The influence of ectoparasitic water mite larvae (Arrenurus) on the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of forewing length and cell number in the foreweings of the damselfly Coenagrion puella has been investigated. We show a significant correlation between the FA of forewing length and the mite load. Most explanations for increases in FA implicate environmental stress combined with the inability of the genome to stabilize the phenotype. In contrast, our results demonstrate that FA could be the result of a very short-term impact during ontogenesis, due to chance parasitism.  相似文献

The effects of chlorine-organic insecticide endosulfane (thiodan) on phenotypic and genetic variation in four morphological traits of Drosophila melanogaster(wing length, thorax length, the number of orbital bristles and the number of sternopleural bristles) were examined. In addition, the effect of this pesticide on stability of development measured as fluctuating asymmetry of bilateral traits was estimated. On the medium with endosulfane, phenotypic variation of morphometric traits was significantly higher. No difference in fluctuating asymmetry between the stressed and the control samples was found. The among-line variance of morphometric traits of flies reared on the endosulfane-containing medium was significantly higher as compared to the corresponding variance under control conditions. The efficiency of using fluctuating asymmetry and phenotypic variation of morphometric and meristic traits as indicators of environmental stress in insect populations is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Although developmental instability (DI), measured as fluctuating asymmetry (FA), is expected to be positively related to environmental stress and negatively to habitat quality, the pattern found here was the reverse. Developmental instability of leaf traits (leaf width and vein distances within a leaf) was estimated (using two indices of FA: FA4 and σi 2) and compared between three populations of Plantago major L. (Plantaginaceae) from northern Serbia. Two of the populations are from chronically polluted areas (Karaburma & Zemun), while Crni Lug is from an unpolluted, natural area. Results obtained using both FA indices were the same; higher asymmetry levels in the unpolluted area than in the polluted sites, were found for both traits. Between the two polluted sites, FA values were significantly higher in Karaburma site for vein distances within a leaf. Concerning differences in FA4 values between samples, in two cases, results are similar to those found for σi 2 values, for vein distances within leaf. These are the first quantitative data on P. major indicating that (i) plants living in the stressful sites are more symmetrical and (ii) leaf FA for plant species with wide ecological distribution such as P. major should be considered as an ‘index of habitat quality.’  相似文献

The Response of Three Bacterial Populations to Pollution in a Stream   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Abstract Practical methods for biomonitoring of natural systems are still under development. Bacteria are potentially useful indicators of water quality because of their species diversity and ability to rapidly respond to changing environmental conditions. In this study, bacterial populations from unpolluted and polluted stream sites in two watersheds were compared to determine their suitability for use as environmental indicators. Upper Three Runs Creek and Four Mile Creek headwaters have had little anthropogenic disturbance, as opposed to lower Four Mile Creek which received thermal, radioactive, and chemical perturbations. Chemical and physical measurements provided evidence that seepage from holding ponds polluted Four Mile Creek. Polluted sites did not have altered total bacterial numbers but had decreased numbers of colony-forming units. Abundances of three bacterial species, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Burkholderia cepacia, and Pseudomonas putida, were determined by colony hybridization with species-specific rDNA probes. Contribution of A. calcoaceticus to the assemblage was higher at polluted sites, which indicated either tolerance of polluted conditions or the ability to utilize compounds existing at these sites to reach larger populations. No differences in B. cepacia populations were detected, and differences in P. putida populations could not be attributed solely to disturbance. The pollution of Four Mile Creek induced differences in bacterial populations that could be monitored using the described approach. Received: 24 September 1996; Accepted: 20 December 1996  相似文献

Wind stress may significantly change plant damage by aerial pollutants. However, almost no information exists on pollution-induced changes in wind regime around the strong emission sources. Wind speed, measured in industrial barrens adjacent to the nickel-copper smelter at Monchegorsk (Kola Peninsula, NW Russia), was two to three times as high as in the slightly polluted and nearly unpolluted forests. The ratio between the maximum wind velocity within 30 s and the average velocity of that time interval showed no temporal variation, thus characterising the wind regime. This ratio was highest in unpolluted forests, suggesting the predominance of gusty winds; in industrial barrens the maximum wind speed was only slightly higher than the average value. Since topography did not explain the spatial variation in wind regime, I conclude that my data represent the first direct evidence for distinct changes in wind regime caused by pollution-induced habitat deterioration. The results suggest that initial (partly pollution-induced) forest disturbance causes secondary effects (like increased snow evaporation, followed by soil freezing and plant damage) that may enhance further disturbance in a positive feedback fashion.  相似文献

Effects induced on wild populations by recurrent environmental contamination may difficult the ecological risk assessment of punctual pollution events such as oil spills. Here, the issue was addressed by comparing the health status of Pomatoschistus microps populations from four NW Iberian estuaries, using an integrated chemical–biological monitoring. Despite high seasonal variability, the parameters measured discriminated estuaries with different contamination levels and associated biological effects with chemical and abiotic stress. The decreased health status of fish from polluted sites strengthens the need of considering pollution-induced background effects and seasonal variability when assessing impacts and risks of oil and other chemical spills.  相似文献

Allozyme variation was determined in two land snail species (Cepaea nemoralis and Succinea putris) from four localities in northern Belgium. In each locality we selected a polluted and a nearby, less-polluted, reference plot. We examined whether (i) genetic variability differed between the polluted and reference plots, (ii) populations from polluted plots experienced recent bottlenecks, and (iii) certain allele or genotype frequencies were associated with the pollution. Our results suggest that (i) about 13% of the genetic differentiation in C. nemoralis and 5% in S. putris was due to differences among polluted and reference plots, (ii) polluted and reference plots had comparable levels of genetic variation, but in C. nemoralis observed heterozygosities were higher in polluted plots, (iii) most plots showed significant evidence for recent bottlenecks, irrespective of the degree of pollution, so that bottlenecks seem poor indicators of pollution-induced stress in land snails, and (iv) mutagenic or pollution-induced modifications did not seem to account for new allozyme variants in polluted sites. The observed patterns of genetic variation may be explained by the action of genetic drift, pollution-mediated selection, restricted gene flow, or a combination of these processes.  相似文献

The increase in human activities that leads to wildlife decline and species extinction poses an urgent need for simple indicators of environmental stress in animal populations. Several studies have suggested that fluctuating asymmetry (FA) can be an easy, direct measure of developmental instability because it is associated to environmental stress and, as such, it can be a useful indicator of population disturbance. We examined three different morphological traits in urban and rural populations of the common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis) to test whether anthropogenic disturbance causes an increase in FA. Compared to rural populations, urban ones showed higher levels of FA in all analyzed traits, thus providing evidence that FA can respond to anthropogenic disturbance. However, we also found significant differences in FA among traits, where femoral pores and subdigital lamellae, traits with a functional relevance, were more stable developmentally compared to supracilliar granules which have no evident function. Unsigned FA [abs(right-left)] exhibited significant, but weak, positive correlations among traits, indicating that developmental noise does not have a uniform effect across characters and thus questioning the view of developmental stability as an organism-wide property. The degree of signed FA (right-left) was more similar between structurally associated traits, possibly as an outcome of morphological integration. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that FA can be a reliable indicator of disturbance provided that it is analyzed on multiple traits simultaneously and examined at the population level.  相似文献

As habitat disturbance and inbreeding increasingly stress natural populations, ecologists are in urgent need of simple estimators to measure their impact. It has been argued that developmental instability (DI) could be such a measure. Observed associations between DI and environmental or genetic stress, however, are largely inconsistent. We here test whether an interaction between habitat disturbance and inbreeding could, at least partly, explain these discordant patterns. We therefore studied individual estimates of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and of inbreeding in three populations of the critically endangered Taita thrush that are differentially exposed to habitat disturbance following severe forest fragmentation. As predicted, the relationship between DI and inbreeding was pronounced under high levels of disturbance, but weak or nonexistent under less disturbed conditions. Examining this relationship with mean d2, an allelic distance estimator assumed to reflect ancestral inbreeding, did not reveal any significant trend, hence suggesting that inbreeding effects in the Taita thrush are fairly recent.  相似文献

We report normal ranges of haematological indices in healthy Corydoras paleatus from an unpolluted area. Haematological parameters studied include: erythrocyte counts (Er), haematocrit (Ht), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) and mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC). Normal red blood parameters did not change according to maturation stages, sex or seasons. Then, we compared them with those coming from fish captured in a site polluted by sewage. Fish exposed to pollution presented significantly higher values of Er, Ht, Hb, MCH and MCHC than those captured in an unpolluted area. Discriminant analysis showed that Hb is a key parameter to point out differences between populations exposed to different environmental conditions. We suggest that haematological values of C. paleatus, registered during this study, could be used as biomarkers in future works evaluating the incidence of environmental stress on fish as well as pointing out changes in the water quality.  相似文献

Developmental instability in the form of increased fluctuating asymmetry can be caused by either genetic or environmental stress. Because extinctions can be attributed broadly to these factors, fluctuating asymmetry may provide a sensitive tool for detecting such stresses. We studied the level of fluctuating asymmetry of flowers of a perennial outcrossing plant species, Lychnis viscaria, both in natural and common-garden populations. The degree of flower asymmetry was higher in small, isolated, and marginal populations of the species range. These marginal populations also were the most homozygous. In the core area of the species' range, flowers were more symmetrical The level of asymmetry was correlated with both population size and heterozygosity. However, a partial correlation analysis revealed that when the impact of population size was controlled for, there was a negative relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and heterozygosity, whereas when controlling for heterozygosity, no relationship between population size and fluctuating asymmetry was found. This indicates that genetic consequences of small population size probably underlie the relationship between the level of asymmetry and population size. Results from a transplantation experiment showed that individuals subjected to a higher environmental stress had an increased level of asymmetry compared to control plants. In the common-garden conditions the level of fluctuating asymmetry did not differ between the central and marginal populations. This suggests that presumably both genetic and environmental factors affected to the higher level of asymmetry among marginal populations compared to central ones. In all we conclude that even though fluctuating asymmetry seems to be a sensitive tool for detecting stresses, results from studies focusing on only one factor should be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

We studied the effects of aerial pollution on the expression of Delayed Inducible Resistance (DIR) against herbivores in the boreal willow Salix borealis , growing naturally around the nickel-copper smelter at Monchegorsk (NW Russia). In slightly polluted and clean sites, the manual defoliation (simulated insect herbivory) of willows resulted in the development of DIR, which was expressed in the post-treatment year as (i) a decrease in leaf damage, (ii) the dispersion of grazing damage within a plant, and (iii) a decrease in foliar quality, detected by the adverse effects on the larval relative growth rate of the autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata . At the same time, in heavily and moderately polluted sites these effects were not observed, suggesting that DIR in plants growing under pollution impact was not expressed. Since DIR may be one of the important feedbacks regulating the population dynamics of herbivores, the disturbance of this feedback by pollution-induced environmental deterioration may contribute to the high densities of many herbivorous insects in polluted areas.  相似文献

Butterfly wing characteristics are extensively used as model system in studies of development, quantitative genetics and phenotypic plasticity. In spite of its evolutionary relevance, however, the effect of stress on the expression of genetic variation itself has only rarely been studied. In this paper, we explore genetic variation of wing characteristics of the Speckled wood Pararge aegeria along a host plant drought stress gradient. Forewing area, basal and distal degree of melanization and the area of five yellow wing spots were measured. We found an increase in (additive) genetic variation in degree of melanization at higher drought stress, and a similar, yet non-significant, relationship for forewing size. As a result, both the upper limits of the narrow-sense heritability and the coefficient of additive genetic variation of wing size and melanization increased with drought stress. Patterns for the different yellow wing spots were less consistent, suggesting trait-specificity in the relationships between genetic variation and environmental stress.  相似文献

In the present study, developmental stability of leaf traits was examined in three natural populations of Plantago major L. (ssp. major), representing two polluted environments (Karaburma and Zemun) and an unpolluted area (Crni Lug). Developmental stability was assessed as fluctuating asymmetry (FA). The magnitude of FA is believed to reflect differences in the ability of individuals to buffer their development in natural populations. We hypothesized that there are differences within characters and among characters in response to environmental conditions. Significant patterns of asymmetry correlations and asymmetry changes were detected both within characters and between characters. The manova results revealed a significant effect of individual and a significant individual × environment interaction on actual asymmetry (logLi ? logRi) and on the amount of asymmetry |(logLi ? logRi)| for leaf width and vein distances within a leaf. Over time, statistically significant and positive correlations of the FA values were detected for each trait separately per sample (population). For both leaf traits, there were differences for (logLi ? logRi) and |(logLi ? logRi)| asymmetry values among individuals within samples in response to yearly variations. Statistically significant and negative correlations for (logLi ? logRi) versus |(logLi ? logRi)| asymmetries were detected for both leaf traits. In summary, our results highlight the importance of differences in the ability of individuals to buffer their development under different environmental conditions and point to the concept that developmental stability is character specific.  相似文献

Asymmetry patterns across the distribution range: does the species matter?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An important question in evolutionary ecology is whether different populations across a species range, from core to periphery, experience different levels of stress. The estimation of developmental instability has been proposed as a useful tool for quantifying the degree of environmental and genetic stress that individuals experience during their development. Fluctuating asymmetry, the unsigned difference between the two sides of a bilaterally symmetrical trait, has been suggested to reflect the levels of developmental instability in a population. As such, it has been proposed as a useful tool for estimating changes in developmental instability and in stress response in populations across a range of environmental conditions. Recent studies focusing mostly on birds have detected increasing fluctuating asymmetry from core to periphery across the distribution range, suggesting that peripheral populations may experience higher levels of environmental and/or genetic stress. Most of these comparisons were done for single taxa across a single gradient. However, different species are predicted to respond differently to environmental shifts across the range. We compared asymmetry patterns in wing morphology in populations of two Euchloe butterfly species across their opposing ranges in Israel. Contrary to the patterns observed in birds across the same gradient, bilateral asymmetry did not increase or shift towards the periphery in either of the butterfly species. If fluctuating asymmetry in these traits reflects levels of stress, these results may partly reflect the fact that the range of these two butterfly species is limited by the distribution of their host plant, rather than by abiotic environmental variables. In addition, developing pierids can diapause during harsh seasons and can persist in resource‐rich patches, thus minimizing the environmental stress perceived by developing individuals. We conclude that accounting for differences in species’ life histories and range‐limiting factors is necessary in order to better predict patterns of developmental instability across spatial and environmental gradients. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, 81 , 313–324.  相似文献

We explored the impacts of industrial air pollution on the behaviour of the leafmining moth Stigmella lapponica (Wocke) (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) by comparing the characteristics of larval gallery mines in mountain birch [Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii (Orlova) Hämet‐Ahti (Betulaceae)] leaves collected from unpolluted forests and from heavily polluted industrial barrens surrounding the copper‐nickel smelter in Monchegorsk in north‐western Russia. Population density of S. lapponica, survival of larvae, length of the completed mine, and width of its terminal part did not differ between polluted and unpolluted sites. Females in unpolluted sites only rarely (16%) oviposited on the apical half of the leaf and the larval mortality in mines that started in the apical part of the leaf was 83%. A significantly larger (38%) proportion of mines started in the apical half of the leaves in polluted sites, and the larval mortality in these mines was only 45%. The between‐habitat difference in the choice of the oviposition sites by S. lapponica is the first demonstration of the adaptive plasticity of oviposition behaviour in a leafmining insect. This difference was not explained by specific leaf weight which did not vary within leaves. Larvae mining in polluted leaves extended 25% farther between turns, and the galleries turned more sharply than in unpolluted leaves. This result confirms the abilities of leafmining larvae to evaluate the quality of the ingested food and adjust their behaviour accordingly. Thus, pollution modifies both the preference of S. lapponica females for oviposition sites within a birch leaf and the behaviour of S. lapponica larvae mining these leaves. This is one of the first records of changes in insect behaviour in natural environment disturbed by industrial pollution.  相似文献

Previous studies show that Masson pine (Pinus massoniana L.) stands grown at the industrially-polluted site have experienced unprecedented growth decline, but the causal mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, to understand the mechanisms of growth decline of Mason pine strands under pollution stresses, we determined the reactive oxygen species levels and chemical composition of the current-year (C) and one-year-old (C + 1) needles, and calculated the needle construction costs (CCmass) of Masson pine trees grown at an industrially-polluted site and an unpolluted remote site. Pine trees grown at the polluted site had significantly higher levels of hydroxyl radical and superoxide anion in their needles than those grown at the unpolluted site, and the former trees eventually exhibited needle early senescence. The contents of lipids, soluble phenolics and lignins in C and C + 1 needles were significantly higher at the polluted site than at the unpolluted site, but the total amounts of non-construction carbohydrates were lower in non-polluted needles than in polluted needles. Elevated levels of the reactive oxygen species and early senescence in polluted needles together led to significant increases in CCmass and a longer payback time. We infer that the lengthened payback time and needle early senescence under pollution stress may reduce the Masson pine tree growth and consequently accelerate tree decline.  相似文献
