Salinity had generally little influence on the water content of different parts of cowpea(Vigna sinensis L.), calabrese(Brassica oleracea L. var.botrylis) and red radish(Raphanus salivus L.) plants. Salinity showed a promotive effect on the growth of cowpea, while in calabrese the effect was either promotive or depressive depending upon the concentration of the NaCl, and in red radish plants salinity progressively suppressed growth. Total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sodium contents of cowpea leaves were not affected by salinity treatments, while in calabrese and red radish leaves the contents of N, P and K were generally decreased as the salinity level increased. Gibberellin (GA3) applied to salt-treated plants had either a stimulatory or inhibitory effect on the growth, water content and contents of N, P, K and Na in the leaves depending upon the plant type, the concentration of GA3 and level of salinity.

Silicon improves salinity tolerance in wheat plants
Durum wheat (Triticum durum cv. Gediz-75) and bread wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Izmir-85) were grown in a complete nutrient solution in a growth room to investigate effect of silicone supplied to the nutrient solution on plants grown at salt stress. The experiment was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two levels of NaCl in nutrient solution, 0 and 100 mM, and two levels of silicone (Si) in nutrient solution, 0.25 and 0.50 mM, as Na2SiO3. The plants grown at 100 mM NaCl produced less dry matter and chlorophyll content than those without NaCl. Supplementary Si at both 0.25 and 0.5 mM ameliorated the negative effects of salinity on plant dry matter and chlorophyll content. Membrane permeability and proline content in leaves increased with addition of 100 mM NaCl and these increases were decreased with Si treatments. Sodium (Na) concentration in plant tissues increased in both leaves and roots of plants in the high NaCl treatment and Si treatments lowered significantly the concentrations of Na in both leaves and roots. Bread wheat was more tolerant to salinity than durum wheat. The accumulation of Na in roots indicates a possible mechanism whereby bread wheat copes with salinity in the rooting medium and/or may indicate the existence of an inhibition mechanism of Na transport to leaves. Concentrations of both Ca and K were lower in the plants grown at high NaCl than in those in the control treatment and these two element concentrations were increased by Si treatments in both shoots and roots but remained lower than control values in most cases.

The content of free and conjugated polyamines (PA) was studied in the leaves of secondary shoots and in roots of the facultative halophyte Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. under salinity. Plants were grown in water culture and at the age of 10 weeks were subjected to salinity stress by a single introduction of NaCl into nutrient medium to a final concentration of 400 mM. In 0, 6, 24, and 48 h, the content of free, HClO4-soluble, and HClO4-insoluble conjugates of PA were measured in leaves and roots. The levels of free and conjugated PA in the roots of control plants and plants subjected to salinity stress were higher than in the leaves. In response to salinity shock, the content of all forms of spermine (Spm), particularly its HClO4-soluble conjugates, increased in roots and leaves. In contrast, the content of Spm precursors, putrescine (Put) and spermidine (Spd), as well as their HClO4-soluble conjugates, decreased. Salinity treatment elevated the content of free cadaverine both in roots and leaves, whereas the content of its conjugated forms decreased, which might suggest transition of conjugated forms of cadaverine into the free form. The product of oxidative degradation of Spm and Spd, 1,3-diaminopropane (Dap), was absent in leaves, whereas the content of free and conjugated forms of this diamine in roots increased under salinity conditions. The obtained data indicate organ specificity for the content of free and conjugated forms of PA, as well as their active role in adaptation of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum to salinity shock.

Salinity caused a consistent reduction in the growth of cowpea plants and water content in their leaves. The total as well as the pigment fractions, except carotenoids, exhibited lower values than those of control plants at almost all salinity levels. With the rise of salinization, the total nitrogen and potassium contents in the leaves were decreased but the sodium content was increased and phosphorus content was not significantly affected as compared with the controls. The application of IAA to salt-treated plants increased the water content in the leaves but it had no effect on the number of leaves and the stem length. The pigment contents in the leaves were either promoted or inhibited with the application of IAA, depending upon the level of salinization. The application of IAA to plants irrigated with water of the highest salinity level was effective in increasing the potassium content in the leaves as compared with the control, but it had no effect on the other mineral elements.

Antioxidant defense in the leaves of C3 and C4 plants under salinity stress
The effect of salt stress (50, 100 and 150 m M of NaCl) on the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC. 1.15.1.1), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC. 1.11.1.11), glutathione reductase (GR, EC. 1.6.4.2) enzymes and also on the rate of lipid peroxidation in terms of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) content and photosynthetic capacity in two wheat (C3 plants) and two maize (C4 plants) varieties was studied. In the non-salined control plants, the antioxidant enzymes activities were significantly higher for maize than for wheat. Adding salt to the nutrient solution increased the level of antioxidants in leaves of both maize and wheat. The first substantial response to salinity was found for SOD on the 2nd day, whereas changes occurred for APX on the 4th day and for GR on the 4th/5th day of salt treatment. Although SOD activity increased considerably more in wheat (C3), it never reached as high levels as in maize (C4) grown in the same treatment combinations. The total increase in APX activity was similar for wheat and maize, whereas GR activity was higher in leaves of maize. Lipid peroxidation analyses showed an increase in TBARS contents in both plants' species grown under salinity that corresponded to the damage that occurred in secondary oxidative stress. However, as a result of advanced antioxidant defense in maize, the TBARS quantities did not elevate to as high level as in wheat. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements revealed a considerable decrease in the efficiency of PS II and electron-transport chain (ETC). Assimilation rate of CO2 decreased in both plant groups; however, in C4 maize, we observed a much better capacity to preserve the photosynthetic apparatus against overproduction of ROS. Results suggest that efficient antioxidant defense plays an important role in maize, the C4 plant, resistance to environmental stresses like salinity or drought.

Using water culture technique, some experiments have been performed to investigate the effect of 60 days salinization treatments (0.0–100 meq 1−1 NaCl) on dry weight and on the content of some nutrient elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, N) in castor bean, sunflower and flax plants. In general the content of sodium increased progressively with the rise of salinity level. The relatively low and moderate salinization levels (20 and 40 meq I−1 NaCl) resulted in a promotion rather than inhibition of the dry weight and in the content of most of the investigated elements in the different organs of the test plants. However with the rise of salinization level from 60 to 100 meq l−1, the dry weight and the content of these nutrient elements were mostly reduced.

The effects of salicylic acid (SA) and salinity on the activity of apoplastic antioxidant enzymes were studied in the leaves of two wheat (Triticum aestivam L.) cultivars: salt-tolerant (Gerek-79) and salt-sensitive (Bezostaya). The leaves of 10-d-old seedlings grown at nutrient solution with 0 (control), 250 or 500 mM NaCl were sprayed with 0.01 or 0.1 mM SA. Then, the activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined in the fresh leaves obtained from 15-d-old seedlings. The NaCl applications increased CAT and SOD activities in both cultivars, compared to those of untreated control plants. In addition, the NaCl increased POX activity in the salt-tolerant while decreased in the salt-sensitive cultivar. In control plants of the both cultivars, 0.1 mM SA increased CAT activity, while 0.01 mM SA slightly decreased it. SA treatments also stimulated SOD and POX activity in the salt-tolerant cultivar but significantly decreased POX activity and had no effect on SOD activity in the saltsensitive cultivar. Under salinity, the SA treatments significantly inhibited CAT activity, whereas increased POX activity. The increases in POX activity caused by SA were more pronounced in the salt-tolerant than in the salt-sensitive cultivar. SOD activity was increased by 0.01 mM SA in the salt-tolerant while increased by 0.1 mM SA treatment in the salt-sensitive cultivar.

During the germination, wheat and sorghum plants tolerated salinity up to 10 mM NaCl. Seedling growth and dry matter production remained more or less unchanged up to 10 mM NaCl in case of wheat and up to 5 mM NaCl in case of sorghum. The water content of test plant species exhibited nearly constant values irrespective of the salinity level applied. The proline and carbohydrate content increased with elevating NaCl, while free amino acids content decreased. Irrigating of seedlings with tryptophan had non significant effect at all salinity levels used.

The differential responses of the wheat cultivars Shi4185 and Yumai47 to salinity were studied. The higher sensitivity of Yumai47 to salinity was linked to a greater growth reduction under salt stress, compared to more salt-tolerant Shi4185. Salinity increased the Na+, proline and superoxide anion radical (O2 ?) contents in both cultivars. Leaf Na+ content increased less in the more salt-tolerant cultivar Shi4185 than salt-sensitive Yumai47. The proline content increased more significantly in Shi4185 than Yumai47; on the contrary, superoxide anion radical content increased less in Shi4185 than Yumai47. This data indicated that wheat salinity tolerance can be increased by controlling Na+ transport from the root to shoot, associated with higher osmotic adjustment capability and antioxidant activity. Although salinity increased aldehyde oxidase (AO) activity and abscisic acid (ABA) content in the leaves and roots of both cultivars following the addition of NaCl to the growth medium, AO and ABA increased more in the salt-sensitive cultivar Yumai47 than the more salt-tolerant cultivar Shi4185. Xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) activity in the leaves of both cultivars increased with increasing concentrations of NaCl; however, leaf XDH activity increased more significantly in Yumai47 than Shi4185. Root XDH activity in Shi4185 decreased with increasing NaCl concentrations, whereas salinity induced an increased root XDH activity in Yumai47. The involvement of AO and XDH enzymatic activities and altered ABA content in the response mechanisms of wheat to salinity are discussed herein.

The salinity tolerance of two commercial rootstocks used for loquat plants (Eribotrya japonica Lindl.), loquat and anger, was studied in a pot experiment. The plants were irrigated using solutions containing 5 and 50mM NaCl and 5 and 25mM calcium acetate for 4 months. The growth, tissue mineral content, water status, and leaf gas exchange responses to salt treatment with and without additional calcium were examined. Plant growth was not modified by salinity in anger (50mM), but was reduced in loquat; leaf biomass and stem diameter were particularly affected. However, Cl(-) levels leaf increased with salinity to a greater extent in anger, while the Na(+) content increased to the same extent in both species, indicating that ion transport from root to leaves was not inhibited in either species. Additional calcium (25mM) reduced Na(+) and Cl(-) concentrations in both species, but did not minimise the effects of salinity on the growth of salt-treated loquat plants. The decrease in K(+) concentrations had no effect on growth, as anger was the most tolerant rootstock and had lowest leaf K(+) content. Salinity reduced the Ca(2+) concentration in the roots of both species. However, when calcium was added, the concentration of Ca(2+) increased in the roots of salinised plants. Leaf water potential at pre-dawn decreased significantly in both species under saline conditions. Leaf gas exchange, stomatal conductance and, in particular, net CO(2) assimilation, decreased with salinity only in loquat, indicating that photosynthesis could be the growth-limiting factor in this species.

When cultivated in culture solutions salinized with different concentrations (0 to 100 meq I-1), of either NaCl or Na2SO4, the oil producing castor bean, flax and sunflower plants exhibited significant changes in their water relationship parameters (stomatal frequency, rate of transpiration and water content). Although the trend of these changes was nearly the same, their magnitudes depended on the plant treated as well as on the type and level of the salinizing agent. In this respect the values of the stomatal frequency and the rates of transpiration increased significantly with the rise of salinization up to the level 40 meq I-1. Above this the values of these parameters were generally reduced with the rise of salinization up to the highest level used. In addition a considerable number of stomata in either the lower or upper epidermis was found to be closed at the levels ranging from 60–100 meq l-1. The water content of leaves of either castor bean or sunflower subjected to low or moderate salinization levels, remained more or less constant, but with a general tendency to decrease at high levels. However, in the case of flax the leaf water content was generally elevated at nearly all salinization levels.

The molybdenum cofactor (MoCo) is a component of aldehyde oxidase (AO EC 1.2.3.1), xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH EC 1.2.1.37) and nitrate reductase (NR, EC 1.6.6.1). The activity of AO, which catalyses the last step of the synthesis of abscisic acid (ABA), was studied in leaves and roots of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) plants grown on nitrate or ammonia with or without salinity. The activity of AO in roots was enhanced in plants grown with ammonium while nitrate-grown plants exhibited only traces. Root AO in barley was enhanced by salinity in the presence of nitrate or ammonia in the nutrient medium while leaf AO was not significantly affected by the nitrogen source or salinity of the medium.Salinity and ammonium decreased NR activity in roots while increasing the overall MoCo content of the tissue. The highest level of AO in barley roots was observed in plants grown with ammonium and NaCl, treatments that had only a marginal effect on leaf AO. ABA concentration in leaves of plants increased with salinity and ammonium. Keywords: ABA, aldehyde oxidase, ammonium, nitrate, salinity.

Salinity and the Hydraulic Conductance of Roots
The effect of salinity on hydraulic conductance of intact roots of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) was determined in split-root experiments using salinized nutrient solutions. Experiments were conducted in controlled climate chambers under two or three relative humidity levels and four solution osmotic potential levels. The relationship between water flux through roots (Jv) and total water potential difference between the leaves and the root medium (Δψ) was linear, usually with a small intercept. Thus, the root hydraulic conductance (L) was not affected by salinity within the range of fluxes obtained in these experiments, with L= 0.036 mm h?1 bar?1 for tomato and L= 0.0167 mm h?1 bar?1 for sunflower. Our results agreed with theoretical analysis of coupled water and ion uptake. From Cl? and Na+ uptake data, the reflection coefficient (o) for tomato roots was calculated as 0.956, which was compatible with the near-zero intercept. A large intercept for sunflower could not be readily explained. Relative humidity strongly affected root growth, with more rapid growth under low humidity conditions. Transpiration of sunflower plants was reduced by 20% when the relative humidity was increased from 34% to 84%, whereas transpiration in tomato was reduced 50%.

Summary The effects of P nutrition under various salinity levels on the protein, amino acids, and nutrients in mature wheat grain were studied. Mexican dwarf wheat (Triticum aestivum L. var Inia) was grown to maturity in solution cultures with variable concentrations of P (0.5-, 5-, 25- and 50 mg P/l) in combination with NaCl at concentrations producing osmotic potentials (s) of –0.4-, –1.4-, –2.4- and –4.4-bars. All other essential nutrients were present in adequate concentrations for vigorous plant growth.Increasing levels of P in the nutrient solutions tended to decrease the grain yield, N, Cl, protein-glutamic acid,-proline,-leucine,-glycine, and-serine, while P, K, Mg, Zn, Mn and Cu in the grain were increased. The sum of all protein amino acids in the grain decreased as the concentration of P increased in the nutrient solution. The effect of P on the individual and sum of amino acids tended to show peak amounts at the 5.0 mg P/l treatment level.Increased levels of salinity significantly reduced grain yield, N, proteinglutamic acid,-proline,-leucine,-glycine,-serine,-aspartic acid,-alanine, and-phenylalanine in the grain. The sum of the protein amino acids (mol/g dry wt.) was decreased in the grain from plants grown at –4.4 bars salinity level, but not in the grain from plants receiving less saline treatments. The concentrations of free amino acids: serine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, alanine, and arginine were lower in the grain produced at the –4.4 bars salinity than at –0.4 bars salinity level. The sum of free amino acids (mol/g dry wt.) in the grain were decreased at the highest salinity level as compared with concentrations found for grain produced at lower salinity levels. There were some interactions found between P and salinity on the protein amino acids and nutrients in the grains. The amounts of essential amino acids expressed in mg/g of protein were not significantly affected by the increasing levels of P and salinity in the nutrient solution and they were found in adequate or greater amounts than those recommended by the World Health Organization and FAO.

The effects of salicylic acid (SA) on growth parameters and enzyme activities were investigated in salt-stressed safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). Twenty-five days after sowing, seedlings were treated with NaCl (0, 100, and 200?mM) and SA (1?mM), and were harvested at 21 days after treatments. Results showed that some growth parameters decreased under salinity, while malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, phenolic compounds, and some enzyme activities increased. SA application increased some growth parameters, MDA and H2O2 content, and enzyme activities except catalase (CAT), which was different from the other enzymes and SA significantly reduced CAT activity in plants. These results suggest that SA-induced tolerance to salinity may be related to regulation of antioxidative responses and H2O2 level. Our study suggested that the resistant safflower can direct reactive oxygen species from a threat to an opportunity by using SA. Therefore, exogenous application of SA played this role through regulation of the antioxidant system.

Abstract.  1. Salinity is an important cause of abiotic stress in wetland communities yet little is known about its consequences for freshwater plants and their insect herbivores. The goal of this study was to test the effect of salinity on a leafmining insect, Cerodontha iridiphora , and its herbaceous host plant, Iris hexagona .
2. Leafminer performance was evaluated on irises grown in control and saline treatments, and the effects of salinity and herbivory on leaf quality and mortality was measured.
3. Leafminer density and size were significantly lower on irises grown in saline water compared with freshwater.
4. Both salinity and herbivory accelerated leaf senescence and mortality, and their combined effects increased tissue loss by an order of magnitude compared with controls.
5. Leafminers acted as nutrient sinks. The undamaged regions of mined leaves contained 40% less nitrogen than unmined leaves, providing a mechanism for the premature leaf mortality.
6. Salinity was detrimental to the performance and survival of both the iris leafminer and its host plant. We propose that glycophytic host plants and their insect herbivores will suffer more than halophytic communities from environmental salinity because they lack the adaptive mechanisms to tolerate this potent physiological stress.

The aim of the study was to examine the effect of silicon on spring wheat subjected to salt stress. The experiment was conducted in hydroponic conditions on 10-day old wheat seedlings. Salt stress was induced by sodium chloride at the concentration of 70 and 100 mM added to nutrient medium. Silicon (H4SiO4) at the doses of 1.0 and 1.5 mM significantly increased the shoots and roots weight of wheat seedlings and the content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and b, as well as carotenoids) in leaves. It reduced a detrimental effect of salt stress and restricted peroxidation of membrane lipids. We also observed a greater accumulation of nitrates and the decrease in malondialdehyde concentration in plant tissues as a result of silicon addition. Under osmotic stress, silicon did not change the content of sugars in wheat shoots and roots. Silicon did not clearly affect proline content. In general, the obtained results point out that silicon can be used for the alleviation of adverse effect of salinity on plants status.
