To understand the significance of the trail pheromone used in chemical communication of the leaf-cutting ants Atta opaciceps we investigated, under laboratory conditions, the trail-following behaviour of different castes. We observed a clear behavioural discrimination of conspecific venom gland extract of foraging ants from those of other species. Additionally, we determined the pheromone composition of A. opaciceps venom gland secretion using a two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Chemical analyses revealed the presence of three nitrogen-containing compounds, identified as 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 3-ethyl-2,5-dimethylpyrazine and methyl 4-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylate (M4MPC). Four different bioassays performed with workers from different castes of A. opaciceps suggested that the trail pheromone elicits the trail-following behaviour in conspecifics of all castes, but the foragers respond more strongly to their own pheromone than to that of other castes (gardeners, generalists and soldiers). In addition, A. opaciceps foragers follow the trails made with the venom gland extracts of the unrelated Acromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus foragers as well as they follow the trails made with their own venom gland extract. M4MPC was identified to be the most abundant and the most behaviourally active component of the venom gland extract of A. opaciceps foragers.

The Neotropical species Pachycondyla marginata conducts well-organized predatory raids on the termite species Neocapritermes opacus and frequently emigrates to new nest sites. During both activities the ants employ chemical trail communication. The trail pheromone orginates from the pygidial gland. Among the substances identified in the pygidial gland secretions, only citronellal was effective as a trail pheromone. Isopulegol elicited an increase in locomotory activity in the ants and may function as a synergist recruitment signal. The chemical signal is enhanced by a shaking display performed by the recruiting ant.  相似文献

Abstract:  Substrate distribution was studied in three adult colonies of the leaf-cutting ant Atta bisphaerica Forel, 1908 using dye. Some supply holes were mapped using baits made from small plastic straws impregnated with citric pulp. Two holes, equidistant from one another, were then selected in each nest. The colonies were excavated completely 24 h after bait placement. During excavation, fungus chambers were checked for dye. We observed that the dyed baits were distributed in all sectors and at all depths regardless of where the baits had been placed. This supported the hypothesis that toxic baits placed in a single supply hole are uniformly distributed throughout the colony.  相似文献

An attempt was made to describe the principle signals involved in the recognition of nymphs by Tapinoma workers. A behavioural measure, the way and extent to which workers transported different objects presented to them, was used to quantify this relationship. These objects were homo- or heterospecific nymphs, or different baits. Two types of test were generally used in such studies: retrieval — bringing back objects to the nest, and removal – transport of objects during displacement of the nest. The second type of test was used in this study. The results, in decreasing order of recognition were as follows. Tapinoma workers transport homospecific and Tetramorium nymphs at 100%. The smaller nymphs of Solenopsis impregnated with Tapinoma extract were transported at 77%. The nymphs of Solenopsis with their own odour were transported at 21%, paper impregnated. with Tapinoma extract at 12%, while ‘odourless’ Tapinoma nymphs and neutral paper were not transported at all. These results imply an intervention of both physical and chemical factors, the threshold significance of signals and their global implication depending on the test situation and its disturbing effect. They also depend on the nature of the different objects presented in combination; Tapinoma workers transport heterospecific brood much less readily in the presence of their own brood. The attractiveness of nymphs is not an all or none phenomenon. In a study of the adoption of homospecific nymphs from another nest, this gradation was apparent in the distribution of nymphs in the nest and their order of transport during removal tests; certain nymphs were left aside in the first 3 days of presentation, were amongst the last to be transported during removal, and then by the most active workers. The perception of the brood by the workers may thus occur at different levels: (1) Perception of a factor that may be vaguely defined as ‘transportable object’ in a removal test — with objects of type ‘nymph’ for example; (2) perception of the species; (3) perception of the colony. The worker ant during its life acquires a certain ‘knowledge’ of its own brood through familiarization, which expresses itself in terms of specific patterns of care for the brood, but this attention, although given preferentially to the brood, is not exclusive under stress.  相似文献

Summary The behaviour of adultHomoeusa acuminata on trails of its hostLasius fuliginosus was investigated both in the field and in the laboratory. The beetles were active from May to September, accurately following the foraging trails of their hosts up to 20 metres from the nest. Most of the time, they were ignored by the ants, but if attacked they raised their abdomen as a possible appeasement or defensive behaviour. On trails the beetles most probably act as food robbers, feeding on prey collected by ants. The following method, called stowaway behaviour, was used by the beetles: when a beetle encountered an ant carrying a prey back to the nest it jumped on the prey, probably feeding on it while being transported.Laboratory experiments on circular artificial trails demonstrated thatH. acuminata follows a water extract of hindguts of the ants, the source of the trail pheromone. Both beetles and ants responded to an artificial trail of 0.03 hindgut equivalent per cm, but the mean distance followed by the beetles was about twelve times higher than that covered by the ants themselves. In contrast, experiments with solutions of the six fatty acids reported as the active components of the trail pheromone showed that the beetles did not respond at all, and that the ants only respond to the fatty acids at a very high concentration.  相似文献

The enhancement of bait for the control of grass-cutting ants was investigated using two species of grass-cutting ant, Atta bisphaerica (Forel) and Atta capiguara (Gon?alves) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Bait was applied in loose piles to obtain a direct relationship between ant attraction and bait harvest. Enhancement with alarm pheromone compounds significantly increased the attractiveness and harvest of bait under certain conditions. A large proportion of the ants attracted to the enhanced bait were minor workers. These ants rarely transport bait because of their small size, and so it may be possible to increase the effect of bait enhancement by using smaller bait granules. Foragers of A. capiguara were less inclined to transport citrus-pulp bait than were those of Atta laevigata (Fr. Smith), a species that also harvests dicotyledonous plants. This emphasizes the importance of developing a bait matrix that is more acceptable to grass-cutting species. Nevertheless, the results suggest that alarm pheromone compounds have significant potential to improve the efficacy of baits for the control of grass-cutting ants.  相似文献

Workers of the ant Amblyopone reclinata employ solitary prey retrieval when prey is small, but recruit nestmates to large prey. In the latter case, the scout forager paralyses the prey with its powerful sting, and quickly returns to the nest. During this homeward journey, it deposits a trail pheromone, that originates from the well developed footprint glands in its hindlegs. Recruited workers follow this trail to reach the prey, which is then jointly dragged to the nest. The footprint gland is only found in ants of the genus Amblyopone, and is formed by a glandular differentiation of the dorsal tegumental epidermis in the hindleg pretarsi. The secretory epithelium is approximately 15–20 μm thick, and shows apical microvilli and basal invaginations. The cytoplasm contains numerous mitochondria. Narrow pores with a diameter of 0.1 μm run through the cuticle, although they were not seen to open at the pretarsus external surface. Careful observation of trail-laying workers reveals that during trail-laying the hindleg pretarsus is twisted in a peculiar position, which explains how secretion from the dorsally located footprint gland is deposited onto the substrate.  相似文献

Leaf-cutting ants are important economic pests of the Neotropics, and the most common method of control involves the use of insecticidal baits. Baits that are currently available exhibit low attractiveness to grass-cutting species, thus there is a need to develop improved baits. The potential for using alarm pheromone compounds to enhance the attractiveness and subsequent harvest of baits was examined for two economically important species of grass-cutting ant, Atta bisphaerica (Forel) and Atta capiguara (Goncalves). Compounds of the alarm pheromone were applied to rubber septa that were then sealed inside plastic sachets together with citrus pulp-based bait. The best candidate compound for bait enhancement was 4-methyl-3-heptanone. This compound significantly increased the attractiveness of bait sachets to both species. It also appeared to improve the discovery of nearby unenhanced sachets. However, 4-methyl-3-heptanone resulted in only a slight and non-significant improvement in bait harvest. Enhanced and unenhanced bait sachets were applied at a number of positions to obtain an improvement in harvest, but without success. The possible reasons for the lack of an enhancement of harvest and the potential for using alarm pheromone compounds as leaf-cutting ant bait enhancers are discussed.  相似文献

Experimental indoxacarb powder and gel baits were evaluated in the laboratory, and a gel bait was evaluated in subsequent field studies against the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). In continuous exposure tests, LT50 values were 1.90 and 1.10 d for 0.25 and 1% indoxacarb powder baits, respectively. However, 0.25% indoxacarb gel bait had an LT50 value of 0.68 d, similar to a 0.05% abamectin gel bait formulated with the same bait base. There was no difference in toxicity between fresh and 7-d-old gel bait deposits. A pyrethroid-resistant strain of German cockroaches was significantly resistant to both abamectin and indoxacarb gel baits. Gel bait contained approximately 40% water, desiccated rapidly at 25-28 degrees C and 30-45% RH, but did not rehydrate when held at 56.7% RH for 3 d. Powder indoxacarb baits contained <1% water and did not desiccate or gain water. Indoxacarb gel bait (0.25%) was relatively nonrepellent (approximately 30%) and had positive maximum performance index values (approximately 100) in Ebeling choice box experiments. In field experiments in cockroach-infested kitchens, the 0.25% indoxacarb gel bait significantly reduced visual counts of German cockroaches approximately 74% at 3 d and >95% at 14 d. Indoxacarb baits are toxic, relatively nonrepellent, and can significantly reduce German cockroach populations.  相似文献

The behaviour of those polistine wasps which found their nests by swarming, suggests that these species use trail pheromones for leading the swarm to the location chosen for the new nest. Apart from a recent report regarding the ropalidine Polybioides tabidus, where the pheromone is thought to originate from the Dufour gland, nothing is known about the chemistry of such pheromones. Polybia sericea is the only species for which the source of the trail pheromone, the Richards' gland, is known with certainty. The chemistry of the Richards' gland secretion of this species has been investigated in the present work and shown to be a complex mixture where the major compounds are alkyl and aromatic aldehydes, fatty acids, 3-phenylpropanoic acid, ketones, a macrolactone, a pyranone compound and nerolidol.  相似文献

The ponerine ant Ectatomma ruidum, though previously reported to possess only rudimentary recruitment ability, was found to lay chemical trails for mass recruitment to rich or difficult food sources. The pheromone originates from the Dufour's gland, a new source of trail pheromones in the primitive ant subfamily Ponerinae. During nest emigrations, E. ruidum practices stereotyped social carrying in the myrmicine mode. The discovery of this form of social carrying and of a recruitment pheromone in the Dufour's gland secretions support the hypothesis that the subfamily Myrmicinae is derived from an ectatommine ancestor. Other communication behaviors exhibited by E. ruidum include exchange of liquid food carried between the mandibles, chemical alarm communication, nest entrance marking, and an additional social carrying posture previously unknown in ants.  相似文献

Summary Workers of Monomorium minimum forage above-ground for dead arthropods. Small particles (<1 mg) are retrieved individually, but larger particles stimulate recruitment and are dissected by groups of workers. The recruitment pheromone originates in the Dufour's gland and the number of ants responding to a trail varies with pheromone concentration. When ants of other species are encountered at food resources, workers of M. minimum gaster-flag and extrude an irritating poison gland secretion from the sting. This chemical interference delays invasion by competitors and prolongs the period during which the colony can dissect and retrieve pieces of the food resource. M. minimum recruits at higher temperatures than sympatric ant species. The probability of interference at food baits rises from 5% to 100% when they become too large for a single worker to carry. The probability of food resource loss is higher for baits of intermediate weight (x=18.1 mg) than for those of low weight (x=0.1 mg) or high weight (x=403.1 mg).  相似文献

The search for food in the French subterranean termite Reticulitermes santonensis De Feytaud is organized in part by chemical trails laid with the secretion of their abdominal sternal gland. Trail-laying and -following behavior of R. santonensis was investigated in bioassays. During foraging for food termites walk slowly (on average, 2.3 mm/s) and lay a dotted trail by dabbing the abdomen at intervals on the ground. When food is discovered they return at a quick pace (on average, 8.9 mm/s) to the nest, laying a trail for recruiting nestmates to the food source. While laying this recruitment trail the workers drag the abdomen continuously on the ground. The recruitment trail is highly attractive: it is followed within a few seconds, by more nestmates, and at a quicker pace (on average, 6.4 mm/s) than foraging trails (on average, 2.9 mm/s). The difference between foraging and recruitment trails in R. santonensis could be attributed to different quantities of trail pheromone. A caste-specific difference in trail pheromone thresholds, with workers of R. santonensis being more sensitive to trails than soldiers, was also documented: soldiers respond only to trails with a high concentration of trail pheromone.  相似文献

The German yellowjacket, Vespula germanica (F.) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), was introduced into Australia in 1959 and has established throughout southern Australia. In urban environments, V. germanica is frequently a nuisance pest at public gatherings and to homeowners. In native environments, it has the potential to pose a threat to native invertebrates. The current practice for controlling the wasps is nest destruction with pesticide. However, locating the nest(s) is not always practical or possible. Meat baits impregnated with an insecticide that foraging wasps cut and carry back to the nest offer a means of suppressing wasps where the nest sites are unknown. The success of meat baits depends on the attractiveness and acceptance of the meat to the wasp and the mode of action of the insecticide. Our objective was to determine wasp preference and acceptance of five processed meats: canned chicken or fish and freeze-dried chicken, fish, or kangaroo. We found that more wasps visited and took freeze-dried kangaroo and canned chicken than the other baits. Canned and freeze-dried fish were similarly preferred, and freeze-dried chicken was the least attractive and accepted by foraging wasps. Our findings demonstrate that wasps prefer some processed meats and hence take more loads back to the nest. By combining a suitable insecticide with a meat bait preferred by wasps, the likelihood of effective suppression of nuisance wasp populations should be increased.  相似文献

Species colonization patterns on corpses and the frequency of carrion fly oviposition and larviposition are affected by decomposition stage and previous maggot colonization. This study investigated these effects on meat bait colonization by Victorian Diptera of forensic importance. Bait treatments were: 'aged' (aged for 4 days at 22 °C, allowing some decomposition); 'nutrient-depleted' [aged for 4 days at 22 °C with feeding Calliphora vicina (Robineau-Desvoidy) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae]; 'extract' (fresh bait mixed with liquid formed by feeding C. vicina larvae), and 'fresh' (untreated control bait). Statistical analysis (α = 0.05) revealed that colonization frequency differed significantly among treatments (Welch's F(3,18.83) = 4.66, P < 0.05). Post hoc tests showed that fresh and extract baits were colonized extensively throughout the experiment with no significant difference, whereas the colonization of nutrient-depleted baits was significantly lower. This suggests that larval digestive enzymes, larval excreta and cuticular hydrocarbons have less effect on colonizing Diptera than the nutritional content of meat. The colonization of aged baits did not differ significantly from that of fresh, extract or nutrient-depleted baits. A further experiment testing 'very aged' (aged for 8 days at 28 °C), 'larvae-added' (fresh bait with C. vicina larvae added before placement) and 'fresh' (untreated control) baits revealed that very aged baits were colonized significantly less frequently than either fresh or larvae-added baits (Welch's F(2, 6.17) = 17.40, P < 0.05).  相似文献

Bumble bees alert to food with pheromone from tergal gland   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Foragers of Bombus terrestris are able to alert their nestmates to the presence of food sources. It has been supposed that this happens at least partially through the distribution of a pheromone inside the nest. We substantiate this claim using a behavioral test in which an alerting signal is transmitted from one colony to another by long distance air transport, so excluding all other modalities of information exchange. We then investigated the source of the pheromone and were able to show that a hexane extract from tergites V-VII of bumble bee workers elicits higher activity, like a successful forager does. Extracts from other glands, such as the mandibular, labial, hypopharyngeal, and Dufour's gland as well as extracts from other parts of the cuticle had no effect. This suggests that bumble bees possess a pheromone-producing gland, similar to the Nasanov gland in honey bees. Indeed, an extract from the honey bee Nasanov gland also proved to alert bumble bee workers, suggesting a possible homology of the glands.  相似文献

Foragers of several species of stingless bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae and Meliponini) deposit pheromone marks in the vegetation to guide nestmates to new food sources. These pheromones are produced in the labial glands and are nest and species specific. Thus, an important question is how recruited foragers recognize their nestmates’ pheromone in the field. We tested whether naïve workers learn a specific trail pheromone composition while being recruited by nestmates inside the hive in the species Scaptotrigona pectoralis. We installed artificial scent trails branching off from trails deposited by recruiting foragers and registered whether newly recruited bees follow these trails. The artificial trails were baited with trail pheromones of workers collected from foreign S. pectoralis colonies. When the same foreign trail pheromone was presented inside the experimental hives while recruitment took place a significant higher number of bees followed the artificial trails than in experiments without intranidal presentation. Our results demonstrate that recruits of S. pectoralis can learn the composition of specific trail pheromone bouquets inside the nest and subsequently follow this pheromone in the field. We, therefore, suggest that trail pheromone recognition in S. pectoralis is based on a flexible learning process rather than being a genetically fixed behaviour.  相似文献

Abstract: Six bait matrices were tested for palatability to the ants Iridomyrmex purpureus and I. rufoniger gp sp., which are important pests of citrus in south‐eastern Australia. Granulated citrus pulp and rice bran impregnated with brown sugar were not accepted by either species, but ground dry dog food and ground insects (with or without added sugar) were highly attractive to both ant species. The ground dog food was impregnated with various toxicants at concentrations of up to 1% (w/w) and tested for palatability to both ant species. Technical grade pyriproxyfen, fipronil, and fenoxycarb were incorporated using organic solvents, whereas formulated fenoxycarb (Insegar®) was incorporated as an aqueous suspension prior to drying and granulation. Relative to the blank samples (carrier solvents only), bait acceptance by I. purpureus was not significantly reduced (P > 0.05) by any of the treatments except 1% technical fenoxycarb. Bait acceptance by I. rufoniger gp sp. was significantly suppressed by 0.2% fipronil, but not by higher concentrations. When water was used as the carrier solvent the blank sample was significantly (P < 0.05) less attractive to I. purpureus than the untreated control, suggesting that wetting of dog food‐based baits in field situations may irreversibly reduce their attractiveness. Laboratory colonies were used in choice and no‐choice tests to assess the efficacy of dog food baits containing fipronil (0.05–0.2% w/w). The corrected mortality for I. purpureus ranged from 88 to 100% and from 90 to 97% in the no‐choice and choice tests, respectively. In no‐choice tests I. rufoniger gp sp. corrected mortality varied from 52 to 60%, but in choice tests the corrected mortality did not exceed 26%. Ground dog food containing fipronil (0.05–0.2% w/w) has the potential to provide effective control of I. purpureus in citrus orchards, but alternative toxicants or lower fipronil concentrations may be required for control of I. rufoniger gp sp.  相似文献

Summary. A study was made of variations in size-matching in M. barbarus during transport of food to the nest. The effects of various factors were studied. Ants showed low selectivity at the food source, with both natural and with baits. This low initial selectivity tended to increase as seed fragments were transported along the foraging-trail to the nest; by the end of the trail, a very high degree of correlation was recorded between ant mass and load mass (r = 0.64, p < 0.001). This increase in correlation between ant mass and load mass may be brought about by exchanges of loads between workers along the length of the foraging trail. We have shown that there exists an inverse relationship between the recruitment rate to a food patch and size-matching. The most important population foragers factors affecting size-matching are the variation in load size, followed by the variation in worker size.  相似文献
