woody vegetation increased at a population site between 1986 and 1992, number of flowering ramets of S. shortii significantly decreased but number of vegetative ramets remained nearly constant. Adult plants transplanted into a redcedar thicket and those shaded in a glasshouse produced many fewer flowering ramets and capitula per flowering ramet and less biomass and had higher mortality than those in the open. Seedlings/juveniles shaded in a glasshouse had significantly less dry biomass; lower RGR, NAR, leaf area and root/shoot ratio and higher LAR, SLA and LWR than nonshaded ones. In a field site and glasshouse, fertilized plants (NPK) consistently had more flowering ramets and capitula per flowering ramet than nonfertilized ones. Hierarchy of dry weight of plants grown in a glasshouse in soils derived from five types of bedrock was phosphatic limestone > calcareous shale > sandstone > black shale = dolomite. Flowering and biomass production in the field-fertilizer and soil-type experiments were associated closely with levels of P. Number of flowering ramets significantly increased in plants transferred from shaded to nonshaded glasshouse conditions, but no such increase occurred after opening the canopy above plants in a thicket. Both high light and high nutrient levels apparently are necessary to maintain high vigor of S. shortii. In areas subject to invasion by woody plants, periodic high intensity disturbance may be required to prevent population extirpation.  相似文献

In this study, the authors aimed to revise the ability of Solidago × niederederi, a hybrid between S. canadensis and S. virgaurea, to produce sexual ramets and seedlings as a part of its naturalization strategy. Based on a two-season garden cultivation experiment, we showed that the hybrid produces more generative ramets than vegetative ones and the number of generative ramets increases from one season to another with an increasing number of stem buds located on the caudices. We also revealed a spontaneous seedling recruitment by the hybrid during cultivation in the garden. Based on the seed germination test under laboratory conditions, we evidenced that the hybrid can reach a higher final germination percentage than S. canadensis but a lower one than S. virgaurea. Based on field studies conducted in 35 populations in Poland, the hybrid formed the largest populations in tree plantations and on abandoned fields, reaching 16.5 and 15.7 ramet clusters on average, respectively. The most abundant populations were found on abandoned fields; however, the mean number of ramets per cluster did not differ remarkably among habitats (H = 6.5, p = 0.163). In all populations, the mean number of vegetative ramets per cluster reached 0.85, while the generative ones achieved 6.43 on average. The statistical analysis proved that the aforementioned differences are significant (t = ?12.6, p = 0.0002). Our results suggest that S. × niederederi is able to generate its own offspring by sexual reproduction and that abandoned fields seem to be the most suitable habitats for its establishment.  相似文献

Medeola virginiana, a forest understory herb, has been hypothesized to minimize competition among ramets by positioning ramets regularly in space (Bell, 1974). We have constructed a computer model that simulates vegetative spread in Medeola by incorporating the variation in growth form found in natural populations. This stochastic model, based on data in Cook (1988), includes variation in the number and type of daughter ramets, the distance between parent and daughter ramets, and the angle of divergence between the lines of growth of the parent and daughter rhizomes. Over a wide range of initial ramet densities, initial degrees of ramet dispersion, and intensities of ramet mortality, our simulations indicate that the growth pattern of M. virginiana leads to aggregated distributions of ramets with overlapping leaf canopies. The observed aggregation of ramets may result from the tendency for directional but variable growth in clones. Such variable growth calls into question adaptive interpretations based on deterministic models that utilize the mean values of growth parameters but ignore the highly variable nature of clonal growth.  相似文献

Studies in plant demography are primarily done at the level of ramets and typically collect ramet-related parameters such as ramet size, type and history. This approach ignores possible effects of factors associated with higher levels, such as genet or tussock. This is particularly important in perennial resprouting herbs with persistent root that consists of many ramets as interaction between ramets, both by competition and by resource sharing, are likely to be intense in these plants. This study investigates effects of tussock-level parameters (age, size and ramet position within tussock and ramet density) on performance of individual ramets in two tussock-forming resprouting herbs (Tanacetum vulgare and Centaurea jacea).The results show that position of a ramet within tussock did not affect ramet growth, but had significant effects on flowering and survival in both species. The direction of the effect differed between the two species; marginal ramets were more successful in T. vulgare, while central ramets were more successful in C. jacea. In addition, tussock age had a significant effect on ramet flowering and survival in T. vulgare. Both these effects are likely to be due to the more competitive life form of T. vulgare, which is restricted to temporary habitats with intense competition. C. jacea is a species of mown or grazed grasslands with lower productivity, which are more stable and where competition is weaker. The effects of the number of neighboring ramets and of the tussock size were significant, but often locality-specific.The results indicate that although many important effects of tussock-related parameters exist, their direction and magnitude differ between species or even populations and are thus not easily predictable. Neglecting these effects, however, is likely to make the demographic models weaker.  相似文献

The evolution of clonal growth is a widespread phenomenon among plant species, characterized by the production of genetically identical clonal fragments (ramets) via rhizomes or stolons that form an interconnected clonal organism (genet). Clonal plant species are known to differ in their investment into ramet production, and exhibit considerable variation in ramet morphology both within and among species. While patterns of resource allocation are thought to be linked to a number of plant characteristics, many analyses are limited by uncertainty in how clonal plants determine the morphology and resources allocated to new ramets. In this study, we attempted to discern what aspects of parent ramets best predicted resource allocation to new daughter ramets, and the relationship between resource allocation and daughter ramet rhizome morphology. We grew two sedge species, Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani and Eleocharis elliptica, in a greenhouse under two levels of fertilizer addition. By harvesting daughter ramets that had initiated stem production, yet remained aphotosynthetic, we were able to isolate parental investment into non-independent daughter ramets at a point where daughter ramet spacer length became fixed. Our results indicate that parent ramets allocated a non-linear proportion of parent rhizome biomass to the production of daughter ramets. Moreover, this relationship was unaffected by environmental nutrient availability. Daughter ramet biomass, in turn, was strongly correlated with daughter ramet spacer length. These observations shed light on key processes governing clonal growth in plants, and their potential application in unifying allocational and morphological perspectives to explore the fitness implications of variability in clonal growth.  相似文献

Sprouting is recognized as an important genet persistence strategy for clonal woody plants, but the role of sprouting may differ between species and between sexes, depending on physiological integration. We tested the effect of physiological integration on the mortality, recruitment and growth of the sprouting male and female ramets of two closely related dioecious shrubs of Lindera, in a field experiment using girdling manipulation. Although between-sex differences observed were obscure, we found between-species differences in the sprouting patterns. The rates of ramet mortality and recruitment were significantly lower for L. praecox than L. triloba. In L. praecox genets, the ramet production was low, and the main ramets might actively translocate assimilates towards the small sprouted ramets, which then facilitates high ramet growth and survival (sprout-nursing strategy). Meanwhile, in L. triloba genets, although many ramets were recruited, assimilate translocation from the main ramets to the sprouted ramets might be less abundant, which causes high ramet mortality (sprout-turnover strategy). For a more general knowledge of the various sprouting strategies in clonal plants, our study demonstrated that inter-specific comparisons using girdling experiments at the whole-plant level could reveal the role of physiological integration on the link between the sprouting pattern and above-ground structures of clonal plants.  相似文献

Arundo donax is a tall perennial reed. Once established, it spreads by producing new shoots (ramets) from rhizomes. We performed two separate experiments to test the hypotheses that temperature (7, 8, 14, 16, or 20 °C) and combinations of temperature and nitrate concentration (0, 0.3, 0.6,1.2, 2.4, 3.6, 4.8, and 6.0 mg/l nitrate) regulated the initiation of ramet production. No ramets emerged from rhizome sections at 7 or 8 °C, but ramets emerged at 14, 16, and 20 °C. Neither time to ramet emergence nor the number of ramets that emerged was influenced by nitrate level in the watering solution. We used the above results in combination with ramet emergence data from plants grown outdoors at Davis, California to develop degree-day equations for three separate ramet cohorts. When compared to ramet emergence from different plants in different years, there was very good agreement between predicted and actual ramet emergence indicating that these equations provide a realistic representation of processes involved in ramet emergence. Many factors may affect reproduction of animal-pollinated species. In this study, the effects of pollen limitation, attractive traits (flower number, plant height and flower width) and flowering phenological traits (flowering onset, duration and synchrony) on female reproduction, as well as the patterns of variation in fruit and seed production within plants, were investigated in Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” over two flowering seasons (2018 and 2019). Fruit set was very high (90%), and pollen supplementation did not increase fruit and seed production in either year, indicating no pollen limitation. Fruit set, ovule number per fruit and mean individual seed weight per fruit were not affected by any of the six attractive and phenological traits in either year, whereas seed number per fruit was related to the three attractive traits in one or both years. Seed number per plant was positively affected by the three attractive traits and best explained by flower number in both years, but the effect of each of the three phenological traits on seed number per plant differed between years. Within plants, the fruit set, ovule number, seed set and seed number per fruit declined from early- to late-opening flowers, presumably because of resource preemption, but the mean individual seed weight did not vary across the flowering sequence. Our study shows that attractive traits of Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” are more important than flowering phenological traits in the prediction of total seed production per plant.  相似文献

The response of clonal growth and ramet morphology to water depth (from 60 to 260 cm) and sediment type (sand versus organic clay) was investigated for the stoloniferous submersed macrophyte Vallisneria natans in an outdoor pond experiment. Results showed that water depth significantly affected clonal growth of V. natans in terms of clone weight, number of ramets, number of generations, clonal radius and stolon length. V. natans showed an optimal clonal growth at water depths of 110–160 cm, but at greater depths clonal growth was severely retarded. A high allometric effect was exhibited in ramet morphology. Along the sequentially produced ramet generations, ramet weight and plant height decreased while stolon length and the root:leaf weight ratio increased. When using ramet generations as covariate, sediment type rather than water depth more strongly affected the ramet characteristics. For plants grown in clay, ramet weight, ramet height and stolon length were greater, and plants exhibited lower root:leaf weight ratio. These data suggest that water depth and sediment type have differential effects on clonal growth of V. natans: Water depth appears primarily to affect numerical increase in ramets and spatial spread, whereas sediment type mainly affects biomass accumulation and biomass allocation.
